I just noticed that XII has their menu, and some other photos up on flickr. Check them out.

why are there no asians, latinos, or white people in the photos.

i feel excluded.

it's obvious that they pride themselves on being a black-only place.

i feel left out.

20 bucks to the first person who can spot any steak in the "Steak Entree"

The steak is smothered in onions, there's a little triangle that pops out near the broccoli.

Maybe if you go visit, you can be in the photos.

do i need a fake black id? said... -- your statement is ridiculous. i'm black and i've been to many places on H street where I've been the only black person and/or the only person of color on the night/day of my visit. Also, I'm sure there have been many pictures from different establishments with no photos of black people. if you are interested in trying out XII, just go and don't make assumptions.

Anon. 11:23

I too am black and one thing I have always thought but this blog proves is that white people are really only comfortable with places where they are in the majority. Many black people are also this way but we don't whine about places where we are not in the majority or slam them. We just don't go if that is our preference. NOT the case with many of the posters of FT. They will rant and rant and complain until XII is either gone or somehow changed to a place that THEY like. Prime example..Rock and Roll has never seemed liked a place I would be comfortable. Lots of odd looking white people coming in and out and I don't care for the rock music (I assume that is what they will play from the name of the establishment). However, I have not ever complained or bad mouthed the place. Just have not been and keep my thoughts to myself (until now)...well that's not the white way...they have to complain and say silly things. That's really just how they are. Read any XII posting and u will see the weird and crazy comments. If so many people on this blog did not make such sweeping generalizations about black people I may feel bad about the general stuff I just said about them..since they always do it to black people..I don't feel bad at all. I eat at Sticky Rice, Granville, Argo, Napa, and have been to Pap and Peteys and SOVA..I am always one of MAYBE 1 other black person there and that's fine with me. But XII is the reverse and they are freaking out and blaming it on "Cluck U" I bet some of these people have family members in Ohio who can't vote for Obama because he does not wear a flag pin or they heard he is Muslim....people like them are all cut from the same cloth that was probably one time a white sheet.

This blog promotes racists. With all its trashing of XII and all your support of the white owned restaurants. This blog could cause XII to shut down and most of you would not even care. Bernard should bring a lawsuit against this website if he closes down. Do you not have any shame?

Anon 12:13:

What amazes me about your comments is that you basically sound as if you are against racism but then you turn right around and make a bunch of ridiculous racist comments about white people. Where do you get off saying that generally all white people living around H St. are cut from the same white cloth, i.e., KKK members?

What you fail to comprehend is that by making these ridiculous and incendiary statements you're actually making white supremacists arguments for them. There are plenty of moderate, open minded, intelligent people out there who are going to read your comments (as well as all the other comments on XII and Wash Post making ridiculous allegations of conspiracies and "race analysis" of restaurant reviews) and think "Gee, DC is really full of paranoid, racist black people -- why would I ever want to live there?"

For the record, I am not defending the "fake black id" guy, but what you have to understand is that that guy (and others like him) are just trolling this blog to start arguments -- not contribute. They need to be ignored.

If you looked at all of the comments on XII, you would see that the majority are either supportive or trying to be constructively critical -- not incendiary.

For the record, I've been to XII and offered constructive criticism on this blog in the hopes the owner would read it and consider the changes I suggested. Ask yourself: why would any of us have posted suggestions for improvement/changes if I wanted XII to go under?

Not that it matters, but I am white and I am voting for Obama in the fall along with the other "whiteys" on cap hill.

Oh! I see the steak now. Thank you.

JJ

I'm just curios but why not offer your constructive criticism directly to the owner of XII rather than hope that he would read it on this blog? Not all business owners in the neighborhood read this blog so that doesn't seem to be giving him a fair opportunity to respond.

Anon 13:00 PM

I am from Ohio and will not vote for Obama, not because he is black, has a Muslim name (but is not Muslim) or lack of a flag pin (which he now wears)

Reason I will not vote for him is his running for "change" platform. If he gets into office the only thing left in my pocket will be "change" (pennies, nickels, dimes quarters) and all of my money will be redistributed to people who didn't work hard for it.

