Chef Shawn Lightfoot's Bio
Picture StarChefs

Liquid Lounge and Restaurant’s Executive Chef, Shawn Lightfoot entered the culinary business in 1982 under the tutelage of Executive Chef Gary Black, then at Washington, DC’s Hogates Seafood Restaurant. Shawn brings over twenty years of culinary experience to the kitchen and hospitality world. He began as a cook at the Rib-It Restaurant in Cherry Hill NJ. After a year he was named Asst. Banquet Chef at Hogates Seafood Restaurant. Shortly there after, he was offered a job as Sous Chef for the Savoy Suites Hotel. After spending the next few years there, he studied with Chef A. Renato of the famed Georgetown Club Washington, D.C., The Baltimore International Culinary Institute of Culinary Arts, and he also studied at the famed Culinary Institute of America, in Hyde Park, New York. At the CIA, Shawn saw and tasted many different cuisines from around the world. He uses techniques from around the world, always with a mind to bend them to his own purposes. As he continued his education, he developed and refined his style as a chef. The more he learned, the more he realized that virtually his entire culinary repertoire was possible even under the strict standards of our field. So he decided to bring people a taste, he decided to redraw the fence line.
After a few years honing his skills in Washington, DC, Shawn began to plan his offering to the community. With help from Owner LaZerrick Howard, he will build Liquid’s reputation, a showcase of cuisine and cocktails. The restaurant is simple and elegant, refined and relaxed. You can wear jeans or a suit; you can drink beer or champagne. Truly, it is all about the food and drink. The menu is focused on freshness and flavor. This is the food your mother would make if she were a classically trained chef. The cuisine is grounded yet manages to be interesting enough to demand multiple visits. Chef Lightfoot suggests wine or beer with each course and almost every glass is offered in small tasting sizes as well as full glasses.
Visiting this restaurant is like coming over to ones’ house for dinner. Family and friends are everywhere, welcoming you at the door, cooking your food, serving your drinks. Shawn wants to visit as many tables as he can each evening, mostly to talk about your evening’s experience. This is his dream come true, his passion and his life. The fences have been rebuilt, and this grass is definitely greener...Bon Appetite!

I am hopeful the "bistro" planned for 400 H Street is a restaurant with true entrees rather than a lounge with bottle service that offers small plates/heavy appetizers.

Anonymous said...

Wow, this place looks amazing! Can't wait for it to open, it will be a fantastic addition to H Street. Quite an impressive menu at very fair prices...

Anonymous said...

Why "Liquid Lounge" instead of "Liquid - the Restaurant"?

Anonymous said...

Liquid Lounge flows better

Anonymous said...

Umm, when is this place supposed to open?

inked said...

jj,
this is still in the early stages. They are still planning and fundraising.

Anonymous said...

I have also seen it as "Liquid Lounge and Restaurant"

If they are still in the early stages of planning and fund raising, how can they post prices? The menu looks good. I hope they get to open

Here's a question: does the shuttle/taxi service for the Atlas District still operate? I don't know because I live nearby and wouldn't use it.
If not, what's the cost of that, or hiring a shuttle or minivan taxi that could charge a flat rate and run up and down H? It seems to me that Joe Englert's vision of a "destination" has been or will soon be realized and the destination needs a dedicated and safe mode of transport to and from the metro.
Am I wrong? Are people finding their way to H St just fine?

Off topic: I had a paninO ;-) at SOVA on Fri. and it was tasty. The grilled eggplant one.

I would drop the "Lounge" and just call it "Liquid: The Restaurant" or something like that. Then people (like me) will be much less suspicious of having another lounge like XII in the 'hood. I'm afraid I can't support anything else on H St. that has the word "Lounge" in its title. In fact, I may officially be kick-starting my opposition to this "Lounge" right now. Please change your name or many of us will begin to campaign against this next albatross on H St.

Anonymous said...

Anon 2:23,

Really? You are a complete and utter joker. Your level of sel-importance is astounding. If "many of us" apparently follow your lead, then tell us your name. But since you are just spurting off nonsense, I am sure no one will actually follow your lead. But thanks for posting, and I hope one day you are as important as you anonymously think you.

I like lounges, go to lounges, and hope that the proprietor of this establishment will feel free to call the business whatever they want to. Despite the recent socialization of the national banking system, this is still a capitalistic country. If the owner picks a bad business model for the location, it will fail. If they pick a good one, it will (hopefully) succeed. So as long as they feel that they can get by without Anon 2:23's business, they can call it a lounge.

Anonymous said...

Not to be too critical, but I think posting this menu/business description is a little "cart before the horse" since we have no idea when, or if, this place will ever open.

I would love for another lounge/restaurant to open on H St., but it seems to me we run the risk of forming false expectations when we start speculating about a place before its open or even has a definite time table to opening.

Driving down H St. last night I couldn't help but get the feeling that H still has a long way to go. Their are still a lot of boarded up places and their is still the Autozone, H St. Connection and the Big Box Storage. These places take up entire blocks and are an absolute eyesore. It also wouldn't hurt if there was better lighting on the street...

