well no one will confuse that with Titan of Trinidad..
Went to the new spray park/playground the other day with our two year old and he really loved it. We were enthusiastic about this new addition to the 'hood until a group of 9 or 10 rowdy teenagers showed up, openly smoking pot and who made it clear they were taking over the area for themselves. The parents with toddlers all cleared out, in a hurry. Is this a common occurrence? Do the police keep an eye on this park?
It is up to all of us to act to confront this behavior. Do what you feel comfortable doing- but do something. Tell the guys it is not acceptable behavior. I know that can be scary but if your up for it please do. We can't let only a few people stick their necks out. If you are not comfortable with that call the police and the park ranger. I personally have never seen the police patrol and I am there all the time. We plan a meeting with the Councilmember, etc to get to the bottom of this and get solutions. Hope you will join us.
Sorry to hear about that. If it happens again, definitely call 911 to alert MPD to the behavior. MPD is around fairly regularly, so they will likely respond quickly. Also make the local ANC (Tina Laskaris aware if it becomes a pattern & you are not getting a response from MPD). DPR should also be aware of the issue. What time of day did this occur? Was it a Saturday?
I have called 911, texted the anonymous police line, etc with no response more than once. I usually do not think pot smoking us that big a deal. But brazenly somking pot in a large rowdy group right by the little kids playground at 4pm is about sending a message to people using the park that all are not welcome. Kids should not have to be around that. There is room for everyone at the park but not room for that kind of behavior. It is amazing how MPD is blowing us off. It is some of the same kids every time smoking. MPD should treat this as more of a priority!
When we were there with the granddaughter ( 5 1/2) there were a bunch of rowdy kids that were joking and shooting fireworks at us. While they did ask if they hit us with the pop bottle rocket, I said no but that we were leaving incase one did. These kids live across the street from the park to the south. Same kids???
Call MPD every time. The more calls, the better chance of getting a response. It all goes into a log.
It is so selfish to raise a child in that neighborhood so you can be close to trendy bars.
You are an idiot 6:31pm.
I had to help a kid get his ball back from a few teenagers who had "borrowed" it (without asking, naturally). They gave the ball back when asked. Most of these kids respond well to one-on-one respectfully made requests.
I sent an email to the email address listed asking to be added to the list but have not heard back from them. Is the email account being monitored?
@Anon 6:31:00 PM,
People don't raise their children here "to be close to the bars." They raise their children here because by and large Trinidad, H St, and Rosedale are family friendly and affordable neighborhoods. At least that is why my husband and I chose to raise our family here.
8:59,
When did you send it? Maybe they were offline for the weekend.
Karen, the fact that you can't even spell your own name correctly makes me extremely concerned for your children. Between the schools in this area and what will obviously be misguided mentoring from you, the poor little things are doomed.
Anon 11:28, allow me to remove the thin reed upon which your weak case above rests--Keren is a common Israeli name, it happens to be the name given to Job's daughter in the Bible. Perhaps this may account for why your mouth tastes and smells like feet about now?
10:05,
Don't waste your time with 11:28/6:31. That person is CLEARLY a troll.
you mean Job's little girl that God killed? Totally awesome name.
Nope. It seems FT readers aren't scripture buffs--I am Jack's complete lack of surprise. I'm no buff, I just know Keren is a Hebrew name. But according to Rabbi Google: Keren was a daughter born to Job *after* his prosperity is restored (i.e. after all his hellish trials and tribulations).
ah, so the half-sister of a girl god killed on a bet. That totally changes everything.
Hehe, I like that my name started a comment debate.
Since some folks seem to be interested. The name Keren comes from this:
"Keren-happuch is the youngest of three daughters who are born to Job after his ten children die in consequence of the difficult to understand trial that God allows satan to visit him (Job 42:14). Keren-happuch's two sisters are called Jemimah and Keziah. The book of Job informs us that "in all the land no women were found so fair as Job's daughters" - Job 42:15
I've been waiting patiently for the wars to begin between the parents with kids and the single people. I really hope this thread is the start of something good!!!!!!!!
8:15,
I highly doubt it will start here. In Trinidad we have a pretty diverse group of adults who engage with the kids over here. Some of us are parents, and some are not parents. My advice would be to stop trolling. I don't have kids, but I'm really excited about this new Google group. I know the people who started it, and they are awesome people who are really engaged with the larger community. I also think it is going to be a terrific resource for parents/potential parents in our area.
So, Keren, you're trying to tell me you're pretty smokin' then?
Could someone please tell me the name of the playground in the picture? My toddlers would love it! Thank you. (Karen, spelled the boring way)
Karen,
It's Joe Cole Park (1200 block of Morse St NE).
