Polish Beer, Music, Food & More at Dyngus Day DC April 22

Dyngus Day is a Polish-American version of Śmigus-dyngus (pronounced SHMEE-goose-DING-goose), also known as lany poniedziałek, which means Wet Monday in Polish. The celebration marks the end of Lent, and falls on the day after Easter Sunday. Śmigus-dyngus, which has some rather obvious pagan roots, traditionally involves boys splashing or soaking girls with water, and striking them about the legs with pussy willows. The celebration that can be found in American cities like Buffalo, NY and Cleveland, OH, is quite different. In those places it's basically a big party with a parade, lots of polka dancing, and plenty of Polish food.

Since 2017 folks have also been marking the occasion right here on H Street NE at Biergarten Haus (1355 H St. NE). This year you'll find polka, Polish food - kielbasa, pierogies, pazcki (Polish doughnuts), Polish beer and dancing. Baltimore's The TKO Band will turn the party up with live music. The organizers will have pussy willows and squirt guns on-hand. There's no cover for the event. You can even snag very cool Dyngus Day DC shirts and buttons. Keep up with the latest on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
