Spending ANC Funds

Michael Niebauer of the Washington Business Journal put out what was undoubtedly the most interesting tweet that I saw today. He's talking about the spending habits of a few ANCs in Ward 6. All ANCs get funds from the District government, but they spend those funds in different ways. Some ANCs employ people to do mailings, make copies, take minutes, or complete various other tasks (I have to say that in some cases, but not all, it's hard to see what exactly those employees do). Many ANCs give grants through a formal process, but others do not.  Do you know about your ANC?

Here's Neibauer's tweet:

Audits on 3 Ward 6 ANCs released. Interesting that ridiculously busy 6A spent zero on salary over 2+ years. 6B [and] D spent $69,000 combined.

This was mentioned in the ANC-6A mailing list today, and ANC 6A06 Commissioner Bill Schultheiss replied there with:

Besides the small amount we pay to the have the minutes transcribed and agenda's created each month, we in fact have spent no money for "staff" or office space for at least the last 8 years. We instead give the money entirely to community groups through our grant program.

I think that is a very satisfying use of public money. I don't understand the desire for offices and staff at the ANC level.

I'm not certain how my Commissioner uses the funds available to her (and by extension, us).

Any suggestions for how I would go about finding that out?

JustDowntheStreet,
the funds go to the entire Commission, not to the individual Commissioners.

You can download the reports from the DC Auditor. Some ANCs are late getting their info to the Auditor, and the Auditor isn't finished crunching all the available data.

Yes, I do understand that.
Sorry, semantics and haste don't go well together. But I do appreciate the link.

Many thanks!

ANC-6B is on pace to give $10,800 to Tip Tipton for office space! Not the meeting room for monthly ANC meetings, just space for the Commissioners and staff. Ridiculous!

Tip Tipton is the chairman of the absurd Town Square Task Force. Cozy, ain't it, that ANC-6B is paying Tip so much money for a desk and chair each month?

Residents had to shout down the stupid Town Square Task Force plan to re-route Pennsylvania Avenue SE, because when they asked ANC-6B to hold a public hearing on the foolish $30 million monstrosity, ANC-6B refused to hold a hearing....in order to protect their pal Tip Tipton.

ANC Commissioner Kenan Jarboe, as a member of the ridiculous Town Square Task Force, voted three times by secret ballot, in violation of ANC rules, in favor of spending $30 million to re-route Pennsylvania Avenue SE. Then Jarboe had the gall to write a letter to Hill Rag claiming he was against re-routing Pennsylvania Avenue SE after he was for it, and for it, and for it.

Thanks, DC Auditor, for exposing this outrageous rent payment to Tip Tipton.

Voters in ANC-6B! Do something about this on November 2!

Vote for Janezich, Pate, Frishberg, Townsend, Flahaven, and all the rest of the residents who are running against the ANC-6B incumbents because this ANC hates residents.
