Hillman, from earlier comments (#73)left under "Recent Developments", do you know Mr. Gibson is having metal detectors installed at XII? If so, this paints a very different picture than the type of lounge Mr. "Cluck-U is not a fast-food restaurant" Gibson portrayed in his post. I'm skeptical of him and this new establishment. Maybe I will be proven wrong.
No Soul Searcher, metal detectors (if true) are not the issue. It's the idea of having a club in our neighborhood that would be attracting people that NEED to go through any metal detectors.
You can't be serious about wanting these types of people coming into your neighborhood!
Also Soul Searcher, you said in your post under "Recent Developments" that Nations also uses a metal detector. Do you want a club like Nations (and the patrons it attracts)in your neighborhood? I don't.
I have know idea if this metal detector thing is even true. Maybe Mr. Gibson will chime back in and clear it up. If it is, I think he's going for a different type of lounge than what he described earlier.
The metal detector comment came from Hillman on an earlier post ("Recent Developments"), that is why I asked him and Birkie if they had any evidence of that or if Mr. Gibson can put an end to this rumor one way or the other. I agree it is damaging to him if it is not true, I think its damaging to the neighborhood if it is.
As for Cluck-U and whether its still open or not, bill ray of g st. (at 11:03) said it was closed, but you might want ask if he has evidence or if its hearsay - he just said to "get over it".
Posting as anonymous is the equivalent of showing up to a dinner party with a ski mask on, then proceeding to join the conversation at hand and assuring everyone the mask is there so you feel comfortable. I mean, really, are your comments on the neighborhood *that* top secret?
As for Nation having metal detectors, Nation had a legal capacity of around 2000 patrons, if memory serves. with that many people in a crowd, it would be better to assure that none of them were armed than relying on security to wade through hundreds of people to get to where the knifefight is ensuing. Not that I ever saw a knifefight in any venue (except the footage of the 1971 Stones concert in Altamount, wow, rock and roll sure is dangerous...wonder how hip-hop got all the bad press? lol).
Twelve won't have anywhere near that capacity. Republic Gardens doesn't have metal detectors (or at least they didn't the last time I went), nor does any mid-sized venue in the city that I'm aware of. I generally doubt that there will be metal detectors at Twelve. I'm waiting for actual evidence to be posted thereof.
ps: If you note where someone referenced one of my prior posts, you saw an example of the utility of posting using names...people can track your prior comments and ask follow up questions as new information is presented...it makes for better conversation. Can everyone at least pick a pseudonym? Really, it helps folks get to know who exactly is "talking", about any possible biases OR specialized knowledge. For example, if you see me posting about event promotion, you know I am doing so from a position of experience, not speculation. If I were "anonymous", you'd have no idea what weight to give my opinion. I am also presumptively biased in favor of hip-hop. Ha-ha. I try to be rational about it, though. Heh.
that last message was full of typos and errors. arrrgggh. ah well. typing too quickly, proofreading too little. i think it makes sense as written though. i hope.
No. I have NO information indicating metal detectors. I never meant to imply that I did. If people got that impression, I apologize for my imprecision.
I was just giving 'what if' scenarios for problems we've seen at clubs in the past, and I happened to use the installation of metal detectors as an indication of problems.
I never meant to imply that this particular club had any plans for metal detectors.
I apologize to Mr. Gibson for creating such a wrong impression.
Soul Searcher, we're all annonymous on here. Some to a lesser degree than others. Even Inked is annoymous unless you meet her at a dinner party and she says "I'm Inked and I created Frozen Tropics" and even then someone else could come up and say "I'm Inked and I created Frozen Tropics" and who would know other than the real Inked and his (or her) friends. How do we know you don't post as "Anonymous" sometimes? I think its here to stay and I also think its a big part of why this blog works for so many.
Also, I think Mr. Gibson said the place is 3 levels. That combined with the fact that I looked inside and saw a nice bar area on the level previously occupied by Cluck-U led me to believe that Cluck-U will not be reopened.
I did not notice any metal detectors when I looked inside and still find it amazing how a random comment from a previous post leads to this silly exchange.
Soul searcher made a good point on the utility of using names.
I love this blog and my neighborhood. Too bad some of the "neighbors" are anonymous and annoying.
I had thought (or thought I heard) that Cluck-U was closed simply because construction on XII required that it be closed for a while -- they were building stair access to XII and that meant construction work in part of Cluck U's space. Is that wrong?
Dude, Nation didnt have metal detectors. They did pat downs. Most club patrons have no problem with pat downs for weapons. Its the pat downs for drugs that are intrusive. I've occasionally felt like i was being felt up. Anyways, people need to freaking relax. Clubs are welcome, there is no problem with Rock and roll hotel, nor was there a problem with Sanctuary. We need more club venues on H instead of all the live performance places.
I totally disagree with dcjaded saying "We need more club venues on H instead of all the live performance places." Give me a break. We're about club/bar/tavern-ed out as far as I'm concerned. Bring more flower shops and places like NAPA and Stella Blu.
Way to many problems at clubs in DC these days! Look at the problems with the places in SW waterfront, or even Ust. Add the parking nightmare and the amount of people that will be out late. Clubs bring a mix of people, mostly younger that can't handle there liquor! Add the fact that the original ANC approval was for a restaurant license and the fact that he went back to the ANC to switch his license because he said he would not be able to meet the food requirements is a problem.
Did anyone bother to check out the XII website? J-Timberlake "Sexy Back" as the background?
That's not exactly a gangsta tune. I don't know why everyone is so worried about gun battles in the street before the place even opens.
If Mr. Gibson is a savvy businessman, he'll capitalize on the influx of cash in the corridor and attract an upscale clientele. If he fights against these changes, he'll surely make life (and business) miserable for himself.
I've also got to think new business owners are paying attention to the climate on the street based on blogs like this.
And what about the parking situation on 12 th st near H? At present its atrocious. Not place to park after 10PM. The addition of a high capacity club in the area should not be allowed without adequate parking.
