Subject: [MPD-5D] Shootings in Ward 5
Dear Neighbors,
I regret to advise you Ward 5 experienced a rough night in Trinidad. Last night there were seven shootings and a thirteen year old was killed. This is all the information I have at this time. I am certain Commander Greene, Assistant Chief Groomes, and Councilmember Thomas will be providing additional information later in the day.

At approximately 1am a black vehicle pulled into the 1200 block of 16th street ne the subjects shot two subjects at this location after they attempted to rob them.
At 0120 a subject was stabbed at mt olivet and trinidad ave. While on this scene units heard multiple gunshots. Units began to canvass the area and discovered the following:
At approximately 0130 a gold 4dr vehicle pulled into the 1300 block of holbrook street. Three black males got out of the car and attempted to rob several subjects at that location, they then shot one male subject.
At 0140 the same vehicle and suspects shot three subjects in the 1500 block of holbrook (killing one 13yr old male at that location)

The police are reporting one fatality in Trinidad.
NBC4 reports on the seven shootings that took place in Trinidad last night.
At least five of the shootings are linked. Victims were shot after attempted robberies that police have speculated might be linked to gang initiations involving recently paroled offenders returning from distant incarceration. Here is a map showing the shooting locations.

I spoke with another officer and it looks like the gang initiation thing is just a rumor circulating among officers. I think police are still figuring things out. Police don't seem to be stopping anyone right now, but there are lots of cops from all different districts and they currently have some streets blocked off.

It is sad that a 13 year old was shot however, what was a 13 year old doing out after midnight. Maybe if the police were to enforce the curfew, maybe they are I just don't see it in my area and I am sure they have more pressing issues to deal with such as the murders, car thefts, burglaries and others such incidents, maybe then only the 18 y/o and over criminals would be out shooting themselves.
I would not mind having that lock down in that area again. I think it was fantastic even though I got stopped on the way home from the Safeway, I felt much better and the police were very professional and made the process easy to deal with.
Great job MPD!
another horrific night where a beautiful child's life was cut way too short...sigh. my heart goes out to the family.
Damn!
I want to also extend my heartfelt sympathies to the family of this 13 year old. Has anyone seen them, they seem to be missing??
- Double Damn
thats so sad.
What is happening in our neighborhood and what are the police, mayor and city council doing to help stop this insanity? Going back to the comments from a few days ago-- this city is way too easy on ciminals. Clearly they have no fear of the law. Our city leaders must take a hard look at the laws of this city-- either the laws are not working or the police are not properly enforcing them. We must better fund the prosecutors office and get judges who will take these problemed people seriously. We must take back our city. Where is the leadership on this? Remember their actions in November.
my heart goes out to the family of the deceased.
oh, and f*ck you dcmpd.
this could have been avoided.
uh... roadblocks?
uh... knowing that gang members are back on the prowl?
methinks that most of dcmpd grunts would be more usefull as baggers at the local safeway.
GET. A. REAL. JOB.
Hey guys, Blogger isn't letting me edit the post right now, or create new ones, but I spoke to another officer and the gang initiation thing is starting to sound more like a rumor circulating among officers. I think they are still figuring things out. They don't appear to be stopping anyone at checkpoints yet, but they are out in the street with orange cones and lots of cops from other districts are around.
I'm also getting an unconfirmed report from a resident that the 13 year old may have been in his own yard when he was struck by a bullet.
Yeah, I have to ask what a kid that age is doing out at that time of night - rather than extend sympathies to the family, maybe they should let us know what a 7th grader is doing standing in his yard at that time of night.
if we fired the entire DC council and started over, we'd be a lot better off - we need to be tough on criminals and remove them from the area so they can't commit additional crimes or produce more kids. And, as Hillman has said in the past, all forms of public aid should be directly tied to drug testing and keeping yourself and your kids out of trouble. Fail on those counts and you don't deserve to be supported by the taxpayers.
All in all very sad - I don't think this stuff in Trinidad is going to be over until enough of these guys are dead or behind bars, regardless of what the police do.
Disappointed
The yard thing is unconfirmed. I've also heard that the kid was returning to the house with his mother and exiting the vehicle when he was killed and she was shot in the hand. There isn't a whole lot of info being released at this point.
Instead of people blaming the 13 year old kid for being outside at midnight, why don't we put blame on who truly deserves this?
When the checkpoints were in place, there was not a single crime in Trinidad. However, the bleeding heart liberals complained of racism, and violation of rights, so we had to get rid of the check points. Now, we reap what the liberals have sown. What about the rights of the 13 year old kid killed last night. I guess the rights of gang members to freely travel through the streets without being pulled over are more important.
I wonder if the parents of the 13 year old kid, still oppose the road blocks?????
Well its a was a dark day. There is trauma and a need for healing. There were crimes and there is a need for justice. There is loss, grief, fear, and bewilderment.
Let's stop the bias based talk about why a child was out with his family early in the morning.
It doesn't move us either towards healing or justice. There is a place for academic debates. And as the details are revealed, the facts of the mater will be made plain. However, let's put the knives away. Let's support one another. A child is dead. That fact would be so, not matter if he were out there with his family going in the house form a trip, or it he were out dealing drugs.
A child is dead. His life would not be worth more if he were engaged in "good" behavior, and it also would not be worth less if he were engaged in "bad" behavior.
A child is dead.
A human life has ended.
A mother is somewhere in agony
Her child is dead.
Let's not reduce this to making cheap shots on a blog.

people judging without all the facts on here might feel a little ridiculous if this 13 year old was indeed getting out of a car with his mother when he was shot, which very well could have been a late night return from the airport after a family trip or, well, anything. let's wait for more facts before we make a judgment.
