Wells' Tax Legislation Passes

The Washington Business Journal reports that the property tax deferments (benefiting businesses hurt by construction on H Street NE and 7th Street SE) proposed by Tommy Wells have passed.

I'm all for the tax break, but I'd love to hear some first person stories about this issue.

I hear people complaining about lack of metro to H Street, but I never hear people complaining about recent construction, other than the traffic and pot holes.

I suppose parking is harder right now, but parking on H street itself was never easy to begin with. How many parking spots have we lost in the area?

I'd love to hear from potential consumers who said they're avoiding H street businesses because of road construction. H Street seems busier than ever, which is a great thing!

This makes me wonder, does any one have any info on the number of people using the new shuttle? I've seen it full, and I've seen it empty. Does anyone know if there are going to be signs indicating the stops? I wanted to take it recently, westbound, but I had no idea where it stopped near the Argonaut, since the west and east stop locations are different.

Tom,
I recently saw a bus stop for the H Street shuttle directly in front of Sticky Rice. I cannot say where there are other stops - probably somewhere in between the contruction crews...

Tom A.,
it stops right outside the Argonaut.
There is a sign.

Speaking of signs, I noticed that there are already banners up for the H St. Festival in September.

Hi Elise,
Do you know who I should contact regarding The H Street Shuttle designated stops? I have had costumers and staff members tell me that the shuttle would not stop to pick up or drop off in front of my restaurant Napa 1015 or my neighbor across, The Tropicana Eatery.
Thanks!
Jorge

Try calling "H Street Mainstreet".
The 1/27/09 blog as a shuttle schedule but im not sure its still correct as there doesnt seem to be consistency at the Gallery Place end. I noticed a shuttle sign outside of Pap and Peteys last week so I would think the signs are up along the entire route.

Elise- I didn't think that it stopped across from Argo going westbound, but I may be wrong. I just hopped on the X2 since it came along anyway.

Jorge,
I'm not sure who to contact about that.

Tom,
it's an east bound stop. If you are headed westbound it picks up outside Rose's Dream.

See, that's why Senate Square is virtually empty. Who in their right mind is going to pay $1,300 for a ROOM? And, shoot, for $3,000 per month, you can get yourself an actual HOUSE.
Talk about wishful thinking. It'd be nice if someone over there wisened up and made that place a deal--if we got that place full of young professionals just waiting to dispose of their income at bars/shops etc., maybe the west end of H would start filling in...

Anon 3:24, when I moved to the DC area in 2000, I had no cash and had 55 grand in school loans. I.e. no house for me even though I could afford the 1400/mo rent for my Courthouse apartment w/out too much trouble. Some people don't want to own (take care) of a house, some people need time to gather a down payment, some people are only staying two years, and some people want to walk across the street to their job at the SEC. So I don't think it's crazy to think someone would pay that rent. Just not enough people will right now.
Tom A., I love Sidamo w/ a capital L-O-V-E, but have been forced to forego a visit there twice because of parking issues. It's a convenience thing...hard day at work, rolling back into town, street's a nightmare, and I've got Sidamo's beans at home. I think I'll keep rolling where if there was a spot right there like there used to be @ that time of night I'd grab it. So I think the construction is definitely cutting into business at the margins...more of those "on the fence" calls go the other way I think.
