"I notice that there’s construction in the old National Liquidators building in the space formerly occupied by H [and] R Block. Wondering if you have any idea what’s going in there. Has the Ross Dress for Less spawned a retail renaissance?"
Anyone have any good info on this one?

Hopefully! While I'd love to see the entire mall demolished someday, and replaced with a mixed use site (retail on the bottom, apartments above, all properly addressing the street with parking below grade, not in giant lots in front), at least for now, let's fill it up with lively uses!
Sure wish we could get something with decent food. Subway? Chinese take-out joints? Wings and More Wings? Safeway hot bar? It's like the revitalized H Street stops at the intersection of Bladensburg. Oh, it does.
How about a DC-3, Meatballs, Young's Deli, relocate Sugar over here, open a Ben's Chili Bowl Express; I'll even settle for Flippin' Pizza!
Wishful thinking, I know, but Cameron's Seafood just doesn't do it for me.

There's also that place with a huge outdoor patio near 20th street, but I'm not sure of its name or the quality of the food.
JC Penny's
JC Penny's is going to fill the remaining building that National Wholesale Liquidators once occupied.
would LOVE a Penney's in DC. or a Kohl's.
Tom A. and IamDCDC,
It's the Roadside Cafe: http://roadside-cafe.com/
I just noticed it for the first time like two weeks ago. Looks really interesting and tryable.
Yeah, I'd really like to hear some comments from people who've eaten at Roadside Cafe.
Here's a (mostly positive) review of Roadside Cafe from Yelp:

I also heard this was going to be a JC Penny... somebody associated with the Ross buildout mentioned that it was a possibility.
JC Penny doesn't get me super excited, but it's better than nothing.
As long as, it isn't a detention center or boystown, I'm ok.
What do you have against Boystown?
Anyway, this is the most recent info I could find from the developers -- up to 30,698 square feet available for rent: http://hrretail.com/PDF%5CProperties%5CHechinger%20Mall%20Flyer%20Version%202%2003-24-11eAP.pdf
I thought it was going to be a Whole(sale) Foods.
JC Penney is probably a pretty good get for that space if it is to remain a stripmall. The options there are limited.
People want retail and JC Penney is big retail. Its a start. It's not Banana Republic or a fancy boutique, but it would appeal to a very large market and import people to the area who might not otherwise come (oh shit I need a decent article of clothing right now. oh there is a JCP not in a far out suburb??), basically anybody who isn't super-picky about their clothes.
Between the internet and JC Penney, I could fill 90% of my shopping needs
JC Penney's isn't so bad. Fun fact; their new CEO most recently ran Apple's entire retail operation. In any case, I'm all for someplace I can pick up clothing 'staples' in a pinch. Ross is okay, but it can be hit or miss. On any given day you can get a pair of jeans, but only if you don't mind dragons embroidered on the back pockets.
I asked an employee at Ross last night and she said, "either JC Penny's or a Dollar Store."
that's a huge get for our neighborhood if it's true they are moving in. while JCP isn't my cup of tea, the fact that a national chain of that stature sees a market here is a pretty big deal. it would also be the only JC Penney in the district.
please whole foods. please whole foods. please whole foods. whole. foods. please.
^^^If a Whole Foods went in here my head would explode.
Not gonna happen.
F whole foods. Excited about JCP!
Where is this place even? It must be in the ghetto part of the neighborhood I don't travel to.
Anon 8:47: please continue to not travel there. While you're at it, please don't travel to any other parts of the neighborhood either. It's best for you anyway, as they're all too dangerous. Reston is more your style. Thanks in advance.
Ooh. JCP isn't bad, but I'd prefer a Kohl's. The closest one is all the way out in Bowie.
I asked an employee at Ross last night and she said, "either JC Penny's or a Dollar Store."
Boscov's or Industrial Lead Smelter.
it won't be a JCP. there's one 20 minutes away next to wegman's and costco. dream big. dream kohl's.
@8:47,
It's across the street from my home, you clown.
Scramble off to bed and let the grownups talk.
