I wonder if Tom tried the other pizzas? I will have to try the seafood one because I haven't enjoyed any of the other pizzas I've tried there and had given up on them in exchange for the marvelous rigatoni!

I've had the cape cod casino pizza and the vegetable pizza. The cape cod one was really good. The vegetable one didnt really seem like it came from the same restaurant. I know they are very different ingredients, but I think I could have made the vegetable one at home. But for $9 it was serviceable.

At Matchbox, my gf and I could finish a whole large for dinner for like $22. At Lib Tree, we got two pizzas for like $20 and took home $5 worth of it.

Depending on how you order, you can get Matchbox quality pizza for about 66% of the price

After a couple of tries, I'm still waiting to get Matchbox quality. I'm glad they got a good review though.

Agree with you Dave. Ate there the first time the other night and think it is every bit as good as Matchbox (or 7th Hill). A pizza and a couple of small plates is a good value for two.

Sorry, but am I the only one who thinks Matchbox pizza (and most of their other dishes) is overrated?

What Pizza do you think is better than Matchbox?

There are two categories of pizza.

1) Basic pizza from a carryout pizzeria you can get in under two minutes that consists mainly of sauce, cheese, salted cured meats, and various vegetables
2) Fancy gourmet brick oven (who cares what the oven is made out of anyway???) stuff that goes beyond your traditional pizzeria ingredients..

I wouldn't really cross-compare the two groups. There isnt much competition in the category 2) group. I've really only probably eaten at like less than 10 of those establishments, whereas I've probably eaten at like 50 of the other places. Matchbox might not be that best of group 2) but if anything is better, it is not by much. And everybody is familiar with it so it provides a good measuring stick. I havent had anything considerably better than Matchbox, but I have had much worse

Yes, you are the only one. Matchbox is not overrated. However, 2 Amy's is very much so. Their pizza is undercooked and overloaded with sauce.

The problems with LT's za lies in their crust, cheese and toppings. Their sauce is getting better, though it still lacks some spices. Fresh oregano would help.

I really believe if they switch over to using semolina flour and raise the temperature of the oven, the base will cook into a flaky crust, which is much desired by thin crust lovers.

The toppings should be prepared prior to cooking the pie. Putting a large amount of cold ingredients on the pie creates uneven cooking temperatures. Adding hot ingredients also reduces the time needed in the oven. Remember the only thing that should be cooking is the dough.

They need to get rid of the processed mozzarella. I realize fresh motz is available as an substitute topping, however it should be the standard. Raise the price if needed. Buffalo motz should be the substitute topping.

I really hope they can make some serious changes, because I would love to have a great pizza place close to home. I realize many folks have been deprived of having good za in DC for years, so by comparison LT's isn't that bad. Until then, Matchbox it is.

Pizzeria Paradiso. Even 7th Hill. My recent pizzas from Matchbox have been average, at best.

The one time I went to 7th Hill, I got a pizza that was more of a stew than a pizza, completely wet to the point where the crust decomposed before I could eat it. Not good.

Did I order wrong, or have they gotten better?

Rayful Edmond-
Since you seem to be an expert where are you serving pizza?

@oboe

Yes, I think 7th Hill has gotten better- specifically the crust every time- and yes, you may have ordered the wrong thing. I've had one of the really loaded veggie pizzas with fresh onions and spinach that has left me with soggy crust twice. I stopped ordering that one. The mushroom & goat cheese pizza is a much better bet.

Again, it's been a couple of months since I tried the soggy veggie combo, so it might be worth another try...

I haven't slinged pies in over 10 years. I'm a developer - jack of all trades, master of none.

Not on Parker-

We must have different tastebuds. I hated 7th Hill and think Pizzeria Paradiso is overrated. Here's my list according to Dave's categories.
Group 1:
1. Citi Pizza
2. New York Pizza
3. Al's
4. Today's Pizza

Group 2:
1. Matchbox
2. Bistro Italiano (does this count as group 1 or 2?)
3. Pizza Paradiso/ Liberty Tree (I need to eat more LT to determine it's place of 3rd or 4th
5. 7th Hill

Group 2

Master of none is right, there is fresh oregano in the sauce. Your suggestion that the toppings need to be hot is ridiculous and shows that you know nothing about cooking as storage of those items at anything above 40 degrees would be a health code violation. If you want fresh mozzarella then feel free to pay for it, Matchbox is using the same processed stuff on their pizza and charging $3-5 more per pie.

to anon 4:12,

I think he's referring to putting cooked ingredients on the pie. For example, if you want grilled chicken? Grill it, then make the pie. It takes a little longer since you have to wait for ingredients to be prepared, but it tastes 1000x better.

to anon 4:12,

you're also an idiot.

I haven't had the pizza, but we went on sunday and had the fried clams which ROCKED. They were super fresh and perfectly cooked. Also the fried fish sandwich was pretty darn good.