Anonymous said...

I agree, cart before the horse. Seems like a lame way to try to generate publicity. We all know it takes forever for a place to open (Granville Moore's? The Pug, anyone?). Good luck in the endeavor but dont bother advertising til it's, you know, going to be a reality.

DCJaded said...

I am still amazed that people hate on H street connection and autozone so much. Sure, other business might be better FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE, but these are successful businesses that have been there for a while. There are plenty of vacant spots. I think we should focus on attacting stores to those locations instead of railing against the existing businesses that dont cause any real problems.

In reality, with credit tightening, I would be surprised if we see much of anything opening 1 year from now.

Anonymous said...

I am hoping Englert will jump in and correct me. My understanding goes like this:

The District limits its distribution of bar/nightclub licenses. To prevent bar/nightclub proprieters from using a restaurant license to operate, they require food account for a certain percentage of revenue (something like 40%). So what winds up happening is bar/nightclub operators marketing themselves as restauarants...which in my opinion largely resembles XII and (based on the "bottle service" and VIP cocktails references in this blog post) might very well be Liquid's.

I do concede it would be great having additional eating options on H Street, but it would be great if food was their primary modus operandi.

Anonymous said...

Having a somewhat detailed menu, including prices, makes sense to me as part of developing a business plan. Hard to walk in and ask for funding if haven't gotten beyond the "well, we'll have some food and maybe some drinks and um, some other food" stage. Will the menu they open with be this exact one? Doubtful. But it gives an idea of what they are thinking.

And I think it's absolutely appropriate to release it in a public forum such as this. The businesses that have done best along H Street are those that told us who they were and what they were going to do months before they came. Anticipation is key to a successful opening. Hopefully Liquid will put a website soon with occasional updates to keep the anticipation building. Looking forward to another great H Street venue.

Very poor business plan to call the establishment a "lounge" when you want to promote a "restaurant". I'm against a "lounge" of any type on H St. Formally change your name if you want my support or want to prevent suspicion from others around H.

He can certainly call his business whatever he wants. I'm just offering a word of caution before he gets off on a really bad start with the community because of one simple word in the title of his business.

Let's start a petition for "No new LOUNGES on H" - you know its coming!

Anonymous said...

Sorry DCJaded,

I forgot that your idea of good neighborhood businesses consist of 7-11s, H St. Connection, auto repair shops/gas stations and plenty of liquor stores. In essence, anywhere with big open lots where people can loiter, throw trash all over the place, and drink and pee to their hearts content.

Basically, you want H St. to look exactly like Bladensburg Rd. Next you'll tell us that Bladensburg looks really great...

Excuse me for wanting to raise the standard of living around here to something a little above that.

DCJaded said...

jj

I am all for raising the standard, but getting rid of existing businesses that dont cause a problem wont "clean up the street". Seriously, there are about 20 vacant lots on H. Lets get businesses there FIRST before trying to close down a successful business. Also, what evidence do you have that closing down there buinesses will stop loitering and trash?

Anonymous said...

JJ:

1) The loitering and trash problems are much more due to residents using the bus stations than them patronizing chicken joints. No matter what else happens on H, you aren't going to alleviate the trash/loitering problems until that portion of our population moves elsewhere.

2) H street connection and the like are MUCH less of an eyesore than vacant buildings, it's ridiculous to even begin to argue otherwise. Populating boarded up buildings on H with new businesses is priority no. 1.

Anon 5:02

3) As for the "Lounge vs. Restaurant" debate, let's call it what it is. When people like you see a black person talking about doing table-service at a "lounge" atmosphere, you are assuming it's going to be some sort of hip-hop, XII-type joint that will bring trouble (although XII, to my knowledge, has brought no such thing). If this were Joe Englert talking about opening a "lounge" you wouldn't give two poops. Look at the menu. Look at the Chef's culinary background. Does that seem like the type of guy that's going to open a troubled spot on H street??

Anonymous said...

Sounds like the place should be called "Vapor".

Anonymous said...

Anon 5:31,

Thank you for highlighting the truth. A lot of these anonymous posters are as bad as the Republicans with their code words. At least the Republicans stand up and say it rather than hiding behind the anonymous tags.

The Joe Englert point is dead on.

Candace said...

Wow, sounds great! I can't wait... they have my H-street resident support.

1) Autozone isn't that profitable, breaks the law, and poses an environmental Hazzard. DC owns the land; when the lease is up in the next two years we should petition for its removal. There's an Autozone right up on Rhode Island Ave., and that space would be PERFECT for a Trader Joes! (parking lot and all)

2) I've noticed in the past few weeks that XII seem to have shut down its upstairs and is only operating out of the small, lower part. It wasn't opened this Saturday at Midnight, which makes no sense unless it is not longer in use. I went up there once on a Friday night and it was pathetically empty, with the VIP section seemingly like a cruel joke. What ever happened to the outdoor seating and the roof deck? Me thinks XII won't be around to see next summer. Any other thoughts on this?

