PoP: Fly Lounge Owners Buying on H Street?

DSC_0061

Prince of Petworth offers up a little scuttlebutt regarding the possible acquisition of a double property in the 1300 block of H Street by the owners of Fly Lounge. This would be a large property owned by Evolve, and adjacent to Evolve's new headquarters. Several months ago I spoke with an Evolve representative who told me they planned to lease the space to an established restaurant (but had not yet identified a tenant). Is the scuttlebutt true? I can't say.

Uh oh. Here come the velvet rope douchebags.

Fly Lounge is terrible, if this place is like Fly, it probably won't do well on H St. An ESL/Marvin/St.Ex vibe would be good.

I hope that this rumor is false. I do not want a "Fly Lounge" in my hood. I agree with Maverick and Goose: Something like a Cafe St.Ex would be a great addition.

takes all type. Whats the big deal if theres a sky lounge. When I open my old school rave lounge/cuddle puddle, i'm sure you'll bitch about that too, lol.

gah, please keep the red carpet douchebags out of this neighborhood!!!

What kind of people does this place attract? I'm lost about why people are against this. Admittedly the descriptipon sounds lame but other than that?

I'm so glad to see that a lot of the charming "open minded" people who comment on this blog don't limit themselves to only hating hipsters and others who don't fit into their personal definition of acceptable people on H St.

I'm personally not a fan of Fly Lounge, but I bet they'll be responsible business owners who respect the neighborhood and it's residents.

Is this going to be more like Twelve XII or Toyland? Most people won't admit it, but clientele will make a huge difference as to whether most of us will accept this place.

I'm with Tony T, the more the merrier. If you don't like it don't go. So tired of the negative, they aren't apart of my clique type of thinking on this blog. I hope it brings in all types of people the red carpet folks included. H st doesn't belong more to you than it does to anybody else!!!!

i would definitely take velvet rope folks over the irish any day. keep h street irish free!

Just because they opened Fly does not mean they plan on opening the same concept here. I'm good friends with one of those guys and they have great ideas. They are NOT opening another Fly. Regardless, Fly was awesome, first two years were amazing. Some of you people are just plain ignorant.

remember that clutch article that ya'll were offended by?

I over heard the FLY guys today at SOVA talking about the project. Seemed like a cool place like Tryst in Adams Morgan. From what they were saying Rick Astley is the majority investor in the project. You might remember him from his hit Never Gonna Give You Up http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ

My wife and I saw Rick Astley last week with a broker on the street. We stopped to say hello as we are big fans from the 80's. He said him and his boyfriend are looking to open a open mic music venue in addition to the venture with the guys at fly night club. They were popping in the 800 block of H Street so hopefully this will happen.

Kenny G said...

Think the Fly people would come to a Street Talk gathering to explain the concept?

Anonymous said...

Rick Astley? Seriously?

If this is true, and it's a very different concept from Fly, maybe it will be just bizarre enough to work on H.

I heard the same thing about Rick Astley and his partner. They moved into a row house on the Hill next to my boss. My boss said they are super friendly neighbors and are looking to invest into a live music place on H Street. This would be a welcomed addition in my eyes. Think about how cool an open mic night in DC would be?

Are you folks pulling an extended practical joke about the Rick Astley angle? I know a lot of snarky types who use his 'Never Gonna Give You Up' video to pull tricks on people (saying the video link is one thing, but then it turns out to be RA's vid; it even has a term: being Rick-rolled).

Are y'all Rick-rolling us? C'mon, April Fools was two weeks ago.

Oh, I knew a guy who was affiliated with Fly, Chuck Koch (not related to the Koch Brothers..at least I hope not). He used to have a classic party called Soul Camp near GW.

(And if you Google Soul Camp and come upon the tragic story regarding its bouncer, know that it was an isolated horrible incident in an otherwise incredible weekly party run).

Rick Astley moved here because of Queen Vic. Or maybe it was Dick Nasty. I cant remember what I heard

Hey frozen tropics, my name is Tom and I am a part of the proposed project. We have been finalizing our business plan and concept the past few weeks and believe we have hashed out a wonderful diner/bar. Once all the details are hashed out we would love the chance to bring the neighborhood through the plans at SOVA. Additionally Rick Astley is involved, it isn't a joke as a few people have stated before. We have spent a lot of time and effort on the project thus far and don't see it as a joke. We hope you don't either. If you have any questions I can be reached at tom.harrington@gmail.com

Cannot wait for this!!! Diner plus bar plus Rick Astley equals super cool. Rock on guys. I know this is something the 14th Street, U Street, Columbia Heights don't have. Awesome stuff!

Anonymous said...

For those who don't get the joke, the dude isn't gay and lives in London.

Anonymous said...

This could be the best scuttlebut in the history of scuttlebuts! Love Rick from the 80s! Going to be super cool! Rock on fly guys

Anonymous said...

Rick Roll'd. Would like to know what the actual plans are for this place, though.

Anonymous said...

Since when is Rick Astley "super cool"? WTF is going on in this thread?

Anonymous said...

Thanks for posting Tom. I look forward to hearing more about your plans down the road. Please let us know when you will be @ SOVA speaking to the community.

This is the best news I have heard in a while. Open mic/diner, no neighborhood has this, NONE! H Street is the best and I am proud to live here

Thanks for investing Rick!

A little birdie told me that the synth player from Spandau Ballet is opening a firing range in the H Street storage building.

MOVE OVER Benjamin Franklin woops I mean Joe Englert theres a new sheriff in town. Rickys not reassembling Chicken Coop's and calling it a bar like Joe does.

Ragin Ricky is putting BIG money into this Street HUGE MONEY!!!!!!!!!

Oh, That H street said...

Come on, folks...There is about as much truth to these posts as there is to the rumor my cats are opening up their venue "The Kitty Cat Club" on Benning Rd. Don't spread this Ricky Astley/Diner rumor around, you will come off as a fool.

Anonymous said...

@Oh, That H street - how do you know? are you a part of the project?

Anonymous said...

I'd like to thank Alan Page for explaining rickrolling to us all, since it couldn't possibly be something that pretty much everyone online has been familiar with FOR YEARS.

Anonymous said...

After reading several posts about the need to be more open minded, I've decided to watch every episode of Entourage as a first step toward being open minded about douchebags.

Anonymous said...

open mic with a celebrity name behind it is going to be great for H. cannot wait to see all the undiscovered talent that is identified there. DC has needed something like this for years. Thanks fly guys

Anonymous said...

What does open mic mean? Anyone gets up and does something and get discovered?

Anonymous said...

I heard Chuck from Fly teamed up with another powerhouse DJ already established on H. Not sure who that could be. I'm sure it would be quality though. I also heard the Evolve people were known to be shysty. So hopefully they aren't pulling a fast one on Chuck with the sunglasses guy.

Help!!
I hate to hijack this, but I just looked up today and saw that XII Lounge is building a huge roof deck. I'm a neighbor, and that place is insanely loud already. Was there any discussion or approval of this?

A super reliable source told me that the guys from Maroon 5, Tribe Called Quest & A-Ha teamed up with the Fly corp for this venture. Sounds like its gonna be AMAZING!!!!!!
