5D CAC Meeting Summary

Stan Harris also provides us with a summary of the May 22nd 5th District Citizen's Advisory Council--

The Fifth District Citizens' Advisory Council held a meeting on Thursday, May 22 at the MPD Fifth District Headquarters. Some of the highlights:

* Overall crime is down 10% in 5D
* Burglaries are up 12%. These are happening primarily during the day with entry through rear windows
* Be sure to call 911 to report all suspicious people and activities

Nick Majett spoke on pursuing violations of "Section 8" Federal Housing Regulations. His main points:

* All Section 8 property owners must obtain a business license from DCRA
* All Section 8 property owners must obtain a certificate of occupancy
* DC Housing Authority must inspect all Section 8 properties

Violations:

* You cannot allow someone else other than the designated tenant to live in a section 8 home. Call Diane Oliver at DCHA to report violations; 202-535-1307
doliver@dchousing.org
* Contact DCRA at http://www.dcra.dc.gov/, DCRA@DC.GOV, or 202/442-4400 for overgrown grass and weeds. Owners will be given 7 days to abate after receiving notice. DCRA will then abate and place lien on property.
* Report all nuisance and vacant properties to DCRA at 202/442-4332, DCRA@DC.GOV.
* Vacant properties are taxed at a higher rate.

If you know of a kid that needs to be in camp, call Fayette Vaughn-Lee at fayett.vaughn-lee@dc.gov, 202/698-0188.

Heads up: Harry Thomas, Jr. will be holding a meeting to discuss legislation for a hot-spot anti-loitering bill; date TBA. You may want to contact his office for more information.
