you missed Cluck-U and taste of jamaica.

both are having a first come, first peek event. depending on the space available, lucky h street patrons will be able to peer through the storefront windows and see what they *won't* be missing this new years. there's no charge for taking photographs, and patrons are all welcome to walk away with free discarded accoutrements available on the sidewalk in front of the restaurants.

please keep on coming back for a fabulous 2008!

For what it's worth, I can confirm that Granville Moore's is doing a fixed price four-course (with dessert) menu on New Year's, and they're taking reservations. When I called, it sounded like there were slots left for the 6pm seating, but the 8pm seating was filling up quickly. Not sure of the other times. Either way, if you want to go, you'd best call soon. And yes, the price is $45. They require a credit card number to hold your slot, and they'll charge a $15 fee if you cancel less than 24 hours before (I think that's the policy..don't quote me).

Well, given my dining experiences last night, I know of at least one place on this list I would consider paying for and another I would not. Last night, a party of six of us (me, my wife, my parents, and my siblings) strolled down H Street to Granville Moore's for dinner. As luck would have it, the two tables downstairs that could accommodate six people were taken, as was the one table upstairs. These three tables, plus two more tables of two or three constituted the entire roster of customers at this point. Given the relatively empty state of the bar/restaurant, I asked Chris (the proprietor) if we could just move two unused chairs to one of the four person tables. He informed me we could not, and that our only option was to sit at the bar.

Convinced he was not interested in our business, we walked down to Napa 1015. There we were greeted by one of the owners, who gladly pushed a few tables together for us, promptly took drink orders, and supplied us all with menus. We were then treated to some of the finest dining I've experienced on this side of Capitol Hill. French Onion Soup that was as thick as a stew, filet mignon that melted on the tongue, and some shared desserts that were fantastic. Other people in our party had crab cakes, the shrimp pasta, and the vegetarian pasta, all of which were raved about.

The service was attentive, and while the price was the highest we had paid on or around the Hill in some time, we got our money's worth.

Granville's cooking is top-rate--the chef, Teddy, is a master. And the beer selection is as good as anywhere else east of the Brickskeller. But the service is for shit and has consistently been so. Our bill at Napa, before tip, was about $275.00. We clearly were out to spend a decent chunk of change on food and drink. It's a shame that Granville's didn't want any of it.

I haven't had a *terrible* service experience at Granville Moore's yet, but I agree that they need to change some of their policies. One night we were there, and out group of four went to the only table available, one that had a sign on it saying it was reserved for five guests or more. I understand the policy in general, but would they prefer to have the table to unused while customers either left or stood around for a table to clear up? The waitress was nice and told us we could stay, but she had to lie to her boss and say that we were waiting on an additional person; otherwise, he would have told us we couldn't stay there.

The food at GM's is great, and I love the beer selection, but they need to iron out a few of these customer service issues if they want to keep their patrons happy. Reservations and flexibility re: seating would be a good start.

I wonder if GM managers read this blog, because there have been numerous comments on here about their poor customer service when it comes to fair seating. Unlike Mr. Englert, there have been no responses from management. I'm thinking they may not care. Wonder how much they'll care as they lose repeat customers? Do they think they can sustain themselves on one time, non repeat customers?

Elise and all our friends on H....

We are concerned about making our neighbors and customers happy at Granville Moore's.
Therefore, starting next week, we will be having a host/hostess every Friday and Saturday night with a clipboard taking names and seating people in order of arrival for when an appropriate-sized table comes available.
We are able to take reservations of 6-8 for three of our tables at times of 5, 7 and 9 p.m. We must give away the table to the next party if the group is not there at the requested time. All other tables are open on a first come, firstserved basis.
We also can do reservations of 10 or more upstairs during the week, but cannot seat everyone at one table.
We tried to keep the seating policy more casual than this, but because of continual concerns, we are now putting these new policies into practice.
Thanks for being so supportive and we hope to see you soon. Thanks, Get, Chris, Teddy, Joe and the Staff

Hi Joe. I'm Anon 10:34 on 12/29. I hope you find this since its so far down the blog. I was not aware that you were also involved with the ownership/management of GM. I can't keep up with what you're involved in and what you're not - but nevertheless I am so thankful for all you've done for H St. With that said, I love the food and dining atmosphere of GM, but I am SO thankful that you are reading this blog and are addressing the seating situation. I think you will find many more repeat customers because of it. Thanks for trying something new. Keep up the good work!

I've been informed that the following commnet left by Joe Englert should read 5:30 pm, not 5pm. I'm not sure if that changes the other times to 7:30 and 9:30, but I would expect that to be the case. Below is his comment as it originally appeared:
