ANC 5B10 (SMD) Carver Terrace Mtg

P1010138
Bladensburg Road
For those of you who get your jollies at community meetings, or if you're just looking for something to do before heading to the Freaky Friday the 13th Cheeky Monkey Show, here's a Carver Terrace (SMD 5B10) meeting with discussion of the Arboretum Place (so apparently they still plan to buil it) development. Previous haggling over the development has focused on condo versus apartment and price caps. Rumor has it that the latest rendering looks like a gated community. Also on the agenda is a little place called Jimmy Valentine's that wants to open on Bladensburg, but needs a liquor license. Oh yeah, they'll also be talking about crime.

DATE: APRIL 13, 2007; TIME: 5:30 – 7:00 P.M.; LOCATION: DC DEVELOPING FAMILIES CENTER, 801 17TH STREET, NE (across from Hechinger Mall Safeway)

Guardian Angels March in Carver Terrace

Here's the video from Channel 7 of last night's Guardian Angel/citizen march through the Carver Terrace neighborhood. The Angels recently announced plans to remain in Carver Terrace & to begin a youth program for kids aged 8-15. Participants in the youth program would not patrol their neighborhood, but would participate in neighborhood cleanups & plantings, & would be given the opportunity to study martial arts.

Here's the Channel 5 video on the march and the shooting that specifically spurred this march. The shooting occurred Saturday evening a little before 5:30. A man was working on an apartment he is renovating, and he had his ten year old daughter with him. The man approached a group of youths who had been playing football in the street and were now sitting on, or leaning against his car. He asked them to move. A few minutes later a rock was thrown at the man while he retrieved something from his car. He was then beaten & shot repeatedly. The video says the man was shot at least 6 times. I've heard nine (it appear he has 9 holes from 6 bullets). His daughter witnessed much of the attack. Luckily, he's in stable condition at the hospital. The shooter has not yet been apprehended.

Here's Channel 9 on the shooting.

Community Rocked by Recent Violence Calls for Help

(Washington DC) – A contractor, working to rehabilitate a building located at 1229 18th Street, NE was shot nine times on January 13, 2007, after asking a group of youths to get off of his car. The victim, a law-abiding and peaceful family man is in stable condition following the shooting. The victim’s ten-year old child witnessed the shooting. The community was shaken again, the very next day by a shooting occurring at Yums Carryout, located at 1023 Bladensburg Road, NE. Two quadruple shootings and other shootings have resulted in four homicides within the last four months, shaking the very foundation of the Carver Terrace community.

Commissioner India Henderson and former Commissioner Kathy Henderson will lead a peace march with citizens, Police Chief Cathy Lanier, 5D Commander Jennifer Greene and the Guardian Angels to denounce the violence in this community. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, Mayor Adrian Fenty, U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Taylor, Ward 5 Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr. and all At-Large Councilmembers and clergy are invited to participate in the peace march. Fourteen Carver Terrace youth were recruited for neighborhood patrols as a direct result of the first Carver Terrace/Guardian Angels community march on January 10, 2007.

Underscoring the peace march is a demand for the immediate installation of a surveillance camera for the 18th and M Streets area and heightened police patrols to restore law and order in the this community. The march will begin at the corner of 17th and M Streets, NE, at 7:00 p.m.; on January 17, 2007. An emergency community meeting will convene at the DC Developing Families Center, located at 801 17th Street, NE, prior to the march at 5:30 p.m.

“We are tired of the violence in our neighborhoods and we want the police to step up and do a better job of protecting this community, stated longtime resident S. Harris”.

Northeast Community Finds New Allies in Fight Against Crime

(Washington DC) –Citizens in the Carver Terrace community, located in Ward 5 are waging an intense battle to permanently reclaim their neighborhood from criminals and senseless violence. A barrage of bullets disrupted neighborhood tranquility on January 7, 2007, leaving one victim shot and neighbors pensive but determined to reclaim the peace. This area also recently endured two quadruple shootings and three homicides.

Neighbors are worried about the recent resurgence of violence, yet are determined to restore peace and tranquility to this community. Commissioner India Henderson and former Commissioner Kathy Henderson have organized a community walk with citizens, police officials and the Guardian Angels to demonstrate solidarity against violence and crime. Newly elected Mayor Adrian Fenty and Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr. are invited to lock arms with citizens in the walk for peace.

The Guardian Angels have worked with communities throughout the United States and abroad to help citizens take back their neighborhoods from criminals. The community walk will convene on January 10, 2007, at 6:30 p.m. at the corner of 19th Street and Maryland Avenue, NE.

“Every community has the right to be safe and we want to help citizens report crime and protect their homes” says John Ayala, spokesperson for the DC Chapter of the Guardian Angels. Citizens in the Carver Terrace community eagerly embraced their newest allies by voting unanimously at a recent community meeting to work with the Guardian Angels.
