I don't know if these new people on Staples are owners or renters, but I believe that if property owners would really start doing background checks on potential renters and stop renting to trash, MAYBE some of these violence issues in these DC neighborhoods would cease. I can't stand it. It's one thing to have a prevalent police presence, but it's another for landlords to take a more active role in screening out potential tenants, esp. in places in NE DC where lots of people are renters. These NE neighborhoods seem to be going from bad to worse and the little improvements being made seem to be due to police presence. It's not just the job of police to work towards making these areas safe. Property owners need to make a huge step in this process. On another note, DCRA needs to be more involved in eradicating the issues with vacant and abandoned properties in these areas, which invite crime. If troublemakers see decay and abandon, then they will be attracted to this and not care either when they shoot up the place or poison the community with drugs. There has to be more done by property owners. What do you think?

Homeowners in the neighborhood need to get involved also. If there are nusance properties on your block, get a list of them and report them to your PSA. This should include houses where illegal activities are suspected, suspicious and roudy people milling around a particular house and any other activities disturbing the neighborhood.

After these houses have been identified, report them to your PSA officer. In my experience the houses that get the most complaints are closely watched by the officers. Sometimes all it takes is a little scrutiny by the police and neighbors to clear out the touble makers.

You can also lean on the homeowner renting to these troublemakers. Let them know that there properties are about to be declared nusance properties and will be reported to the District government. If these renters are under the Section 8 program, their vouchers can revoked and the the homeowners can be removed from the program.

This takes an ivestment of time and determination by the neighbors.
It also takes numbers. One or two people can't take the neighborhood back.
