Sweet. Do they drink for free too? :)

My 10-year old nephew's been eyeing up some of the Harpoon IPA...

I'm still not sure why the Argonaut is so much less popular than Granville Moore's. Any comments?

Granville Moore's has better food and better beer. That's why, Tom.

Better ambiance, and location. (Yes, I know it's only a couple blocks difference, but GM/12th street is in the middle of the other places, and Arg is off by itself (unless you count Checkers....)

Maureen Benitz said...

I like both places, but I'm not sure that the Argo is less popular. GM is a smaller space, so it always seems crowded. The last several Fri and Sat nights when I've been at the Argo it has been very crowded. And the menu and beer selection has changed at the Argo. GM definitely has a more upscale menu, but really, if you aren't into mussels (I am not) you have very few options there.

Yeah, it's not really an apples to apples comparison so it doesn't make sense to speak about one being more popular than the other.
Look at the changes that are happening at the Argonaut...I don't think they got the cash to do that from being unpopular.

i like argonaut, but i do thing they're *just a little bit behind the times*.

you know? like they're a step behind other places in the hood.kinda like they're stuck in 2005.

i hope they survive.

Argonaut is definitely my favorite of the H. St. bars. Good bar food, beer, laid back atmosphere. I think they'll be fine.

Anonymous said...

Behind the times?!?! What is that supposed to mean? I guess I don't see how they're a step behind other places in "the hood." Perhaps if they were a check cashing place or a barber shop they'd fit in better, huh Poo Poo?

Personally, I think the Argonaut is great. The food may not be as good as Granville Moore's, but it's much better place to hang out and have a few beers with friends.

More idiot commentary from Oop oop. Shocking!

Apparently there is no subject he can't say something stupid about!

Anonymous said...

Uh, I get the impression from the homophobic posts in the USA Today thread that "poo poo" and "oop oop" are different posters. They both act like jerks, yes; but in different ways.

The Argonaut was hopping last night, as it was on my last three trips there recently.

I actually like it better than G Moores, but then I don't need the Washington Post to tell me what to like.

I'm not sure how the Argo is behind the times. I haven't done it often, and it has been a while, but I've definitely taken my laptop there, sat outside, had a beer and did some work. Aside from Sova and Sidamo, I'm unaware of the other bars offering free wireless!

Same reason the refreshing taste of Coca-Cola classic is so much more popular than the New York Yankees. Or apples are so much crisper than oranges.

BTW, my wife and I went to the Argonaut last night, and heard from one of the GMs that their new chef started yesterday. Wife says it was the best "bar food" meal she's ever had. I'd highly recommend anyone who hasn't been in a while to give it another try...

The Argonaut would like to welcome Chef Matthew Richardson. Matthew was the executive chef at Gatsbys in Alexandria and The Green Leafe Cafe in Williamsburg. We are looking to start the new menu the week of Febuary 4th. You can look forward to seasonal menus, using locally grown or organic produce, free range chicken, farm raised or line caught fish, and the meats are hormone free and vegtable or grain fed. We will have a catch of the day, and offer a late night pub menu with some of our classic sandwiches.

Oh, poo poo, I do love how you know just how to get the hilarious non-controversy controversy started.

I love the emphasis at both the Argo and GM's on local and organic stuff. (except for the wine. seriously, it's not worth it.)

It would great if our neighborhood got a reputation for local/organic places. Would give us a marketing edge, as well as being the right thing to do.

Hillman, see if you can take a break from this class of commentary.

It looks like a posse is forming to run you out of town, Poo Poo. I guess it's back to Iowa for you!

Well, that's the problem with anonymous online posting. You can either ignore the trolls and let them post ridiculous crap that non-regulars don't realizes is a troll post, or you can engage them and allow them to hijack the thread.

As for Argo, I've always taken it for what it is - primarily a bar. I do appreciate their efforts to provide really good food, though, and that effort makes it a lot more likely that I'll go there more regularly, as us older lads can't drink all night every night like we used to.

i'm just saying.

aim high, folks.

"oh, it's better than a barber shop!"

lame.

you folks need to get out more often, and settle for MORE, not less.

i hate to bring it up, but that's how U street did it. i'm not saying that h street should be another u street. but if you settle for vagaries, that's what you'll get.

i think argo could be better. apparently, you folks are over the moon because of it.

i find that interesting.

i'm not knocking it, but yes, it could be better.

maybe once they fix the starburst junction, etc., it'll find its niche.

but seriously....

i challenge anyone of you to tell me that there isn't one thing that would make it better.

c'mon...

you tell me.

what would make it better?

nothing?

god forbid.

i can tell you that the toilets DEFINITELY need some upgrades.

layout? amateurish, but obviously appealing to some.

aim high, folks. demand more.

please...

nothing wrong with criticism.

it helps "propel".

chill out folks.

take a yoga class or something.

Poo Poo, you haven't come off your throne in a few weeks and are a little bit out of sync with your kingdom.
Argo DOES now have new bathrooms.
There IS a new layout.
There IS a new chef
NOW has more bigger better beer list.
Not the QUILTED GIRAFFE but very good.
I like it especially after a haircut at the local barbershop or after a hot yoga session.
There, I said it and I feel fine.
Also, I saw many gay couples there as well......they looked welcome. AND that is GREAT

Anonymous said...

I'm gayer than Elton John in spandex cycling shorts, and I've never felt unwelcome at the Argonaut.

Anonymous said...

how did manllih know that anon @ 12:11 was hillman? i'm assuming the quote plus the reference to hillman directly means they thought (knew?) that anon 12:11 was hillman.

i'm starting to think half of you people are alter egos of one person.

Anonymous said...

Anon 12:11 was not me. I only post under the name Hillman.

Anonymous said...

Come on, Elton John in full drag is waaay more respectable than a 40 or 50-something gay man in DC, (read: out of shape and desperate) drooling over a 20 or 30 something straight man who is in the company of his wife or girlfriend. And that's a typical scene in Logan, H NE, and U NW neighborhoods.

Look 255,
I don't know what you are trying to pull here, but this really isn't the appropriate forum for that kind of crap that you posting. Personally, I have a hard time imagining that these guys you are encountering could possibly me more pathetic that a guy who's convinced that every gay guy over 40 is ogling him. Please.

Zing! Get 'em Inked!

Anonymous said...

Zing! ooh, you got me inked!

So are you like Miami Inked? Or LA Inked? or.... DC Inked (they're never going to make a show about getting "inked" in DC, 'cause it would be too lame)

What the heck is going on here? How did all of these flames wars start? And at the same time?

Anonymous said...

8th and el,

Look no further than Poo Poo and you will find your answer.

Argo will pick up once summer rolls around. Outdoor seating is prime.
