Fishmonger by Furya

The Going Out Gurus have the scoop on the new fishmonger headed to Union Market. From the article:
[T]he District Fishwife, a 440-square-foot seafood market and cafe that will deal in sustainable fish. Lewis is expected to sell locally sourced products — rockfish, blue crabs, oysters — while working with distributors and wholesalers to find sustainably caught tuna, wild salmon and sustainably farmed barramundi. She also wants to push small, oily fish.

They will also serve some prepared foods.

Bike Parts Swap at Bardo Saturday

DSC_0014

Bardo Brewpub (1200 Bladensburg Road) is hosting a bike parts swap with Gearin' Up Bicycles this Saturday at 11am ($3 suggested donation at the door if you wish to swap). If you haven't yet checked out Bardo, do so right now. They show movies every night. They welcome kids (just not after 8pm), and your well-behaved dog is even allowed to play around off leash. Several dogs were romping and playing on a recent evening. They also have cornhole. Bardo has no kitchen at the moment (they are working on the indoor space), but you can bring food. They also have a bunch of menus from local spots that will deliver to the tavern. I ordered a pizza there the other night. They are gearing up to brew their own beers, but right now the offerings are limited to maybe 10-15 craft beers on draft.

That Patio at Sahra? It Lacks a Permit

IMG_20120708_183901
Sahra is located on the northeast corner of 12th & H

A somewhat bizarre bit of news went out on Twitter today. Apparently, local hookah lounge Sahra, doesn't have a permit for their outdoor patio. The outdoor space is very popular, particularly on weekends. I must admit to feeling a bit of shock at this news. I had simply assumed that they had a public space permit. As a result of of this issue, the patio closed immediately, and cannot be used again until they secure a permit.

Border Springs Leaves Union Market

DSC_0154

The popular vendor of lamb, and lamb sandwiches has left Union Market saying the market no longer fits the model that first attracted Border Springs. They announced the move recently on Twitter, but this Washington Post piece gives a little more context, and explains the reasons for the move. They aren't going far. They will do production work at Union Kitchen, but it doesn't sound like they will sell anything out of there directly.

Stolen Backpack

A reader writes in about a backpack that was stolen out of a car. She is right that items like this are often discarded nearby. Have you seen this backpack?

I'm a frequent reader of the Frozen Tropics blog, and thought maybe you could help me out.  My friend had his car broken into this weekend at 14th & D NE, at 10 AM on Sunday morning, and a neighbor saw them run off and called the cops.  The neighbor identified one of the thieves as wearing a blue backpack.  My friend just realized that the backpack was his, and the thieves took it from the car.  I have a feeling that the backpack was likely ditched in an alley (since it would be easy to identify them if they kept carrying it). Can you send out a note asking if anyone has seen a blue backpack with a fairly nondescript pair of white shoes in it?  They are worth a lot to my friend, but I doubt they would be to anyone else.

Scary News of Incidents in Rosedale

A frightening email from a local list describes gunshots being fired into random houses. While this sort of thing is not remotely typical, I had some friends who had something similar happen maybe 8 years ago. They lived in the northeastern portion of Trinidad. Every Saturday morning they watched a heroin deal go down at 8am. Then they had a kid. Everything was good. They hung strong. They got pregnant again. This time they had triplets. One night mom was giving the kids a bath. A stray bullet shot straight through the front of the house. It passed through the wall, and bounced off the tile in the bathroom while the babies were having their bath. The bullet came to rest in the bath water with the kids. I can't exactly blame them for decamping. If those had been my kids, I probably would have done the same.

I have another friend who owns a place on Queen Street. Several years ago a stray bullet went through the front of his house, and pierced his window A/C unit. Tough little wounded warrior it was, it kept working. I live on a busy street (plus, it's not exactly a trouble spot), and have (thankfully) never experienced anything like this.

So, what do you think about this email, and what has happened here? How would you react? Also, I think this goes without saying, but be sure to give MPD a ring if you find fresh bullet holes anywhere on your property.

MPD Makes Major Burglary Arrest in Trinidad

Typical Trinidad

Our area has seen a significant number of home burglaries recently, and many of them appear to be the work of a small number of individuals. Thanks to alert neighbors, one man was arrested recently in the 1400 block of Morse (he was arrested while committing a burglary). MPD has now made an additional arrest, and they are saying it is a big one.

One thing they note in the press release is that they believe this person invaded other homes, or attempted to do so. But they think that these burglaries, attempted burglaries, or break-ins in which nothing was taken, may not have been reported.  If you were a victim of such an event, please get in touch with MPD. If you know of a neighbor who may have been a victim, please urge that person to reach out to MPD. Only by reporting all of these crimes (all of which would certainly be reported in upper NW) can we get the police attention that we deserve.

MPD's press release appears below:

TRINIDAD COMMUNITY ALERT: A Significant Arrest has been made in a number of Burglary Cases within our Trinidad Community

The Fifth Police District has made a significant arrest of an individual involved in a series of Home Break ins that occurred in and around our Trinidad community.