Anonymous said...

So I guess the great President Bush was the best choice...not only have I been left with Pennies, but endured a war with no purpose, and money being given to those who have money and even bigger tax breaks...McCain anyone? Think not!

Anonymous said...

Ever notice that the wealthy are taxed the most there for should have a tax break? The person who makes 20k and is basically exempt from paying taxes should get a break. I am lost?

Anonymous said...

So basically you dont make much money and want my money for not doing shit?

This business owner in the neighborhood NOT reading this is already doomed for failure!

"This blog could cause XII to shut down and most of you would not even care. Bernard should bring a lawsuit against this website if he closes down. Do you not have any shame?"

I highly doubt FT is going to make a restaurant fail. LOLOLOLOLOL

But what will probably prevent it from being a fruitful business for Bernard is the lack of market research for his idea.

In regards to a lawsuit you just showed how unintelligent you really are

JJ...read more carefully...

I said..But XII is the reverse and they are freaking out and blaming it on "Cluck U" I bet some of these people have family members in Ohio who can't vote for Obama because he does not wear a flag pin or they heard he is Muslim....people like them are all cut from the same cloth that was probably one time a white sheet.

Now if you are someone who is freaking out about XII because there are A. too many black people. B. Marion Barry ate there C. You THINK becaues the space is so large there may be shootings or D. Bernard owned Cluck U then my post was meant EXACTLY for you. Because those are all BS reasons to post the vicious things I have seen about XII. Now if you are not the silly mindless type I described in my post..don't get your briefs or panties in such a bunch. Regarding the Obama comments I specifically noted that the posters who don't like XII for the silly "The owner opened Cluck-U" reason are probably related to the azz-backward types I see on tv crying because they don't have insurance but may vote for McCain because he wears a flag pin. Again if this is not u...relax.

Of course I know a great deal of white-americans are voting for Obama. Because luckily white people aren't ALL as stupid as the crack pots who are just "scared" of XII because black people go there. But if I read FT comments much longer I will begin to think there is something OFF about more of you than I initially thought.

BLACK MAN RUNNING BUT NOT FROM THE COPS!!!

"But if I read FT comments much longer I will begin to think there is something OFF about more of you than I initially thought."

If your statement was made against blacks, we would have 100 posts calling white people racist and calling the ACLU

African-Americans,

As a white person, please realize that the vast majority of white folks either support XII or are indifferent. It's simply a handful of jackasses who have decided to take out their venom here, which leads to the perception of pervasive racism. To those jackasses, why move to this area? There are cheap houses in Prince William County. Seriously.

Anonymous said...

white way,

I did not like XII for any of the reasons you listed. I didn't like XII because the food wasn't that great and I thought the decor was kinda cold (I thought the place lacked paintings, furniture, other things to warm up the room -- when you eat there it feels like you are eating in a cafeteria -- not a restaurant).

I read your post very carefully. Let me ask you this: if you meant to only address "silly, azz backward" types as you say, why did you have to demean all white people? Why did you have to throw in comments implying that all white people living in this area are KKK members? Why do you refer to me as "you" people? Why do you post under the name "white way"?

Its seems to me that if I referred to black people in the same way you refer to whites there would be a billion posts about how exceedingly hurtful and racist my comments were (and the commenters would be right).

My point is, there is no need for this incendiary language. You could have made your point about "azz backward" types without hurting all the rest of the good people on this blog with insulting, absurd comments such the KKK reference. I would ask you to really think about the impact your words will have before you post them.

Anonymous said...

Anyone who uses references like "azz backwards" is an idiot and never was educated enough to learn how to spell growing up.

Kind of like Studio 400 and its co-owner Dizney...

