Expanded Spa Option @Spoiled & Rotten

Spoiled & Rotten kindly provided these photos to give us a peak inside the newly renovated kids spa portion of the business. The area is now set up so that both parent and child can receive manicures and pedicures. Plus, the renovation means they can handle larger numbers of children for birthday parties and spa days. Spoiled & Rotten offers multiple pricing packages, including Mother Daughter, and Daddy's Little Girl. You can take a look at all of the packages on the website. There is also a childrens clothing boutique at Spoiled & Rotten.

I applaud the owner for her entrepreneurial spirit, but the irony that this place even exists on H street still cracks me up.

I could go on, but I'll be polite, and leave it to poopoo and others to be more "outgoing."

I totally agree with you. The irony is delicious, but I wish Spoiled Rotten much success! If other businesses in the same vein open up, H street will be U street in no time!

tom a,

i don't think there's anything particularly ironic about a kids' spa being located on h street. you might want to check out the demographics of the 20 square blocks surrounding the shop, particularly to its south. there are plenty of parents with disposable income to support such an endeavor.

i'm assuming you're using 'ironic' as in 'incongruous to what might be expected' (what is expected for h street being limited to liquor and hair salons?).

i don't understand the point of your post at all, actually.

when i say i don't understand the point, i mean, what is the positive purpose of what you're saying? you seem to want to crack a joke then defer to poo poo to provide a punchline?

who is poo poo they keep talking about?

Moms on the Hill, MOTH, has over 2300 members on its listserve, many of whom frequent the new businesses regularly. MOTH boundaries reach from M Street SE to Florida ave. Check out Baby Loves Disco or Boogie Babes on a Tuesday morning, or Argo...
Lots and lots of kids in this neighborhood.

SS - Irony refers to the disconnect between what one might expect and what actually occurs. In this case, one might expect a spa for children, which may be associated with wealth, to be located in a neighborhood known for wealth. In this case, however, it is being located in a neighborhood that is not known for wealth. Irony! on top of that, there is the irony of a child oriented store opening in an area where the recent redevelopment has skewed toward adults (bars, restaurants, theater) Double irony!

PS: I understand you were just trying to point out that some rich people live nearby. you are right. they do. I was being willfully ignorant to respond to you willful ignorance. Triple irony!

i'm actually pretty psyched about this joint. i was trying to come up with some smart assed comment, but i can't. i know, i know. incrulous, yeah?

this place is an awesome addition to h street, and i have a feeling they're gonna do really well.

I am planning to bring my neice in for a manicure and pedicure. She'll love the place. And she has plenty of friends with wealthy parents who would love to visit with their daughters.

I'm sure they have a steady clientel or they wouldn't be expanding. She probably does a lot of parties. Sounds like a nice place to have my neice's eighth birthday party. I'll clue her mother in.

^ ^ i included a very similar definition of irony in the post to which you are responding. maybe you didn't read the sentence "i'm assuming you're using 'ironic' as in 'incongruous to what might be expected" in my original post. actually reading what you respond to is helpful in a text-driven mode of communication.

In this case, one might expect a spa for children, which may be associated with wealth, to be located in a neighborhood known for wealth. In this case, however, it is being located in a neighborhood that is not known for wealth.

^ ^ h street is immediately to the south of capitol, a neighborhood known for wealth. not irony!

^ ^ here you have a better point

PS: I understand you were just trying to point out that some rich people live nearby. you are right. they do. I was being willfully ignorant to respond to you willful ignorance. Triple irony!

^ ^ ignorance implies lack of knowledge. nothing in my original post implies lack of knowledge. however, since you missed my inclusion of a definition of irony in my original post and felt the need to repeat it AND seek irony in way that ignores facts to the contrary, you are being 'doubly ignorant'.

typo above: immediately to the south of capitol hill, not capitol.

although one might say h street is immediately to the south of capital, considering how much revenue might be needed to totally revitalize it.

(terrible joke. sorry)

and on a positive note, the renovated spa looks BEAUTIFUL.

hope everyone with disposable income and tikes to spoil drops by.

I just want to point out for any readers not from the area -- H Street is actually NORTH of Capitol Hill.

Also, I don't hate the idea for this place. But I really, really hate the name.

I can kinda see the spirit in which the name is intended. But why would I want a spoiled, rotten kid?

Something like "Mommy's Little Girl" or "All Grown Up," or just about anything else would be better....

SS: "Willful ignorance" is different that ignorance. I was suggesting that you are actually not ignorant and, despite your comments to the contrary, you did understand the concepts of irony that were conveyed but that you either: (1) disagreed; or, (2) were cheerleading for the neighborhood. I'm cool with either.
PS: North indeed
PSS: I like the name. they ARE offering manicures to people who fingerpaint, make mud pies, and pick their noses.

Rick..
I was told The name is Spoiled and Rotten not Spoiled Rotten: Spoiled for Girls and Rotten for Boys. They also cater to boys, so its not just a all girl store. I was told they do face painting for Boys. I havent been there yet but plan to take my daughter.

Anonymous said...

Well, I'm glad they cater to both sexes, but I'll be taking my (future) son to "Bullies, Brats, and Jerks" instead!

Anway, I don't mean to hate on a local biz. I wish them all the best. But perhaps if business doesn't take off they could reconsider their off-putting name.

Anonymous said...

I am sure the name was not meant to be negative. Bullies, brats and jerks is all together negative words, you need to stop being a JERK.

Anonymous said...

Do you really want to take a vote on whether most people think "spoiled" and "rotten" are negative words? Or on whether being a "spoiled rotten" kid is a bad thing?

All I meant to do was express an opinion on the name. I sincerely hope the business will succeed regardless.

Over and out.

oops on saying h street is south of cap hill when it is north. sorry, do not ever depend on me for directions. lol.

yes, er, north.

and yes, i think the spa is gorgeous.

ps: i am neighborhood cheerleading. of course i am. i think the place looks great! i also am of a glass half full mentality about h street. i think the badly run businesses are incongruous to the well-to-do folks who live immediately to the south of h.
and a significant number of folks who live to the north of h as well. for me, it's the badly run businesses that don't fit in, not the well run ones. perhaps a bit of a stretch considering the last few decades of fly by night joints on the street, but in the decades long history of the street as a successful corridor, all these rundown joints are the ones that are incongruous in my eyes.
