This just in via Twitter,
Horace and Dickie's has leased the building next door.
Horace [and] Dickie's has leased bldg at 12th and H for expansion!!! Breakfast, bakery, sit down fish dinners! One of my old faves on ! Wow! 11 minutes ago via Twitter for BlackBerry®
This was actually suggested several years back, but Horace and Dickie's vetoed the idea back then. The times they are a changing. This place is going to be packed.

Hooray!
Funny, when the new paint job went up, I just assumed that H&D was expanding into that space. Then a big "For Lease" sign went up, making me think that wasn't going to happen.
You watch, this place is going to be huge on the New H Street.
Good for them. No doubt this will be great for their business. I have often wondered whether they could become the H-Street counterpart to Ben's Chile Bowl.
nice.
This is cool.
The Ben's comparison is spot on, the burgeoning neighborhood has given a classic establishment new life. Can't wait for the H&D's gift shop!
Are they going to call it H&D's Next Door and cater to the highfalutin' crowd that never quite felt comfortable frequenting the original joint?
that would be the wise move dolemtie. call it H&D's Lite.
i'm intrigued by the mention of a bakery
Bad news. These people are horrible neighbors for those of us who live around them. You don't have to smell their old burnt grease. I don't eat there anymore.
Is faluting (falutin') a verb?

I faluted down the street today. H&D grease has been designated a historical district by now - try and get rid of it and find the ANC breathing down your neck. I was there yesterday, it does a body good. Or a hangover better.
I like falutin' melodious tunes as a stroll down H Street dodging hobos and chicken bones.
Wylie Says
This is horrible news.. They are a horrible neighbor.. the patrons use the bathroom in the alley on the sidewalks, its horrible.
They make more money there than anyone and could care less if H Street improves.
check out their food sanitation score sometime.. constantly cited for food, handling and rat issues. Your crazy to eat there.. They hire the bumbs to bread the fish in the morning.
I don't think H and D has even the same customers as Ben's.. Bad comparison.
There is nothing good that will come of this.. Poor parking, more trash and more rats.
I agree with Wylie. This is bad news for the neighborhood. While, I love the food. These guys FAIL big time in the being a good neighbor department. They need some serious ANC oversight before this expansion gets approved.
They don't have the same customers as Ben's? I eat at Ben's all the time, and I eat H&D's all the time.
i don't think it's healthy to eat at ben's or h&d "all the time" (what, three meals a day? LMAO). anyway, with the sitdown aspect, the element of alley-as-bathroom (which I have never witnessed) should be gone. Hopefully sit down patrons will also no longer illegally park on the corners of 12th and Wylie (making it impossible to see oncoming traffic when turning left or right from Wylie). With a Ward 6 only sign on the north side of Wylie, I'm not sure if this will substantially worsen the (legal) parking scenario (again, will sit down diners be willing to risk being ticketed to park illegally and sit down/wait to be served?).
we'll see.
i do think it's odd that h&d seems to be the only establishment whose food i can actively smell when i step outside my house, on occasion (for example, i never smell, say, sushi wafting out of sticky rice, or even the smell of popeyes while on wylie). the word is, h&d dumps rivers of grease into the alleyway behind them; again, I have never personally witnessed this.
Can anyone provide a link authenticating past violations?
And has anyone actually seen Horace or Dickie? Do they work in the store? Have I bought a piece of cake from them without knowing it? I think I may have only been in that place three times.
methinks some of you newer posters should read this old thread:

Great, I love the fish but the parking situation is a mess. I can spend 20 minutes or so looking for parking.
For parking, just try the North side of Wylie Street or just put on your blinkers and sit at the corner of 12th and Wylie.
They are terrible neighbors. As a person that has lived near them for 11 years we find fish bones, cartons of tartar sauce and red sauce and paper bags all over the neighborhood. On several occasions we have asked for their assistance to help clean the area up and they always said no. Their customers park on the sidewalk and drip oil, drive down the walk cut at the corners.
GROSS!!!!!!!!
Wylie street? They should call it whiney street!
your complaints about trash and urination are exactly why this is great they they will have seating and a bathroom.
i have a take out place right next to me, and i would love for them to offer seating so people wouldn't just sit in their car and eat, tossing out the garbage in my tree box and leaving.
parking is only going to get worse for you guys.
and not because on one restaurant.
Personally, I think people need to stop complaining about parking...everywhere. If you live along an urban strip, you are going to have people park nearby to goto bars and restaurants. Thats life.

. here is some info for you. By the way, H and D changed the name to 12 street carryout.

To compare Ben's Chili Bowl to Horace and Dickies..is crazy.. Do you think Obama would go to HandD... the place is nasty inside.
Having worked in restaurants before - that list is damn near as good as it gets. If you want clean, eat at home. They have 6 critical violations, 2 corrected on site.
Here. Your typical AuBonPain has 7 critical violations, none which could be corrected on site. The form is a bit different, but you can get the same info.

So, restaurants are dirty. Doesn't matter if it is a fish place that annoys you or that place you run into to get a croissant before work.
Now that I learned how to search, Ben's had 4 critical violations and 13 non-critical last time they DoH stopped by.

I've gotten sick eating at Ben's *and* Au Bon Pain, so ou couldn't chosen any worst examples. LMAO.
Hey, Tony, do you live in the neighborhood?
Do the other posters saying we shouldn't complain about parking live in the neighborhood?
First of all, I find it laughable that someone thinks I shouldn't complain about *illegal* parking. What, breaking the law is all good now? I'm sorry, I'll set up my crackhouse in your neighborhood ASAP, then.
ps: Remember, some of us didn't "come to the nuisance". When I came here, parking was plentiful because only the people who actually lived here came to park (a lot of the patron foot traffic on H back in the day was just that, people arriving on foot, usually via bus (but also people parking directly on H, where parking used to be pretty decent)). I never clamored for a load of bars to open. It's all good that those guys are successful, but don't act like we're all hanging out in the bars and then stumbling home to complain about parking. I never had a problem with crime until years *after* the bars showed up (some yahoo took my car for a joyride...when I had to park a block from my house due to the lack of parking...zing!).
anyway, now back to your regularly scheduled binge drinking. as you were, people.
So Coyote do you call 311 and ask for parking enforcement? Illegal parking is a law enforcement problem, not a H & D problem.
Who knows, just maybe H & D will put an an outdoor patio with tables out there someday, but no doubt you will have a complaint about that too. I like their food and the people that work there, I'm glad that they are expanding. I think that it's a smart business move.
I live here. Been doing so for a while, but am thinking of moving over the river as prices are rising too high around here. As for parking - it's a city. I've never lived in one where parking was easy. You can always try your luck over at Wylie Ct - a few nights or so won't get you towed. Just park on the far end from 13th.
