WAMU: Spingarn Alumni Brace for Closure
WAMU has a nice short piece in which the discuss the impending closure of Spingarn High School with alumni. Authorities have pledged to renovate the school and reopen it with a new focus on career preparation and technical education (likely incorporating the streetcar maintenance facility that is to be built on school grounds).

Maybe this is where they could put the new Whole Foods?
I was in that school in 2012. It's an embarrassment. The paint was LITERALLY coming off the ceiling and the walls in big chunks. The classroom equipment in a science lab was easily 40 years old. I'm glad it's being renovated.
I assume this is good news for the streetcar maintenance facility? What's latest on that fight?
This site should remain on the DC books. Once you give up (sell) this type of real estate you never get it back. Image if someday DC high schools are good enough that people would actually allow their kids to go there. Where would we put a highschool if DC sells off its stock?

3:49 - they ARE going to keep the building, and rehab it and use it as a technical school.
At least that's the current plan.
This school, as listed on the DCPS site, had a 9% pass rate on their proficiency test. I'll say that again...NINE percent. that means NINETY ONE percent failed. And with less than half occupancy. Any school with that piss poor performance should have been closed long long long ago. NINE percent!!
