DC Diner will open April 1st at 802 13th Street. The hours are still somewhat in flux, but they will open at 6am and likely stay open until 4am (almost 24 hours). DC Diner will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. It's a father and son team with previous experience running a small restaurant. They'll offer breakfast all day with items like waffles, omelets, and salmon cakes. Look for a rotating menu of five sandwiches, including a turkey burger, a no filler crab cake (made from scratch, and broiled, not fried), a shrimp salad po boy, a grilled chicken sandwich, and a vegetarian sandwich with portabello mushroom, bell peppers, onions, and spinach. Sandwiches will come with chips, or hand-cut fries.
The small space (about 600 square feet) limits indoor seating inside to side counters only, but they will have tables outside to take advantage of the very wide sidewalk.
DC Diner officially opens April 1st (6am), but the owners are inviting local kids to stop by Saturday March 26th from 11am-3pm for a pre-opening celebration. They'll have hotdogs, hamburgers, balloons, and face-painting. Big thanks to reader Karen Ramsey for the original tip.

This will be the Nth place to open here. They're stuck by the fact that it's a really small space -- not much room for sit down eating, not much display space for baked goods, etc.. I think any food place there is going to struggle unless they're able to buy the Platinum Hair Gallery, knock down walls, and use the whole space. Which probably won't happen.
Sorry, didn't mean to be *quite* so much a downer. I do wish them the best.
Curmudgeon,
It's not mentioned in the post, but the same guys are actually renting the now vacant Platinum Hair space as well. I think both are 15 year leases.
This place looks very promising.
No way this place will stay open 22 hrs a day. We'll see how long that lasts.
grand opening...grand closing
most of these spots on h st, minus maybe 7 are just floating in the wind. there isnt enough disposable income on h st to support all these places. not to mention all the new apt buildings that are vacant
What vacant apartment buildings? If the food is good, this place will do just fine, and even better when Blue Diner opens. Making that corner, a diner destination is not a bad idea.
Do you know if DC Diner was able to keep the roaches from Danny Todds [sic] and Chef Corner Cafe?
They moved to your house Tom.
Tom,
Never having seen roaches in either place I really can't say. I do know these guys did pretty extensive renovations in the space and the kitchen looked completely insect free when I was in it.