JJ-
You can protest my comments as you wish. NOT changing my opinion.
It's actually nice to see that you are a bit bent out of shape :-)
There are lots of African-American readers of FT who get irritated whenever we have to read the racially charged comments that have been popping up on this blog more and more often. So if you are irritated now...good :-)

And the name calling like "you are an idiot just" just confirms your irritation :-) even funnier...thanks for that Anon
6:21.

But JJ what I find interesting is that you are so irritated by my post. I specifically noted a "Type" and you jumped on it. WHY? If it's not you? Why are you so quick to protest it? It's really a rhetorical question suggesting my post is probably more about you than you choose to admit. HA! I hope that irritates you even more :-)

Honest constructive critique: After viewing this blog over the past year or two, I have to say that a better job could be done at moderating constructive discussion rather than permitting unneccesary attacks. This blog is so pro-gentrification (admittedly) that it has allowed incendiary, and in MANY objective opinions in the neighborhood that this blog desires to help, openly racist comments (from all sides). I don't believe this has been purposeful on the part of the blog-moderator. I'm just saying that there needs to be more oversight in the postings. Honestly, this kind of discussion has done more to divide this community than to unite it. Does anyone care? The attacks on businesses and individuals DO have a negative and tangible impact on decent, hard-working people who deserve just as much of a chance to live and work in a diverse community as everybody else. For instance, simply choosing to not post "do I need a fake black id" would have avoided this whole very common discourse...and a discourse about a business that's knowingly been under attack by many posters of this blog for a long time. It's title alone invites inflamatory responses. What's the purpose of allowing its inciteful post, especially if it is one of those typical postings meant to further divide an already struggling community? I know you want to help, and after a couple of years, perhaps more, of hosting this blog, now might be a time to consider its mission and policies to proactively help to build a stronger community -- black, white, latino, asian, young, old, government assistance, working to make ends meet, to more discretionary time and income than most and been here for decades and bought my house for $75K to just moved in and bought the house next door for $600k. Just a thought one might consider in the future of the H Street community. Peace and love to you all no matter your socioeconomic background. We can all do a better job in showing simple kindness and consideration to each other as fellow human beings who all have in common: just trying to make something of our lives and for our families.

Geez may be Bernard is better off if FT does not post anything about his business on FT. May be it just seems swayed but a lot of readers seem to say such mean things on the 12 string. If you search XII Restaurant on google all the awful comments come right up. It's so bad...

Anonymous said...

I second Anon. 8:28. Thank you Anon. 8:28 on behalf of all of us, black, white, asian, latino, who used to read this blog to learn of the positive developments in our community. There was a time when we all could be proud. It is very unfortunate that the proponents of division have found a niche in this blog.

Due to the disturbing trend in comments over the past several months, I will not be visting this blog as frequently as I have for the past two years.

I wish the best for all businesses in and around H St. NE, and hope we continue to have, and draw in, diverse and varied offerings from which we can choose. I wish the best for the District and all of its residents.

Peace and Love.

White way,
I'm white but I definitely feel the racist undertones of a lot of the commenters. I wouldn't quite go as far as your comment did, but it's pretty much spot on.
The commenters tell themselves that the fact that 400 and XII are frequented mostly by black people has nothing to do with their objections but please, the same anonymous comments are also filled with all the stereotypes they brought into the city when they moved here. That's why this blog needs to force people to have an online ID so we can see which anonymous is which.
The comment about Obama redistributing wealth is hilarious. Cheney and Bush have squandered over a Trillion dollars in our national wealth on their "War to Nowhere" but Republican types still have that Welfare Queen Reagan ad going through their heads...undeserving black people getting the dollars I worked soooo hard for. Hate & selfishness.

Anonymous said...

XII has some service problems, that much is undeniable. But the vitriol is absurd. XII is the only sit down restaurant on H with typical American fare and a downtown-esque club. I like having it as an option. Hopefully the service issues will iron themselves out soon.

Anonymous said...

Geez -- with all of this talk of race, FT appears to have decended to CraigsList Rants and Rave like-status.

