DDOT to Update Community on Streetcar Progress



WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Tuesday, April 20 at 6:30 p.m., DDOT Director Gabe Klein and Streetcar Project Manager Scott Kubly will appear at a public meeting hosted by Advisory Neighborhood Commissions 5B, 6A and 6C to update the community on DDOT’s progress on the streetcar project, particularly on the H Street-Benning Road streetcar line. Councilmembers Harry Thomas, Jr. (Ward 5) and Tommy Wells (Ward 6) will make introductory remarks.

DDOT is constructing the H Street-Benning Road streetcar line, which will one day link the Benning Road Metrorail station (Blue Line) to Union Station (Red Line). DDOT will describe what steps the agency is taking to make this initial streetcar line operational by 2012 from the intersection of Benning Road and Oklahoma Avenue to Union Station, and extend it to the Benning Road station after that.

A similar meeting on H Street NE in August 2009 drew more than 100 attendees and served as a catalyst for Klein to reinvigorate the streetcar project, including by announcing his appointment of Kubly to manage the project. By October 2009, DDOT released its plan for a 37-mile streetcar network and held public meetings in all eight wards to seek public comment on the plan.
