You can now visit Buredo in NoMa as well as on H Street NE (pictured above)
On Wednesday I posted about multiple places in the process of opening in the neighborhood, as well as a couple of new spots headed our way. It turns out we have two more recent openings. Local independent bookseller Politics and Prose (1270 Fifth Street NE) opened their Union Market on June 19th. A note on their website about the opening described the new outpost as "intimate but big enough to carry a range of books and non-book items for all ages." The store will hold author talks in a space at the rear of the shop, and will bring "classes, workshops, and children’s activities" to the neighborhood. The note also referred to The Village Café (1272 5th Street NE), a café set to open next door to the bookstore sometime this summer.
The Washington Business Journal covered The Village Café back in late February of this year. More recently LISC DC posted a Q&A with the founders. More details about what you can expect are available on The Village Café's (funded) Kiva loan page. Kiva deals with crowdsourced microloans, and The Village Café received an interest free loan for $10,000 to help them get up and running. The Village Café will offer coffee, sandwiches, soups, salads, pastries, and snacks, and serve as a place to gather and to relax. The "primary mission [of The Village Café] is to serve and showcase products from local entrepreneurs, particularly those of underserved neighborhoods and those who are looking to gain more exposure." So in addition to offering affordable and healthy menu options, the three founders also plan to feature events that provide local creatives and entrepreneurs the opportunity to showcase their work/products and build connections, and to host workshops for the growth and exchange of ideas and "where anyone can come learn about topics such as business, personal finance, and general life skills."
In nearby NoMa you can now visit the newest Buredo outpost at 111 K Street NE in NoMa. The location has been in the works for a while, so I wasn't surprised when PoPville shared news that the sushi burrito shop had opened on June 19th. I have yet to make it to the NoMa incarnation, but I have dined at the Buredo at 625 H Street NE, and I can say there's a lot to like about this place. The menu features burrito-sized sushi rolls that can also be served in salad or bowl form. Order up a Hanzo with yellowfin tuna sashimi, avocado, cucumber, pickled fennel, arugula, tempura crunch, and lemon aioli. Sushi not your thing? Try the Crazy 88 with slow cooked pork shoulder, carrot, kimchi slaw, red onion, cucumber, corn, jalapeño, and baja sauce. Their vegan friendly option is the Pretty Riki with sweet chili organic tofu, spicy beet, carrot, jicama, arugula, and yuzu miso sauce. You can wash it down with a basil lemonade, or (at least on H Street NE) some sake.
