Help Bardo Come to Bladensburg Road

indi-gogo from bill stewartx on Vimeo.

Bardo, the massive brew pub coming to 1200-1216 Bladensburg Road, has a liquor license and is moving ahead with plans to open, but they need more money to do it. That's where you come in. They have started a campaign on indiegogo to raise money. You contribute a specified amount, and can claim one of the cool rewards they have on offer.

From the indigogo site:

Construction is slated to start in December 2012. Plans for the bar include self serve taps, 500 outdoor seats, a funky building made from shipping containers, and the biggest brewery in the DC area. Bardo Rodeo operated in the 90's as the largest brewpub in the country. The 22000 sq. ft. facility included 900 indoor & 700 outdoor seats and a 25-barrel brewhouse. As one of the first bars in the Clarendon neighborhood in Arlington VA, Bardo brewed 4000 kegs a year and enjoyed thousands of visitors each weekend. Indigogo provides the opportunity for Bardo to raise money to fund the project.

Right now the goal is to raise $110,000, but if they can raise enough money they'd also like to start distilling their own spirits. Pretty cool, no?

any time your business model necessitates this kind of public appeal, it's time to look in the mirror and learn how to recognize someone who is bad at business.

Did you read the indiegogo site? They are looking for additional start up money, and offering something in return. If you had a chance to get the money through something like indiegogo rather than taking on another partner, you wouldn't do it?

Indiegogo and sites like it are very useful for entrepreneurs at a time when it is harder to get conventional loans. Perhaps you should look into the subject a little more before you make up your mind.

Gotta say these guys sold me. I'm digging the quirky Clerks/Chasing Amy vibe they have going on.

Saying that, the key question here is that if they don't raise the funds, what happens to the money you give them?

Levi,
My guess would be that they explore other funding options. They already have the location, equipment, and license. It sounds like it's going to happen.

I LOVED Dr. Dremo's so if that was a douchey bar let's crank up the brown sandals and pull the knob off!

I read the indiegogo site, their terms, as well as the info. from the Bardo folks, and learned the following:

This is essentially a non-refundable groupon for a business that may never open, the "300k in brewing equipment" that they have was stuff left over and put into storage after the owner decided to go on some sort of vision quest, and their "distill-pub" plans are conditioned on getting D.C. law changed.

Sounds like a winner to me! SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!

As a beautiful single white woman, I think it is never a good idea to spend too much money at a bar.

Too bad Capitol City Diner didn't stick around. Business would have quintripled with this new addition to the neighborhood.

This place really intrigues me. It sounds like a shit show. One with arlington roots to make it worse. The type of thing people around here would hate. But people love it based on their past experience at bardo whatever. It must have been the best place on earth the way people talk about it. My impression is that this place was like a psychedelic brew pub concert venue and arcade. Is that accurate? It also seems like this guy was 15 years ahead of the craft brew craze and he is coming out of retirement to show us what is up. Like the craft beer world became too nerdy and cute and he wants us to start funneling double IPAs while having dizzy bat races and listening to grunge. I'm picturing PCU with craft beer. People are even wearing flannel shirts. Lets hope Nirvana 2.0 is on its way

Nobody is suggesting making this investment your retirement plan. This place sounds weird as hell but people love their previous business almost unanimously. I'll give em 50 bucks and hope for the best

I remember going there way back in the mid to late 90s. It was a huge locale that frankly had an easygoing laid back vibe. There was a metal yurt you could sit in on the second floor.

Remember that in the 90s, Arlington wasn't the yuppified playground for the affluent and douchey that it would later become. It was a fun place to go out and drink.

hey! what the hell... half price beer... and i like sitting outside ... how many places have 300 people sitting in the sun?
check out the indiegogo site... the owner of Jimmy Valentines kicked in $2000 !! he is gonna be partying hard with $4000 worth of beer!

andrew said...

Yeah, um.... startup money usually comes with equity or a promise of repayment.

Sorry, but a non-binding promise of half-price beer is just abusing the generosity of the community.

Yay, more drunks driving on Bladensburg Road!

Anonymous said...

Ah but they will be mostly young white drunks, so that makes it awesome somehow.

Yes! I look forward to this!

Distilling? We're not zoned really for that, and no I can't support that, it's highly explosive. Is this a plan to take out 16th street?

This actually looks like a shitty establishment. What if we don't want 500 over-the-hill frat guys and their pukey frat/sorority shitty friends drinking on Bladensburg Rd all night long?

11:07,
Based on everything I've heard/read, that's exactly the type of place this won't be. Did I mention that one of the owners lives down the street from Bardo?

This is less creative than the Miller Bros

I live down the street and look forward to this place opening up!
