I was at a community meeting tonight at the Joe Cole Center (Montello & Morse) and I stepped outside to make a phone call. Imagine my surprise to see a group of women waiting outside the door with a box of skates. It came out that they were, in fact, the DC Roller Girls, and they were waiting to use the gym for practice. I cannot express how odd it was to see a roller derby team at the Rec. Odd, but good. If you aren't familiar with the new DC Roller Girls (you may have heard a recent interview with some team members that aired on NPR), or if you are a fan (or just curious), this Friday is your big chance to catch them. They're having a first anniversary party (Fast Times at Roller Derby High) this Friday at the Rock & Roll Hotel (1353 H Street). $12 in advance & $15 at the door. Buy tickets online here or here. Music 8pm-11pm.
A look at what's going on in Trinidad, on H Street, and in the larger area north of Capitol Hill.
