The Atlas in 2016
Exactly 80 years ago today the brand new Atlas Theater first debuted on H Street NE. The feature attraction at that grand opening celebration was the 1938 film Love Finds Andy Hardy. The price of admission was 25¢ for adults and 15¢ for children.
Text from an announcement in The Evening Star on opening day:
[W]e want to impress upon you that it is truly modern from every standpoint. Thoroughly and healthfully air conditioned, beautifully decorated, and the latest and best motion picture projection and sound equipment. Comfortably spaced seats with good vision from any seat in the theater.
The New ATLAS will be provided with every modern facility, including soundproof nursery for mothers and babies where they can sit to themselves and watch the show.
The Atlas operated as a movie theater for many years before shuttering as the H Street NE Corridor fell into neglect during the post-riot years. For more than thirty years the building sat vacant. It reopened as the Atlas Performing Arts Center (1333 H St. NE) we know and love today in 2006.

The Atlas will hold its annual Destination Atlas Gala fundraiser Thursday, October 4th (7pm). The event is described as an "Art Deco + Gogo Dance Party" with festive attire, and food and drink. The evening's entertainment will include the District's own The JoGo Project, and cellist virtuoso, Benjamin Gates. Dance late into the night with DJs from A-Squad Entertainment. Tickets for individuals start at $275, with sponsorship packages $500–$25,000.

Anyone have any picture of the atlas B.R. before riots?
Soundproof nursery for mothers and babies sounds like an amazing idea. They should bring that back!
