The non-profit the Prevention of Blindness Society of Metropolitan Washington (POB) will hold free
vision screening events for kids and adults at their facility on 233 Massachusetts Ave. NE this weekend and next week (September 16-18th). I received word via email that the group has expanded the days and hours for the kids' vision screening so that both adults and children can come during all available times. Those times are:
- Sunday, Sept. 16th, 12–5pm
- Monday, Sept. 17th, 3–7pm
- Tuesday, Sept. 18th, 3–7pm.
They will screen children (ages 3-18) for amblyopia, strabismus and distance acuity. They will have ophthalmologists on site to provide prescriptions and the Society will provide free prescription eyeglasses to children (glasses will be available for pick-up approximately two weeks after screening).
The group will also screen adults for glaucoma The District has among the highest incidence rate of glaucoma nationally. It's a silent, painless (usually) sight stealer, so it's important to learn of issues before sight is irreversibly lost. Ophthalmologists will be on site to answer questions. Anyone can develop glaucoma. Those at higher risk include:
- African Americans over age 40
- Everyone over age 60, especially Hispanics
- People with a family history of glaucoma
- Those with other health conditions, such as diabetes
233 Massachusetts Ave. NE is conveniently located near Union Station and the 96, D6, and X8 Bus routes.
