Low Key Weekend Options for Your Calendar

The National Arboretum hosts a Chile Festival 10/14

It's the end of September, meaning you've survived both the H Street Festival and our local Art All Night events. Maybe you still feel like going out, but are in the mood for something a little more low key. Not a problem. Here are a few very solid local options.

Clue the Movie Under the Stars (9/29)

Clue hit the theaters way back in 1985, but the somewhat ridiculous mystery comedy is still a fun watch. Starring Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, and more, Clue brought the familiar board game to life in a 1954 mansion. If you've seen the movie on Netflix, tv, dvd, or even a VHS tape (back in the day), you will be familiar with the movie's three endings. Did you know that when Clue first played in theaters audiences would have seen only one of the three possible endings?

You can catch Clue this Friday at Union Market's Drive-In (1309 Fifth Street NE). Tickets are $10 per car, and admission is free for walk-ups. This movie is rated PG, and has a run time of 94 minutes. The lot opens at 5:30 pm, and closes promptly at 6:40 pm. Film begins 7:15 pm.

Just a heads up, you can catch the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (not to be confused with 2005's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) there on Friday, November 3rd.

Toki/Chaia Veggie Taco Mash-Up (10/1)

Toki Underground (2nd floor of 1234 H Street NE) is teaming up with Chaia for a veggie taco Chaia/Toki mash-up on Sunday, October 1st. They'll be serving three varieties of taco ($3.75 each or the trio for $11). Varieties include:
  • fermented black bean, queso fresco and rice taco
  • sweet potato, kale and kimchi creme fraiche taco
  • fried enoki with tarragon and ginger-lime yoghurt taco
They'll also offer celery root slaw, root vegetable broth and coconut arroz con leche with date caramel.

It's first come, first served, but they will do takeout. 11:30 am to 2:30 pm.

Feel the Heat with a Chile Celebration at the National Arboretum (10/14)

Temperatures have been known to take a plunge in the month of October, but one good way to keep your internal fire burning might be a visit to the Chile Celebration at the National Herb Garden at the Arboretum. Turn out for this free event, presented by members of the Herb Society of America, to sample chile-based foods, taste test some hot peppers, learn about the use and cultivation of peppers, and watch live demonstrations. This is your chance to explore more than 60 varieties of peppers, some of them fiery hot. 1–4 pm Saturday, October 14th.