The trolls score yet again...

Dear peace & love,
Does covering your eyes, ears and mouth change anything? Sounds like you not want to cover your eyes, but everyone else's too.Why not start your own vanilla blog?

I personally don't care about XII one way or another, but Studio 400 is a ticking time bomb - and I have yet to have talked to a single neighbor from any background or political persuasion who thinks otherwise...the combination of allowing BYOB, kids under 21, and yes, the adult clientele is a bad mix. I hope this place sinks and goes away before something bad happens.

For what it's worth, I'll add that I second the comments of an earlier poster who is opposed to Obama and redistributionist tax policy. I didn't vote for Bush either time, but I'm sure not going to vote for a guy that wants to jack up taxes on my income and investments - I don't even care if he wanted to use that money to provide tickets to Disney for every child in America, I (and everyone else) deserves to keep as much of what they earn as possible.

Once again I'll remind people to think [like an actual rational adult] before posting stuff. While it's clear that some of you guys post simply to inflame, that isn't what Frozen Tropics if really about. It's meant to be an informational site where people can discuss neighborhood affairs. I don't currently have the ability to moderate comments [Blogger malfunction that's been going on for more than a month]. I would rather not force people to either use open ID, or register for Google accounts. Frankly, I'm not sure how effective either would be. But essentially, I hope all posters will adhere to a few simple rules-
1. don't feel the trolls
2. think before you post
3. if you insist on being a dick, either do it elsewhere, or seek professional help.
This blog is meant to be a constructive space. That can include constructive criticism and feedback, but some of the stuff folks are posting is clearly inappropriate. I'm not asking for censorship, just a modicum of basic decency. Most people who read, and most people who post [the vast majority of readers never post] are positive, want to learn about what's happening in the neighborhood, and want to build a sense of community with their neighbors. It really isn't fair or right when a few bad actors spoil things for everyone else. If you are a repeat offender, and you guys know who you are, please stop to consider why you feel the need to act in such an immature and socially inappropriate manner. Your irresponsible comments here do have an impact in the real world...and it isn't a positive one. We're all adults, let's act like it.

And to the commenter who said this blog was admittedly pro-gentrification, I don't think so. You will find some references online that say this blog focuses on gentrification, and that is a fact. Though some of the links have dropped off as materials are removed from the web, you can find a number of links to articles and projects concerned with gentrification, both pro, and anti. I consider this blog to be pro-community, and pro-business [to the extent that they are well run].

The only negative comment I've ever offered about XII was that the open sign nowstairs seems out of place. I had a conversation with Mr. Gibson, and he convinced me that the sign was reasonable to have up while he is trying to attract patrons to a new business. I have no beef with XII, just as I have no beef with the majority of the businesses on H. I've met people who dislike the Rock and Roll Hotel, or the Argonaut, or the Pug, or Naby's, or Caribbean Best, or Dr. Granville's, or countless other places on H, but most of them seem to be able to either refrain from visiting these places, or express their feelings without all of the vitriol that seems to come out surrounding XII. I don't get it. And yes, the most direct way of conveying concerns about an unsatisfying visit is to simply talk to the owner. People post feed back about places online all the time, and there is nothing wrong with posting it here. That said, I consider H Street and its surroundings to be a community where we all want businesses to succeed, so let's keep that in mind an offer constructive criticism, rather than just rants.

Even when I can receive posts and delete them [post posting] I do so very conservatively. I try to rely on either the maturity of the commenter [not full proof], or the larger community to respond. I abhor censorship at its basest, and so I won't delete a comment simply because I find it repugnant. It must either be defamatory, targeting an individual in an inappropriate way [these comments are mostly defamatory], extremely offensive to a group without reason, or sense to the comment, or otherwise obscene, or otherwise worthy [used very conservatively] of deletion.

Also, I do realize that some of these comments are tongue in cheek, but please take care when posting such comments, as some people are clearly missing the joke.