Anonymous said...

No need to reframe my remarks as having some sort of racial undertone. Unless of course that's your agenda. If Joe Englert was talking about opening a "restaurant" that had table service and VIP cocktails as part of its marketed activities, I would be making the same complaint. But that's just it -- Englert's establishments don't have questionable business plans.

Anonymous said...

The leases of the residents of H Street Connection are not being renewed and the whole thing will be razed and something else put in.
Nothing is set, but presumably it will have apartments or offices above with ground floor retail...

Funny, that some people (racists?) jump to the conclusion that I am white because I don't want a place with the word "Lounge" in the title. I'm simply bringing a SUGGESTION to this man's business plan and SUGGESTING that having the world "Lounge" in his business' title MIGHT get him off on the wrong foot with the community! If Joe Englert had called his place the "Argonaut Lounge" he would likely have received greater resistance from the community. That all.

People need to get over themselves thinking that any constructive critisism of a black owned business is based on race. Next they're going to be saying that XII may be failing because of race. Give me a break!

And P.S. Anon. 6:10, please don't EVER compare my comments to a Republican! Thank you.

Speaking of H Street Connection, I was thinking of getting the District to start chasing them for the horrid garbage in their parking lot. Although they are not the _source_ of the garbage, they are responsible for managing the property. Hit Rite Aid between 8:00PM and 10:00PM and you will see what I'm talking about...

DCJaded said...

Untimately, if people are upset about trash then you need to call and complain to the business.

And Seriously people. A trader joes? On H? I dont think we are there just yet. Heck, Why not a tiffany's? I will be happy when/if Harris Teeter gets built next year.

I met Mr. Lightfoot at a community meeting a while back, and he seems to have everything together. I wish him the best of luck. We need development, and I would love to have a passable restaurant/lounge/whatever that's in that location. Sure, I may not ever partake of the bottle service, but I would definitely eat there and have a couple glasses of wine.

Anonymous said...

Mr. Lightfoot doesn't have "everything together" as long as he calls his place a "lounge". A simple change in wording could mean a smooth transition into the neighborhood or an uphill battle. Best of luck to you Mr. Lightfoot. I hope you read this blog and take this advice into consideration. It's a legitimate arguement about simple perception based on title that's all.

Alan Page said...

why does everyone opposed to a lounge post anonymously?

and how does the mere title 'lounge' alone imply that a venue will become problematic? this reaction seems irrational unless it is based on some objective data (like some study finding that lounges are more crime prone than restaurants or something). is it too much to ask people to based their beliefs on something tangible?

Soul Searcher,

Absolutely not, given the usual tone of the trolls on this blog. I'm cringing when I write this, but the same ridiculous talk about how calling a nightspot a "lounge" a problem brings all of the talks about why America isn't ready for a black man to be president to the forefront ("I like black people, but there's something scary about Obama." Please). To all the people "concerned" about the title of a restaurant not even in the construction stages, I urge you to really think about WHY the term "lounge" concerns you, then come to terms with your discriminatory views. Acceptance is the first part of healing, right? It's the only way we can move forward.

Furthermore, can we all agree that we post comments on this blog, we can not pretend that we speak for the entire neighborhood. "Please change your name or many of us will begin to campaign against this next albatross on H St," is a good example. I think an older version of poo poo would call you a loser. I'm inclined to do the same.

8th & L said, "calling a nightspot a "lounge" a problem brings all of the talks about why America isn't ready for a black man to be president to the forefront ("I like black people, but there's something scary about Obama." Please).

Why'd you go bring race and politics into this??
This is weak - Obama isn't planning to open a lounge, if he were some would take issue with the connotation of the word "Lounge" (a place to sit and relax) vs. "Restaurant" (a place to eat). There is a difference here and the only suggestion is that if the owner wants to improve his chances of sucess he might want to reconsider calling his place a "Lounge" - it's as simple as that. Do you think Obama's chances of sucess are better if he associates with Rev. Al Sharpton or Gen. Colin Powell?

Signed,
An Obama supporter

8th and El,

Thanks for speaking the truth.

Anon 9:15,

Unfortunately race was already brought into the mix. Per usual.

Also, funny how one black man planning to open up an establishment leads to more scrutiny of XII, which surprisingly enough is owned by another black man. And by the way, you can support Obama and still have issues you should probably address at some point.

Anonymous said...

Anon 10:25 - Funny, that race was never brought into this argument when someone simply suggested that the owner consider a different name for his establishment - one person's opinion to improve chances of sucess. I don't see where the offense is. Some are overly sensitive when there's no reason to be. But one thing I would definately agree with that you said:

"you can support Obama and still have issues you should probably address at some point." So true. Let me know when you address yours.

Anonymous said...

Anon 11:32,

I am actually a McCain supporter but I will let you know when I address my issues. It might be awhile.

Let "Liquid" start, if not continue to put or add elegance and sophistication to a place that needs change. There should be no argument on that.