I cant help but chuckle a bit. the neighbors try to shut down cluck u because it's not the kind of establishment they want, so Bernard Gibson turns around and opens a 3 level nightclub? Be careful what you wish for, huh. H street is a long corridor. There's room for everybody, lets hope.
I'm glad people are talking about this. I find it hard to trust a man that tried to convice me that a Cluck-U-Chicken franchise is not a fast food establishment. Whose to say he's not selling his smooth R&B lounge as another "not a fast food restaurant" hoax? I think Mr. Gibson brought all this scrutiny on himself.
I have seen guidos in DC. They were asking me were Club Fur was when I was walking to the NY ave metro. It breaks my heart to say it but they were not driving an Iroc. Maybe DC needs more guidos. Can we import some from Brooklyn, in some sort of guido exchange program?
Does the club extend into the entire second floor of that building, or just the space directly above the former cluck-u space? Are there any constraints on its operation (hours, noise level, etc) that have been placed upon it by ABC?
to my memory, nation security did, at certain events, have handheld wands that they waved over patrons' persons that could detect metal. no, they did not have airport issue walkthrough metal detectors, but everyone i know refers to handheld wands as metal detectors as well as the bulky airport security styled metal detectors. so, unless you're saying i hallucinated the times that someone using the handheld metal detecting wands on me at nation, they did have metal detectors. although, it is entirely possible that i imagined the whole thing. shrug.
Hello All, Thanks for all your feedback and comments. First of all,I never tried to snowball the community. I grew up on 11th st. and according to DCRA's definition, I fell under the category of a restaurant. I really hate to beat a dead horse but, take the time to do your research. Cluck U was shut down as a business decision, not because we were doing poorly. No, we will not have metal detectors. There is no need for that. This is a restaurant & lounge and we hope that as adults we can sit back and enjoy ourselves. We are looking to attract a working class clientele. All I can say is come and see for yourself. I took time out to address these concerns because it was brought to my attention that the community had some issues about XII. I'm just curious where you were when we met with the ANC on numerous occasions. They would not have entered into an agreement if they thought that XII would not be a fit for the community. Therefore, I am sorry if I have not given you any comfort in knowing what XII will bring to the neighborhood. As I said in my first post. H is for hot and we are on fire! I'll see you at the grand opening. Bernard.
Bernard, Originally there was a plan to have outdoor seating along the 12the St. sidewalk. As a 12th St. resident on that block, I would love to see that, as right now that is probably the ugliest stretch of sidewalk around, and is usually occupied by drunks and cardboard boxes. Is that still the plan?
Benard said "H is for hot and we are on fire!" Yup.......that is a really bad slogan for H ST NE considering that it was burned down during the riots in the 60's.
Bernard - Despite DCRA's definition of a "restaurant" you knew all along that Cluck-U was fast food (and I was at those ANC meetings where you were defending your establishment as merely a "restuarant"). I'm not really buying that one. I hope you understand some of the sceptism the community has about your choice to bring another fried chicken place to H St. However, saying that, I am glad you made the "business decision" to shut the doors of Cluck-U and if your new space is all you say it will be, I'm willing to put the whole Cluck-U thing behind us and wish you the best for XII.
I was a frequent customer of Cluck-U (for those referring to it as a fried chicken joint, they had a pretty good grilled chicken sandwich), but I am looking forward to the opening of XII.
I hope that Sticky Rice and Pap & Petey's join them soon.
Some of the comment are SICK. This is a damn business and Mr. Bernard has a right to have whatever business he wants and run it the way he wants to. It's always but damn race on this blog. Wake up H Street! The street doesn't belong to any one race. I hate to see what yall will be saying if there is a Black President running the usa.
Sorry Mr. Kirkland, but Mr. Bernard (or anyone else for that matter) does NOT have "a right to have whatever business he wants and run it the way he wants to." With that sir, you are very mistaken.
He sure does, if it falls within the guidelines of the city. He has to go through a lot of red tape just to get the doors open(ask just about every owner on H st the crap they have to go through.) He wouldn't put together some BS if he didn't know he was what he was getting into. Playing hip-hop doesn't automatically make his bar a magnet for criminal activity. And if his business fails based off of faulty planning and poor music chocies, bad promotions, etc, then it's his fault, and his cross to bear. With that said I'm sure Mr. Gibson is putting together a reputable establishment. But, you don't have to go there. I think the age of building crime magnets is a thing of the past on this Street. The investment is too high to put together something that will be shut down in a month.
I agree with you totally 8th & L, but the previous poster said, "Mr. Bernard has a right to have whatever business he wants and run it the way he wants to." Actually he doesn't. If Joe E. wanted to have stippers at the R&R Hotel, he'd hopefully be shut down or never gotten a licence. If the owners of Sedimos wanted to have drug-paraphernalia sales, he likely wouldn't have been approved by DCRA, so my point is that a person does not have the right to open up any type of business they want -- thank goodness -- like the poster said. Unfortunately it does seem like there was a time you could open up a funeral home on every corner.
Let me be clear, my last post does NOT insenuate that Bernard is planning any type of illicit business at his new establishment. I was merely pointing out that he, nor anyone else, has the right to "open any business he wants" as stated by the previous post.
I have read everyone's concerns and people have a right to express their opinion especially when it comes their community and their way of life. Clubs/lounges etc pose a threat to any community...you have to really take into consideration the type of venue it is and the type of people it will attract. If you put garbage in, you will get garbage out. Since he is catering to a certain crowd of people, hopefully the patrons will care enough to keep his vision of his establishment free of any harm or threat to the community. H Street needed a face lift and his establishment and others are on a long list of things to come. Show your support and stop shooting things down before it even has the chance....gheesh!

