Here is a statement from Tommy Wells' office-
You’ve probably heard about all the different H Street, NE related funding opportunities from a variety of sources, but we’ve put up a page on our website with much of this information consolidated into one place. The total is over $76 million being invested on H Street, NE.

Two big items:
1) Please join Councilmember Wells and Mayor Fenty tomorrow morning at 10:30 am at the Starburst intersection for the announcement and groundbreaking of the streetscape and street car projects.
2) Please note the deadlines for applications for several of the programs listed on this webpage, and also note that the funding awards are “rolling”. Organizations or property owners that want to apply should move quickly because the funding agency isn’t waiting until the deadline to make the awards; they are giving awards to eligible applicants along the way. If a very worthy applicant waits until the deadline to apply, the funding may well have run out. So if you know of folks interested, please encourage them to move quickly.

PDF link doesn't work.
Sorry. It looks like Blogger ate most of my post.
If I'm reading this correctly, the program is making up to $25 million available for individuals who plan to use it to rehabilitate (or build) retail and/or mixed use space along the H Street Corridor. Is this right?
If so, does that also apply to potential projects like the one slated for the north side of the 300 block? And, if so, is this something that could be used as a further enticement for a grocery retailer like Trader Joe's?
In any event, the combination of this announcement with the start of the streetscape renovations makes it sound like real progress all around!
Mike,
You're correct. The way the TIF funds are outlined, it specifically is to be used for "anchor" retail developments, which include a grocery store.

go to the trader joe's web site thru the link above to request that trader joe's relocate onto h; be sure to note the $25 million incentive!
wow! thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention, inked!
folks, if we want a trader joe's on capitol hill, we can't rely on ANWAR to make it happen.
what has he done? NOTHING.
he's following englert's idea of creating 'clubs' to eventually attract basic commodities to the neighborhood.
as such, he cares more about opening clubs in the buildings he owns on H street now, and then later taking credit
for attracting anchor places like grocery shopping, or pharmacies, whatever.
his focus is on opening his own crap, and not attracting a local market. if it was, he would have bought a mailing
list of our area, and sent out a letter to persuade people to contact trader joe's and request that they open here.
he didn't. why? he's busy utilizing his "main street status" to open up his own joints on h street, with the idea that
he's following englert's theory that clubs are the start of other more solid businesses. he's abusing the MAIN STREET
idea to try and get immediate profits for himself, while neglecting what he really should be doing in his capacity,
i.e. SERVE THE GREATER GOOD OF H STREET.
he's incompetent and egotistical.
i'm serious, folks. look it up on plenty of blogs...
if we want a trader joe's in the hood, we should do it ourselves, and make it happen!
we cannot rely on this ANWAR character.
we can't rely on 'elected officials either'. their hands are tied, as they can only represent their little neighborhoods, etc.
we have to do this as a community.
anyone want to volunteer to actually do something?
the thing is that it costs $$. yes, the $$ that ANWAR is spending for his own purposes, not H STREET.
a few hundred bucks for a mailing list, print a letter, send it out, get results....
but don't leave these brilliant ideas to ANWAR. he doesn't give a hoot.
you want a store? let's go and get it!
i'm tired of relying on ineffectual "officials" to do anything other than ... get elected.
post your ideas!
PooPoo,
Once again your rants prove that you are insane. Stay on your couch and be a critic. Let us do the real work. You don't know Anwar and you have never dealt with Anwar. Because if you did you would have to be out there in the community contributing to its betterment. We all know that you are not. You should have your own blog.....but who would read it?
ok, fupoopoo.
i'm holding you to your 'sane' word.
check back in a year and let us know about your progress, or lack thereof.
i'm looking out for "fupoopoo and ANWAR progress", and i don't mean dives on top of popeye's chicken.
you've given yourself the opportunity of proving you're worth your word, so go out and do something.
you have my wholeheared support. if i can help, let me know. unless of course, you have 'everything under control'.
let us know about your progress!
It is striking how off-balance the discourse can get in an online forum like this. When one makes bold accusations against a known member of the community, it would be nice to know who is making the accusations. Perhaps the claims hold some truth, but when the poster offers nothing more than an excretory nickname, it comes off as nothing more than an anonymous rant.
A question for you, poo: When you meet people around the neighborhood, do you admit to your online persona? Just curious.
Ken Petersen from G Street
yes, kenny.
there are several folks that know who i am, where i live, what i eat, how i vote, etc.
and yes, they contribute to this blog.
not sure what your point is...
PooPoo,
Please contact me. I have some projects on H st that may interest you.

Poo Poo,
Exactly what clubs do you see opening in buildings owned by Anwar? Because I can't think of any that are currently open in places he owns, or that are slated to open in buildings he owns. If you're going to personally criticize someone you might want to back it up with some facts.
I'm not a big Anwar supporter either and I'm not sure that owning a couple of properties on H St and running the H St. Main St. Program isn't a conflict of interest. However, I'm not aware of his opening up new bars on H St. If this is true, I'd like to know more about it.
Anyone have any word on today's big press conference?
I went down there but the mayor was late and I had to return to my house for a meeting. There's a nice crowd there, a podium, and a pile of sand for them to ceremonially break ground in.
Mayor is late for a groundbreaking for a project that is two years late...
I'd call that irony.
He everyone I’m new to H Street trying to get to know everyone! I just recently purchased a multi unit on 1100 block and dumped a ton of money into renovating it I also live there. Would def like to get involved in any community effort to attract a grocery anchor Murrys just doest have the produce selection that im accustom too. –David
PS can some one fill me in who ANWAR is and his roll? Thanks
dmaz,
you should have seen Murry's 6 years ago when they were all about the green bananas and rotting mangoes. Anwar is Anwar Saleem from H Street Main Street. Despite Poo Poo's comments, Anwar actually is involved in doing some good around here. And yes, another grocery store would be nice.
from my math, the streetscaping project is only ~4 months behind schedule, not the 2 years offered above...unless, of course, I am ill-informed. It was my understanding the project was to begin in Oct '07.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Groundbreaking showing up on ABC7 news:
http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/0108/492461.html
I think the project was orignally scheduled to begin in spring of 2006. They just kept putting it off.
A group continues efforts to make a community food co-op happen on H Street. If you're interested, the group has a website.
