Hush...what's that creeping along the H Street Corridor? It's Krampus, the mythical Alpine beast who visits us each year to raise spirits while raising money for local foster kids. This is one of my personal favorite local events, and I highly recommend taking part. This blog is proud to once again be a sponsor for Krampusnacht on H Street.
On Dec. 3 Krampus will team up with Santa to decide who's been naughty and who's been nice during H Street's annual Krampusnacht celebration. Now in its fifth year, the event raises funds for Santa's Cause DC, a District based charity that benefits the approximately 75 foster kids of Family Matters of Greater Washington. There's no cover charge, but the organizers do request a $10 donation for the pre-walk reception and after party (100% of proceeds go to Santa's Cause DC). It's a great cause, and the team puts on quite the show each year.
The evening kicks off with a family friendly reception that will appeal to folks of all ages. Kids can visit with Santa Claus, create their own Krampus mask, get their faces painted, and post for photos with Santa and Krampus. Everyone can enjoy the Festivus performances by fire artists Dance Afire, and traditional folk dance by the Foggy Bottom Morris Men.
Following the reception, the extraordinary Batala Drummers will amplify their rhythms as jolly St. Nicholas leads the Krampus onto H Street for a short charity Krampuslauf (a Krampus walk). Participants then will reconvene at Gallery O on H (1354 H St.) for more performances, sponsor giveaways, an costume contest and an afterparty with Dj Scruggz. The reception and walk are open to all ages, but bring your ID for the 21+ only after party. Costumes (or any reasonable attempt) are highly encouraged.
Evening Schedule:
5 p.m. - Santa's Cause D.C. Benefit Reception
7:15 p.m. - Krampuslauf Walk
- Start: 1354 H St, NE (Gallery O on to the other side of H Street, and head west to 12th & H, cross H Street and stop at 12th & H for break, before continuing east to return to Gallery O on H
KrampusnachtDC is an inclusive community event allowing the creative types to celebrate the holiday season with a twist while raising awareness and funds for SantascauseDC. Having originated in 2012 with a small group of friends who enjoy creating folkloric costuming, KrampusnachtDC quickly has grown into a dedicated group of organizers and performers who volunteer their time and talents. The magic and enjoyment of Krampus is supported by local business such as Atlas Vet,
Capitol Fringe, Cirque Du Rouge, Cusbah South Asian Spice, Danger Delicious Pies, D.C. Brau, Frozen Tropics Blog, Gallery OonH, Impala Cantina y Taquria, Little Miss Whiskeys, Palace Productions, The Pug, Rock and Roll Hotel, Scout Properties, Smith Commons & the Queen Vic.
Volunteer sign language interpreters will also be provided.

First of all, its not an official Krampus event unless the guy with the tuba flamethrower shows up too. Secondly, as a true Krampushead, I don't think "real krampuses" would smoke e-cigarettes. The would be my main complaint about H St's Krampus event last December. Every where you looked a Krampus was puffing away on an e-cigarette. There were more clouds of smoke than backstage at a Cyprus Hill concert on April 20th. I said nothing about this transgression at the time but deep down I know that they know that what they were doing wasn't very Krampus. So if you going to be a Krampus at this or any other Krampus event, please do the right thing and leave the e-cigarettes at home. If you really need a nicotine fix during the Krampus event, try chewing some gum instead or practice mindfulness meditations.
Don't be the Krampus that ruins the whole event for everyone by e-cigaretting!!
