Just looked at the pics of this place- looks pretty nice BUT an American Flag painted on the floor to be walked on? As a 23-year Navy veteran, that kind of turns my stomach.

Anon 4:25pm -- where did you see that? I looked through their gallery and the photos in the linked-to press pieces but didn't see it.

They seem to have painted a very stylized version of the flag (black & white w/36 stars, five bars) on the rooftop deck.

That doesnt sound like an American flag at all

How are you going to be in the Navy for 23 years and not know what the American flag looks like? That isn't an American flag in that picture.

That's the Flag of the New-Confederate states of America. The 36 stars are for the states they hope
will join and the black and white bars are to show
that race mixing will never be tolerated.

Don't worry Anon 4:25, Avery's is not anti-American. In fact, I had the pleasure of meeting the owner of Avery's, Avery, and he is a very thoughtful, intelligent young man, who from the brief conversation I had with him, was quite pro-America (we met last summer around 4th of July and we had discussed America and freedom generally regarding his fight with the local ANC to keep his rooftop open later than midnight, like Rock and Roll Hotel can, along with other white owned bars.) I happen to be white, and not one for believing racism is really a big issue anymore, but after speaking to him, it certainly seemed that, at a minimum, stigma related to predominately black clubs (a la XII, Tru Orleans, etc) has prevented him from getting the easements (permission) necessary to stay open past 12 on his rooftop--despite having basically the only rooftop on the north side of H st. Despite it all, he was positive, did not engage in any negative talk, and definitely seemed pro-American. In fact, as Anon 6:32 pointed out, I am not surprised at all that he would have a Confederate States flag on the floor. From this New Yorker's point of view, that's where it belongs.

i hope that the ding dong hiding behind the anonymous handle truly wasn't in the navy for 23 years, because that would be a pretty damning assessment of this country's soldiers' knowledge and abilities.

i'm hoping it's a troll, which are usually the types that hide behind the "anonymouse" tag anyway.

Poo--you reveal your own ignorance. There are no Soldiers in the Navy; we have Sailors.
