It was a Bad Week for Travel on H Street NE

Last week was a rough one for some traveling along the H Street NE Corridor. The Washington Post and WJLA report that 37 year-old Tameeka Barker was arrested after she attacked a pregnant woman aboard an X2 bus on Thursday (June 21st). Court documents (posted online by WJLA) indicated that Barker allegedly began randomly striking passengers when she boarded the bus. When a pregnant passenger attempted to exit the bus Barker shouted "Bitch, you pushed me!" and began punching and kicking the woman in the stomach after the victim fell. The victim cried out for help, informing other passengers that she was pregnant. Other passengers intervened and a male passenger "forcefully removed" Barker from the bus. But with both Barker and the pregnant passenger now off the bus, Barker continued her assault on the woman striking her with an umbrella and a glass liquor bottle. The victim, who did not know Barker, suffered a miscarriage.  The assault took place in the 200 block of H Street NE (crossing the Hopscotch Bridge). Barker was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault While Armed and Assault with a Dangerous Weapon.

A multi-car crash on Saturday ended with one car on its side. WUSA9 reports that, amazingly, only one person suffered serious injuries and five others sustained minor injuries. The crash occurred near the intersection of 4th and H Street NE a little after 3pm. A witness in the area reported seeing one of the vehicles driving at a very high rate of speed prior to the crash, and it appeared that the driver may have been arrested at the scene.

Later that day a young man was killed while riding his bike on H Street NE. The Washington Post reports that 19 year-old Malik Habib was fatally injured when he was struck by a charter bus after his bike tire got caught in in a streetcar rail running along the road. This happened in the 300 block of H Street NE just after 9:30pm on Saturday. TheWashCycle has some thoughts on the accident that are worth a read.

Below are more photos of the multi-car crash.

and the previous week was the hit & run drunk-driver who killed the motorcyclist on H.

A miscarriage, how heartbreaking. Crazy people are dangerous and they seem to love being on the bus. Which is why the bus is my least favorite mode of travel.

The X2 assault is absolutely heartbreaking. I've ridden that line a great deal over the years and it's generally ok. Rarely do you see anything that seems like a real threat, and the X2 runs when nothing else will.

All of these stories are pretty awful really, and it's a lot to happen on one corridor in the span of just three days.

By DC law; armed self defense is prohibited on metro rail/buses.

Omg, wow. How tragic.

The only thing I'll add is that I really think this emphasizes in my mind that bikes should not be allowed on H Street. There's too much traffic and too many kinds of traffic there already. Cyclists have designated lanes on I Street and G Street.

And by the way, I second inked's thoughts. I've ridden the X2 off and on over 10 years now, and I rarely see any "crazy" that isn't just harmless. The bus is a great option and far more frequent and far reaching than our cute light rail.
