A Programming Note

My internet continues to be out of service, so that is putting a slight damper on posting abilities. Hopefully Verizon will get it back up in the next day or so.

UPDATE

Verizon came and repaired the issue during the day. So I have internet access again.

Get a wireless card and start stealing it!

Well since I don't live in the Dark Ages, I HAVE a wireless card. I have to wonder where you live that your neighbors haven't all figured out how to password protect their networks. I thought that became standard about ten years ago even for the techno neophyte. I think I can probably pick up ten or 15 different networks from my house, and every one of them is protected.

can you pick up mine? refuge.

Too far away. I might steal RMT's from the backyard or porch tonight bk I have the password and a deadline.

I am anon 11:47:

Cool your jets there inky, no need for the tone, is all for good fun.

Yes, most people protect their wireless networks, however, most people still use WEP encryption, which can be hacked in about 10 minutes. And there's still a few networks around me, of about 20+, that are unprotected.

Anon 11:47,
my tone was sarcastic (it sounds like you read it otherwise). I was assuming your original comment was also sarcastic.

Obviously I'm not going to hack someone else's network (sketchy), and I don't have time to spend my evenings camping out in coffee shops when I have other work to be doing around the house.

And if anyone else has some downtime it sounds like there's a business opportunity offering lessons to Anon 11:47's neighbors on how to set up passwords on their networks. Who knows what that guy might be downloading on the unprotected ones!

I'm just shocked that it is taking Verizon almost a week to fix the issue. At this point it might take a full week. That's just unbeliveable to me.

My original comment was joke, it looked to me like you took it literally and defiantly declared you "HAVE" a wireless card. Since most computers come with built in wireless these days I assumed anyone would see my comment as a joke. Guess not. ass of u and me...

As for stealing internet, you're the only one mentioning stealing the internet that I can see so far. I merely commented on the state of most wireless network as reported in popular polls. Should be careful about throwing around wild accusations about people. Someone might take what you clearly intend as a joke as something serious and comment on it, which could lead to a day's worth of comments on a topic that should really be focused on how bad verizon is and not that you can't afford comcast cable. Golly.

What IS it with everyone these days? Seems like every innocent comment on this blog these days leads to an argument - whether it's over wireless internet, pregnant parking, a new clothing shop, or opening a low-end grocery store. Has all this teabagging nastiness going on at the other end of Capitol Hill rubbed off on the more laid-back end of Capitol Hill? Has months of being snowed in put everyone on edge? Has the H Street Construction project made everyone angry?

Spring is here folks, the flowers are blooming as are a bunch of new places on H to get out and enjoy your neighbors and neighborhood. Take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy! Look for the good, and try, for a bit, to overlook the many opportunities to snark!

Robby,
Yeah, I just imagine I'd have a hard time concentrating with all the kids running around. I may text you later. The online stuff shouldn't take too long. My main concern is when they will actually fix this. Until they do it not only annoys me, but also annoys the guy I rent a room to as well. I just don't like paying for something they aren't delivering. I'm really hoping that I'll get home and it will be fixed.

Inked - I use comcast for high speed internet and they had some problems on friday/saturday on my block. I waited for 2 days to find out it had already been fixed and all I needed to do was reboot both my modem and my router. Give that a try if you haven't already.

3:02,
I've done that and talked to them plenty. They say they have identified the problem in the alley but can't fix it yet because they are short staffed. So it truly is just a matter of waiting on Verizon. I'll probably end up calling them tonight for an update if there hasn't been any progress today.

djbays said...

Wait, is this because of the wires that were knocked down on Thursday? I think it was a private trash truck that brought them down. I'm no expert, but cable wires strewn all over the alley would be a clear sign of the problem if I were a comcast employee...Maybe we shouldn't have moved them out of the way of passing vehicles (including mine).

inked said...

That was the cause. Verizon and Comcast have been arguing about who owns which wires. Verizon took care of some wires on the third visit (they did nothing the first two visits). Comcast has been out at least twice (including yesterday). But yeah, there are still wires just hanging down in the alley (including one with about 100 feet of slack curled up on the ground).

Verizon restored actual phone service on Saturday afternoon, but apparently it requires going to another location and hooking into the wires there to provide a DSL signal. That is the current difficulty.

If I was close enough I'd share my network with ya inked!

Since I'm not, I'll just have to send some good vibrations instead...

Hope it helps with all the nasty posters.

Hey glad everything is resolved. Here's the Free Wifi Info I am using it now....

wifi.dc.gov/
