The National Arboretum (3501 New York Ave. NE, or 24th & R St. NE) kicks off a new program series this month called Herban Lifestyles. The series invites you to join herbal artisans and professional herbalists to explore new ways to incorporate and enjoy the benefits of herbs in your daily life. Some sessions require a fee and registration, but others are free. You can use the Arboretum's mobile app to help find your way around.
Here's what they have planned for August:

Herbal Bitters: Sweeter than You Think!  (Saturday, August 4th, 1–4pm)
The right bitters can take a cocktail to the next level, or just make your soda water a little more interesting. They can also settle your stomach and aid digestion after a meal. Learn more about these interesting concoctions and taste a variety of hand-crafted bitters.
Fee: None (free)
Registration: Not required
Location: The National Herb Garden

Herbal Salves: They’re the Balm! (Saturday, August 11th, 10am–12pm)
Learn to make herb infused oils for use in soothing salves. The healing properties of various oils and herbs will be covered, and participants will get to take home a jar of salve made in class.
Fee: $35 ($28 for FONA members)
Registration: Required
Location: Visitor Center classroom

Hot, Hot, Hot! The Secrets of Herbal Aphrodisiacs (Saturday, August 18th, 10am–12pm)
Herbalist Joan Greeley, owner of Plant Wisdom Within, will instruct participants in the creation of mojo-enhancing herbal concoctions. The weather isn’t the only thing hot this summer! Due to the mature nature of this program, registrants must be at least 18 years old.
