Kingman Island Bluegrass & Folk Festival May 13

static1.squarespace

It's not too late to get tickets for the Kingman Island Bluegrass & Folk Festival. The all ages festival raises money for the Living Classrooms Foundation, and runs from noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday, May 13. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. General admission tickets are $30 for those 13 years of age and over. Children 12 and under will be admitted free of charge. You can also buy beer, cocktail, and sandwich tickets online to cut down on the time you spend in line.

Here's their video of highlights from last year

The Festival is, of course, held outdoors on Kingman Island. The Festival is in its eighth year, and its second year as a "zero waste" event. As a zero waste venue, they encourage you to bike, or use public transportation to get to the Festival. All vendors will use recyclable or compostable food serviceware, and volunteers will help you sort your discards at the waste stations. There's a huge line-up of performers at several stages, including in the Kids Zone.

The main entrance to the island (roughly 575 Oklahoma Avenue NE) is located at the back of RFK Stadium Parking Lot 6, just south of Benning Road. If you are traveling by streetcar you can disembark at the Oklahoma Ave and Benning Road stop and walk a short distance. The entrance is about a mile from the Stadium-Armory Metro stop (Orange and Blue lines), but there will be a free shuttle from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. that day. You can also hop on your bike, cruise down the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail, and take advantage of the low cost bike valet that will be available.
They have full travel directions in the FAQ. Speaking of the FAQ, you are welcome to bring the following with you:
  • Kids
  • Small, soft-sided coolers
  • Nonalcoholic drinks and food - ONLY IF FOOD IS STORED IN REUSABLE CONTAINERS, TUPPERWARE, REUSABLE DRINKING BOTTLES ETC.
  • Chairs, blankets
  • Dogs (must be leashed)
Do NOT bring outside alcohol, or tents.

Rocklands BBQ will serve up some Southern style favorites, or you could patronize one of the food trucks on hand for the Festival. Vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free options will be available.
