The Post reports that the District will close 23 used car lots in the city for illegal operations. Mayor Fenty says that inspections have found the lots are not actually operating as used car dealerships, but are instead merely storing cars that are being sold outside the District. In effect, they are simply parking lots and eyesores. He spoke outside Citi Motors which is located on Bladensburg Road which is home to numerous used car lots.

Cool!
Hopefully this will cut down on the numbers of assholes driving heavily rusted '89 Sentras with temporary tags, too. Oh, and taxicabs with temp tags.
Excellent news. Many of these aren't car sales lots. They are paper tag sales lots. They often exist primarily to provide 'temporary' paper tag registration options for uninsured motorists and others that don't want to register legally.
As such they greatly enable more serious crimes, as the bogus registered cars are used in criminal activities, are 'disposable' so that that the uninsured motorist can escape liability in an accident, etc.
It's high time this sham business was brought under control.
I'm a bit astonished, though, as this is actual proactive planning, something DC doesn't usually do.
Bravo!
so what happens to the car lots once they are closed down? empty space for years to come?
An empty lot is worse than these parasitic thieves? Get a grip. If the corridor is cleaned up enough, some legit businesses will move into those empty spaces. There is a lot housing that is scheduled to be built in that area. Who wants to live around those junkyards.
bladensberg looks like a war zone. i hope that enterprising new businesses buy out these eyesore car lots and bring some life to that strip...
whatever happened to the costco plans for that bladensberg/new york ave intersection? or did i just dream that?
Soul Searcher:
You and probably disagree on a lot of things, but I'm with you on the Costco.
I'd kill one of my least favorite siblings for a Costco.
Did anyone else see the shotout FT got in the Express today? One of the commenters was quoted from this post in the blog section of the Express.
What about that car lot that is in the triangle section where Florida and H come together..I have never seen anyone shopping for cars there.
Diane,
a friend of mine found an ad for one of the cars sold there on Ebay. Perhaps they are selling to distant shoppers.
