Like Pizza? You'll Love This

IMG_1147
The Sun and Moon building [1387] recently changed hands and gone is the convenience store that used to occupy the first floor. The word is that a team purchased the building and plans to turn it into a sit-down pizza place. Apparently they have had other such businesses oin other parts of the country.

For those of you puzzling how a pizza place could plan to open right across from Radius at the Ohio, the issue is not so big at it seems. The Radius at the Ohio will serve pizza, but won't be a pizzeria per se. It's going to feature a menu more like that of Tonic.

UPDATE

I'm told this is the place.

So what kind of pizza will they be serving? NY slices? Chicago deep dish? That slop they serve at California Pizza Kitchen? Or will it be that organic, cruelty-free, $27 for a small pizza that seems to be taking over?

I think I know the answer, but I'm waiting for confirmation that I've got the right group.

i wonder if that bldg went for the asking price of nearly $1 million....

Hmmm. Is this one those big, Adams Morgan, late night, greasy pizza joints?

The more pizza the better.

It would be great if the building went for $1 million but I seriously doubt. If someone has a way finding out, please the confirm the closing price.

Please o please just have some actual NY style pizza in this town.

Actually, it'd be lousy if the building went for $1M, because absurd asking prices for places on H Street is already one of the big things holding folks back from opening businesses there.

And speaking of Radius at the Ohio, is there any news re: them?

Didn't Ben Franklin say something like "Pizza is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."
:-) Bring it on. I agree w/ Mike, the more pizza the better.

Nice! Will this place have a liquor license?

Wonder what will happen to all of those folks that hang at that bus stop? It can really be nasty, I even witnessed one dude peeing up against the wall. I wish that DC could build and maintain a public toilet system like they have all over Europe so that folks have a place to go.

I'm pretty sure the Radius is going to end up being a Tonic, in the style of the location over near GW (far more "corporate" feeling than the Mt. P location). So even if it serves pizza from time to time, it won't be anything like Radius (ie no delivery etc).

Diane-

Here in America people use the restrooms in their own homes, friends houses, place of work, places we eat. We don't need giant public restrooms all up and down H Street for the bums to sleep in. I am in Europe now, and I can tell you that most people here don't like them.

Any update about Taylor? They said at the Barracks Row Oktoberfest they were aiming to open around yesterday or today.

Rob,
I think Ben Franklin said that about beer.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I know, just kidding. If they had had pizzerias back then Franklin might've said it about pizza....

Re: public toilets in Europe...there are two kinds...the sort of public port-a-john you might have to pay to get in, and the large public restroom in, say, a metro stop or a busy underground passageway. I don't think people are against those. Sure, anyone would prefer going in their own private bathroom at home, but when you're walking around a city you don't jump in a cab and head to your closest friend's house. You need a public toilet.
Of course I'm arguing for them as a place for non-bums to go...since they charge a small fee, the person w/ no cash will probably still piss in the street.

re: public toilets.

I am pretty sure the guy who pissed on the wall on H street was not someone like you or I, but rather it was a bum. So again, I am not sure what good a bunch of giant electronic toilets on H street would do, except allowing bums a new place to sleep. Plus in London all the public toilets in the underground are past the gates, so you have to pay to use those too.

pizza !!!!! Pizza !!!! Can't happen soon enough.
That problem at the bus stop requires addressing from the metro police. I know at three people who get off a stop early to avoid that group.

RE Peeing in public: Looking out the window of my home overlooking the alley, I can assure you, more often then not it's well dressed (assumingly middle class) and 99.9% African Americans that I see peeing in the alley. So please, don't stereotype the bums you mentioned. Some will sadly say this statement is racist and I am here to say it is FACT! But obviously the Asians, Hispanics, oh, and whites are doing it when I'm not looking.

BTW: Franklin never said that about beer. Stupid rumor that is now plastered in every beer bar and book. He actually didn't even like beer. He said something akin to it about wine.

I do not think this is upscale pizza place. It is probably more like Sbarro. A good example would be Tropicana or Naby Island, which are both fine by me.

My apologies for stereotyping bums. I am glad you are there to stand up for them. I guess for you it is only ok to stereotype blacks. My bad.

I live next to the liqueur store on 3rd on H, and I have not once ever seen a well dressed black man pissing in my front yard (maybe they are just doing it when I am not looking), but I see plenty of bums using my alley wall as their toilet, right after they throw their single of liqueur or beer in my yard.

instead of arguing about stereotypes let's start guessing what it could be ("sit-down pizza place...they own other such businesses in other parts of the country")!

Pizza Hut?
Bertucci's?
CiCi's?
Mellow Mushroom?
Uno's?

Where is the stereotype when J Ro says he sees "bums" peeing in the alley and Anon. 9:08 reports seeing "middle class blacks" in their alley - if both is the reality (and fact) of what they've seen where's the stereotype? Neither said "all bums" or "all middle class blacks"? I don't see the offense here. Maybe someone could explain - without attacking these two people and what they are claiming to have witnessed. I'm just trying to gain a better understanding why ANYONE would piss on someone else's house?

Anonymous said...

Thanks Anon 1:39. That Franklin beer/wine quote has become pretty wide spread. Where is the original source...did he publish that bit of wisdom in his almanac or someplace else?

Anonymous said...

the fact is people piss where they can. i'm all for public toilets. its not like people are gonna say, "hey cool NOW i can be a bum and go homeless cuz i have a proper place to drop it."

we can ignore the problem, or we can help top make it a bit more sanitary.

but it aint going away.

Anonymous said...

"the fact is people piss where they can" - very lame excuse Anon 4:53. I don't see how that EVER justifies people pissing on someone elses house.

I have an idea, why don't you open YOUR home as a public toilet and maybe that will begin to solve part of the problem.

The building that the above poster is referring to (1387 H Street that also come with 5 garages) listed at 900K initially. The price was consistantly lowered until it was listed at 750K and it sold for 630K. Others that have sold this year are 1363 H on 8/22 for 420K, 1104 H on 1/29 for 450K, 1308 H on 4/3 for 470K, 506 H on 6/26 for 628K and 1421 H on 8/21 for 360K. I think that H Street is going to be one of the greatest areas of DC. Because prices are affordable, people can afford to buy the building for their business. Unfortunately, current available listings are WAY high (all of them above 800K...kinda out of wack with what has recently sold) If you are thinking of opening your own business, now is the time to do it on H Street before it becomes "riskless" and only affordable to Ann Taylor.
