Tropicana?

Church 4
Nothing is set in stone yet, but Tropicana is rumored to be looking at the former daycare located next to this church in the 1000 block of H Street.

That would be incredible. They have the BEST Jamaican food anywhere in the area. Another great addition to H.

There already are enough of this kind of place on H. We don't need another $5 carryout joint. I hope the sit-down requirement is applied.

Have you ever eaten there? The food is great. We had a nice sit-down restaurant that went out of business no one ate there (Pfish Tea). I heard the food was bad and service worse. I'd prefer a casual, less expensive place like Tropicana anyday. Maybe they plan to make this a casual sit-down type place. I'd say hold off before passing judgement and condeming it. Tropican is by no means a crappy fast food McDonalds type place.

The Tropicana owner mentioned a possible H st. location at an event a couple months ago. The video is online on the dc.gov web site if anyone has the energy to search for it. In the video someone asked him about why he doesn't open a sit down restaurant and he discussed the cost differences. Assuming his numbers weren't exaggerated. The difference in start up costs for a take out place versus a table service establishment was pretty wide. Overall I think this guy has proven himself over the years to be a responsible DC business owner and don't see any reason why we shouldn't support him wholeheartedly. The sit down places will come eventually but everything comes one step at a time.

We already have a Jamaican style sit down/take restaurant on 6th and H St. There food is just as good if not better than Tropicana.

I can't think of the name of it, but it's right under the Start Farm.

I live immediately behind the proposed Tropicana restaurant on H Street. To date, they have maintained the ally immediately adjacent to and behind the building in a deplorable state. I am constantly picking up their construction debris and trash - which is providing shelter for rats. They have not even opened shop yet! If this is any indication of things to come I can assure you Tropicana will not add any value to our neighborhood.

I didn't get the impression that Tropicana was in charge of the renovations, just that they are looking at the place. The trash can't be their fault.

They can be the best run business in the world, with delicious food, but how do they control what all their patrons are going to do with their take out trash after their done eating on the corner of 11th and H or 12th and H?

We'll just end up picking up Tropicana napkins next to the Cluck U trash...fun fun.

I'm all for more places to eat though. Someone please have the cojones to open a sit down place though...please!

I thought we weren't supposed to be having anymore carryouts on H street

a lot of folks just want to see some development. whatever it is.

it's 'gotta be better than what it is like now, dude!'

unfortunately, many in dc gov't feel the same way.

they just accomodate interim solutions, with the hope that it'll work out in the long term.

it's just people that show up to a state that isn't really a state and have some political power.

it's a joke.

they'll approve anything that's a little bit better than what we have, so they can take credit for improving the area.

you'll see a lot more take outs, strip clubs, sex clubs, etc. before you see any long term caring for our city.

that's dc.

I hope the negative comments is not because the place is BLACK OWNED? Here we go with the race this thing again. Don't we get that enough about H Street. Shit come on now. Aren't we grown?

I'm not sure it's a racial thing to object to carry-outs. Tropicana does have some decent Jamaican food, and it will be more than 4 blocks from Taste of Jamaica (but only three blocks from Caribbean Best). We do have some sit-down restaurants in the pipeline. It also sounds like Dr. Granville's will be a decent dinner option, which is good since your sit-down dinner option right now is basically the Argonaut (unless you did the short menu at the Red & the Black).

no one is thinking racist, except for you.

it's about the access to quality food and places to eat.

don't be one of those people that start to turn things into race/sexuality issues.

think NICE DINNER!
