Lights out everybody. The following went out on the 6A listserv-
Pepco reported power outage affecting traffic signal lights in the North East area, from 18th Street to 41st Street on Benning Rd. NE and parts of Florida Avenue NE (Near Gallaudet University). The cause of the problem is a feeder outage and 2400 customers are without electrical power. DDOT Rope Unit, Traffic Control Officer's and MPD are on site assisting with traffic control.
I also got an email from a resident of 12th & Maryland who reported having no power. Depending on who you believe, the power may be fixed anytime, or it may not be back up until sometime tonight.
DCist covers the story. So does the Post. According to the Post, around 2,300 customers in NE are currently without power. Obviously, traffic lights, and power to business is down as well as power to residences.

I heard on NPR there were more than 4,000 without power this morning.
There are some others in MD. The number I used comes from the Post, and it only counts people in DC.
can someone have a discussion about why the Safeway at Maryland Avenue, NE has such poor customer service? I complained to the 800# and it seems to be the same.

Welcome to DC grocery stores. That Safeway is awful - as is the Giant at Brentwood. Customer Service is not anywhere in their business plan. I’m just hoping the Harris Teeter set to open at the NY Ave metro is like Harris Teeters in VA. I will pay their exorbitant prices just to escape the hoards of people and bad customer service in that Safeway and Giant.
Simple -- that Safeway has awful service because its employees are members of the United Food and Commercial Workers union -- no incentive to perform well
Also, that Safeway had a pretty gross health code violation last summer so I would stay away. The Giant also has bad service (mostly at the deli counter) but things appear relatively clean there.

I think it has more to do with the type of people who shop there than the employees. Putting up with all of those inconsiderate customers day in and day out can really drive down employee morale.
Who remembers the very first 2 weeks when the "new" safeway opened up after the remodel? It was heaven! That all changed pretty quickly once the regular customers showed up.

well no -- Whole Foods, for one, is famously non-union -- anti-union in fact. Yet all that feels-so-good fair trade coffee and organic California cheese from happy cows -- sold to us by staff who are wonderfully service-minded
Harris Teeter and Trader Joes are non-union too. If you like your grocery stores like a steel mill, union employees are for you.
