Neighbors,
If you live on or near Florida Ave, please come out and let the city know that you don't appreciate your neighborhood being used as a runway for commuters coming in and out of Md. DC for DC residents!
Yes! Let's keep it a haven for thugs and run-down, underutilized eyesores! Say "no" to progress!
6 lanes running through a residential neighborhood is not progress, anonymous lil' fella. Rebuilding the Florida Ave Market, on the other hand, sounds pretty solid. Try comprehending what is written prior to criticizing.
what exactly is it that they're planning to do? expand the road or change what is currently at the florida ave market?
Part of the plan speaks to expanding the sidewalks on Florida without decreasing the traffic lanes. As a part of the residential neighborhood, I feel pretty strongly about the need to decrease Florida to 4 lanes.(as it is everywhere but the 7 blocks before, in front of and immediately following the market)

Not sure how the phrase "no proposed change to the existing street width (6 lanes of traffic)" rises to your claim that the plan is to turn FL ave into a "runway for commuters". If they can add other lanes without the hassle of widening the street, who cares? And if the planned improvements (which you support) are at least in part designed to bring more people into our area, we'll need the additional lanes. Why would you be against this?
Lil' Anon
The problem is that OP is selling this plan with a bunch of pretty renderings of an upgraded Florida Avenue with 31 feet of sidewalk/landscaping on each side, plus the existing 3 lanes of traffic in each direction.
Of course, increasing the sidewalk width would require rebuilding the railroad overpass and removing a school, commercial businesses, and rowhouses. In other words, they're selling a plan that won't work.
This is a blueprint for future growth, and it's important to get the infrastucture details right. The expanded sidewalks are essential for handling the increased pedestrian load from NoMA, Gallaudet, the Florida Ave Market, and the neighborhood south of Florida.
I agree that it's important to attend the meeting to support the widened sidewalks advocated by the Small Area Plan, and to encourage OP to make this happen by reducing the street width to 2 lanes in each direction, as *it already is* on the rest of its length.
There are good and bad things about the existing market, and there are good and bad things in the small area plan. But narrowing Florida to become a safe neighborhood street should be an essential part of this plan to ensure the success of the new development as well as the health and safety of our neighbors.
Oops, I meant 17 feet on each side... still much larger than the existing sidewalks, but much less than can be created with the current roadway width!
What would happen to Litteri's if this goes through?
Both Sang Oh Choi and J Street, the main developers in the market area, have said that they want to incorporate Litteri's into their projects. I think they will fight over them to be one of the marquis tenants.
