"traditionally black neighborhood"?

it's been occupied by a variety of people for a verrrry long time. blacks are only the most recent of occupants. swampoodle was actually full on, double rainbow irish in the first part of the 1900s.

Not to hijack (but I will), but I saw this on cnn.com about America's best new pie shops, and our DDP was included: http://www.cnn.com/2010/TRAVEL/12/01/five.to.go.pie.shops/index.html?hpt=Sbin

Two quick thoughts:

1. Nice to get national recognition of our area, and DDP seems to bring a lot of attention our way, but--

2. DDP's prices are around $2-3 more expensive per slice than ANY of the others!! And some of the others are in pricey areas like Brooklyn and San Fran! DDP Take note--your prices ARE TOO HIGH!!

Agreed. I love the place, but it's too expensive. I honestly believe if they lowered their prices a little, they would actually make more money from volume.

I still don't get the "it's too expensive" stuff. How much do you eat?

I weigh 235#, I eat a ton, and a single slice of SMOG from DDP fills me up. Getting filled up for under $10 doesn't seem very expensive to me.

Comparing the slice prices in the CNN article is meaningless; there's no indication of how big the slices are or how thick the pies are. If I said you could have a slice for $1, would that be a good deal? What if the slice was paper-thin?

Chris--it's that you can't get out of DDP AT ALL for under $6.50, while at the other places, they have slices starting at $3-5.

Also, I'm not buying your assertion that you can't compare prices of slices (slice price?) without full information. Most people know what they are expecting when they hear of "slice of pie". Moreover, the slices at DDP aren't even really that big, and CERTAINLY not big enough to justify the price disparity. Other slices would have to be wafer thin for that argument to hold water.

When I walk by DDP most days (and I walk by it often) it's largely empty. I think that speaks volumes.

Totally agree that it's a few dollars too expensive for the price. I love the place and would hit it once a week if I could get a slice of savory and a slice of sweet for $10 or less.
