Local News Brief: Weekend Power Outage Leaves Local Spots in the Dark, ABRA News, Goodbye Escape Lounge

DSC_0083

It was a rough weekend for many places along the eastern end of the H Street NE Corridor with a widespread Pepco issue that hit Saturday night knocking out power to multiple blocks until late afternoon yesterday. This sounds like a great excuse to go ahead and firm up any plans (or make new ones) to dine out on H Street in the coming days.

The Escape Lounge (1322B H Street NE) closed its doors June 30th as it had previously announced it would.  New bar Idle Hands (2nd floor of 1236 H Street NE) is rolling out a Wednesday open mic night starting July 11th. The bar is looking for singers, songwriter, and bands. Sign up on their website if you are interested in performing. There's also a fair bit of local news coming our way from ABRA and the ABC Board.

The ABRA protest notice (just the application notice) is out for The Little Grand, the new tavern coming to 80 Seventh Street NE. Per the application it will be a "[n]ew Class “C” Tavern serving neighborhood craft beer, cocktails, fine wine and high-quality pizza. The Tavern will have 50 seats and a Total Occupancy Load of 90. Licensee is requesting a Sidewalk CafĂ© endorsement with 15 seats. The Licensee is requesting an Entertainment Endorsement, to include Live Entertainment inside the premises only." They've got a Roll Call Hearing set for August 27th at 10am, and the Protest Hearing date is October 24th at 1:30pm. I mentioned The Little Grand previously in a post last month. DCist has more details on plans for the new spot.

The ABC Board approved an offer in compromise that calls for 1101 Mart (1101 H Street NE) to pay a fine of $3,000 and have its license suspended for six days (July 22–27th) as a result of a December 8, 2017 sale of an alcoholic beverage to a minor (charge I) and a failure to request ID in the same incident (charge II). Four additional days of suspension have been stayed on the condition that all employees who sell alcoholic beverages complete alcohol awareness training within ninety (90) days from the date of the order (June 20, 2018). Those penalties are for charge I. Under the offer in compromise the store will only receive a warning for charge II.

Sidamo Coffee & Tea (417 H Street NE) entered into a Settlement Agreement (previously known as a Voluntary Agreement) with ANC 6C regarding the coffee shop's application for a Retailer's Class CR License.

Dangerously Delicious Pies (1339 H Street NE) received approval for a stipulated license that will cover its plans for expanded indoor and outdoor space.

Wunder Garten (1101 First Street NE) entered a new Settlement Agreement with ANC 6C.