1) do you have a non-internet source on whether there will be metal detectors?
2) would you rather he not have metal detectors and someone get shot?
A random poster mentioned metal detectors and now everyone will have something else to whine about. Pathetic.
Cluck-U is closed, get over it.
Posting as 'anonymous' is also very lame.

Well... I've heard from a very reliable person that has actually seen the interior that it's a really nice space. I'm looking forward to the opening.
birkie
Thanks Birkie. Did it have metal detectors? Maybe you can clear this up for us.
I agree with soul searcher.
For those of you who care about this blog, please be careful with the way you post info. to this blog.
Anon. 10:48, what is your source for your metal detector assertion? Do you have any evidence other than hearsay?
Throwing out unsubstantiated comments like your "metal detector" assertion is how stupid, baseless rumors get started.
That being said, does anyone know what will happen to Cluck-U? Is Cluck-U still open or will it now be part of XII?
i just wanted to be lame too.
The metal detector comment came from Hillman on an earlier post ("Recent Developments"), that is why I asked him and Birkie if they had any evidence of that or if Mr. Gibson can put an end to this rumor one way or the other. Looks like XII is facing an uphill battle from the community already. If this turns out to be the best spot on H St, I for one will be very amused.
I had thought (or thought I heard) that Cluck-U was closed simply because construction on XII required that it be closed for a while -- they were building stair access to XII and that meant construction work in part of Cluck U's space. Is that wrong?
Cluck-U's gone. The sign's gone, and a XII sign is in its place. I wish it luck.

I wish him luck with the new place. The clubs with problems tend to be the really big places. I don't think that he has the room for it.
I am surprised that he is closing down Cluck-U though. I figured that the place was doing alright. It seems odd to kill your revenue stream.
i propose a frozen tropic meetup at XII .. hahaha
Does DC even have "guidos"? Do they drive IROCs?
Irocs were sweet

i'm up for a frozentropics meetup!
that'd be pretty cool.
would we have to wear nametags?
As long as they serve gazelle with JT's Sexy Back, I'm there...

i third the emotion for a meetup
nametags, personalized belt buckles and/or t-shirts with your blogger name as a logo are required. LOL.
i can't wait to see the stream of people with nametags reading anon@ 4:42, 12/23/06, etc.
