I think Napa has listened to the issues that were mentioned in previous posts and are adjusting there menu. I think the menu sounds delicious and I can't argue the prices. Kudos to Napa and see you soon!!! BTW, no affiliation to Napa.

There's no thread for it, so I'm just going to post this here -- Inked, I hope that's OK.

My gf and I stopped in Friday night at the soft opening for XII and had dinner. Our experience was generally positive, but there are definitely some things that need work too (unsurprising, given that it was a soft opening).

The menu was decent: mostly comfort food-ish dishes, nothing too ambitious, which is fine. Better to execute the basics well. Prices were reasonable. We started with fried mushroom caps which were decent -- nothing special about their seasoning, but very lightly breaded and not oily. I had meatloaf and she had a spicy fettuccine alfredo, and both were good. My mashed potatoes had an odd edge to their taste which matched an odd taste I sensed in the water in my water glass. I should note, though, that my gf didn't taste that odd taste in the water at all; she even checked mine and said she didn't taste it. I'd say it was just me except she did taste the funniness to the mashed potatoes. It wasn't unpleasant, it didn't make the potatoes inedible or bad or anything -- it was just odd. $33 for the whole thing.

Service was slow, and sometimes inattentive (my gf's water glass sat empty for a while, even after some visits from the waitress), but very very friendly -- we liked our waitress anyway. I'm sure this will improve with time.

The food presentation was simple but nice, and the decor was pretty nice. However, there's one setting issue which is, IMHO, glaringly bad -- literally. The downstairs restaurant area was very brightly lit; and if the lights are on dimmers, they weren't used. The result was that the downstairs had the ambience of a cafeteria. Seriously, it was way way way too bright for a restaurant. Also, the music was of miscellaneous covers (couldn't tell by who) of R&B/funk/go-go/uptempo blues classics, turned up fairly loud. I happen to love that music (well, the originals anyway) -- it's the vast majority of what I own and listen to. But I thought it was a little uptempo and loud for a restaurant setting. That plus the lights gave the place more of a diner sort of feel, which I don't think is what they're shooting for.

(Oh, and I just remembered -- the menu needs a little tweaking in that it's full of misspellings. Some are glaring.)

After eating, we went and looked upstairs, where Bernard wants to have live music. It's done very nicely and is really pretty, but it's a really big space.

Overall, it was a positive experience. I'm sure we'll be back at some point, but I really wish they'd do something about the lights at least.

Which restaurant is this-- XII? I have not heard about it

I know that Napa reads this blog so I am begging them.

1. Please put out a restaurant sign - people don't know you are there because your building looks like an apartment building.

2. Improve the burger - People judge places by basics and if your basics are far from delicious, people will not be back. The burger was not good the last time I was there.

You have good service and nice owners.

I would agree that a sign would help. It isn't hard to walk by the place. I only tried a couple of tapas and two drinks, but both were good. I think the place has a bright future here. They hope to have a grand opening sometime soon. For now they are still tweaking.

I went to NAPA 1015 last night and had the hanger steak, it was very very good. I like the quiet atmosphere too. I expect to be spending a lot more time there.

As one of the most vocal critics of the previous menu's price points, I am very grateful to the folks at Napa 1015 for being responsive to the issue.

I am looking forward to visiting in the near future - and I agree with Inked that they should have a very bright future as H Street continues to come to life.

Dear Jorge at Napa,
You need a sign for your establishment. My husband and I have had positive experiences at your place and will certainly be back. The black bean soup, seafood gumbo, rosemary chicken were all excellent and we are happy about your new menu and prices. However, please put out a sign. I understand the frustration of anon 2:16 begging you to do so...as each time we drive by I ask "why don't they put a sign up?!?!...you cannot even tell it's a restaurant...much less open for anything at all" I wish you much success but if not for FT I would never know you were there...even though I drive by every week. I'm sure there are neighbors who don't read FT (gasp!) and would like to give you money for great food and wine. :-)

Hi all,

I like Napa and hope they are very successful. Just one question, isn't it odd to have a second grand opening? They already had theirs on Feb 6th co-promoted by DC Magazine. Are they having another? It wasn't too busy and could have been promoted much more - great free food and drinks and very few people showed up. Is that why they're doing it again? or is it because they've changed course a bit? Just curious. I'd go again, grand opening or not.

I was there with a large group of co-workers and we tried a bunch of things off the new menu, all were excellent, everyone said they'd come back. I've been several times and it's been better each time. It's now my girlfriend's favorite DC restaurant! The gnocchi was especially great, and the prices now are right where they should be.

I think it's silly that we need to write this now because of some bogus accusations earlier, but i have no affiliation with NAPA besides liking the food there.

It's always more empty then it should be when i go given how good the food is and how little competition there is in our neighborhood, so I urge people to go out and support NAPA, to help them and encourage more establishments of it's kind. People complain about a lack of sit down places, and we get a great one, we should be there in droves!

Hello everyone,
Thank you again for all your comments. I would like you to know that we are having someone from the neighborhood make a sign for us. As a matter of fact, that sign was supposed to be ready back in the begining of February... We have already paid half up front and are still waiting for that sign!
Yes, we had a private grand opening for friends, family and some loyal clients but, we think that it would be nice to have an open house for our neighboors as well. As for the date, we are still working on that.
Cheers!
Jorge

Jorge, it may be time to make the name of your sign maker public. I remember your telling us before Valentine's that you had paid half and had been waiting for some time back then. You're a nice guy and I hope these sign makers haven't taken you for a ride. Maybe a public announcement would put pressure on them to produce or at the very least prevent some of you H St. neighbors for ever using these people.
