Cusbah Starts Construction on New Covered Patio

Patio at Cusbah

It's still only in the early stages, but here's a picture I snapped on my way to catch the X2 this morning. This should be great for Cusbah (1128 H Street), and ready well before the warm weather arrives. This looks like the sort of set-up where one could easily enclose the patio during the cooler months.

HSGS: Mythology & Lore Coming to 816 H Street

Sorry about the old photo, but 816 is the 5th  building in from the end (in between
King's Beauty Supply & Best Electronics).

H Street Great Street has details on a change of planned location for the steakhouse Mythology & Lore. The restaurant had been slated to go in at 1005 H Street (the old Willpower space), but is now headed to 816 H Street (previously home to both & HR-57, & Fever). Follow the link for full details.

Door Smashed at Rita's

I'm not sure when this occurred, but a reader sent in this photo of what appears to be an intentionally smashed glass door at Rita's (1014 H Street). I believe they were still closed for the off season, but they typically reopen around the beginning of March (I see 2/28 listed on their website).

Thanks to Dave Stroup for the heads up. I spoke briefly to the firefighters, and they said there were no injuries, and that no one was home when the fire broke out.

@HStreetDC_: XII Liquor License Saga Continues

H Street 362

@HStreetDC_ reports that XII (1123 H Street) failed to send a representative to an ABRA roll call vote, and ABRA refused to let it go. It sounds like they must start from scratch with the application process. This is not great news for an operating club/bar/restaurant. That's particularly the case when you consider that XII doesn't exactly have a warm & fuzzy relationship with some of its neighbors. Their website lists some events happening this week, and they remain fully open. I'm told that XII can continue to serve alcoholic beverages while seeking a whole new license (or possibly a renewal license).

Lost Dog Seeks Owner(s)

DSC_0765
I was drawn to my back door (1200 block of Florida Ave) by whining and scratching around 9pm tonight. It was a smallish male pitbull, black with a white patch on his chest. He was very friendly, but also very scared. As I have a cat, I was unable to keep him overnight. A friend who works for the Washington Humane Society got him on a leash, and called two kind folks she knows from Animal Control. He's safe, and staying at the shelter. He looked healthy, & clean. I don't think he had been outside long. He was not wearing a collar. I think he was neutered.

Union Kitchen Adds to Culinary Production Scene in Ivy City

361223pr
Photo from the Library of Congress

In a bit of truly awesome news for both aspiring small food businesses in the District, and also for Ivy City, the small culinary business incubator Union Kitchen  (1110 Congress St, near 2nd & L) has announced plans to expand to Ivy City.  Ivy City, an area that is primarily industrial (but with some residential), has gotten a bit of attention recently. It is home to New Columbia Distillers (1832 Fenwick St.), who produce the popular (and tasty) Green Hat Gin that you can find in many local restaurants, bars, and liquor stores (usually it runs about $35 a bottle, but Brother's Liquor at Montello & Florida sells it for $30). Douglas Development recently launched their redevelopment of the historic Hecht Company Warehouse property located at 1401 New York Avenue. The building is a fabulous modern style structure that is quite impressive when you first view it. This project should bring 300 new residences to the space, and provide retail space as well. A major anchor tenant is a Mom's Organic Market. Planet Fitness has also signed on to provide a gym.

A Look at What's Coming to 501 H Street

photo_1

A reader write in with some information (slightly edited) on the new development that will replace the H Street Community Development Corporation's  (HSCDC) headquarters at 501 H Street.

Went to the ANC meeting last night. Douglas Development was there to discuss their plans. 3 floors of retail (1 of which would be underground). Apartments/condos on top. 32 Total units? No parking. Possibly a zipcar spot. Studios - 2 bedrooms. Earliest they would break ground would be February 2016, but this is not likely they said. Will be later.

District Fishwife Opens Friday at 11am

The long awaited District Fishwife opens this Friday (11am-8pm) at Union Market (1309 5th Street). Though their indiegogo campaign has come and gone, you can still use it to learn more about this sustainable seafood shop, that will also serve drinks and prepared foods..

Halftime Sports Bar Headed to 1427 H Street

P1010012

A new sports bar is coming to the space formerly occupied by Daavi's West African Restaurant, which closed in 2006, and has remained vacant ever since.

After years of no official sports bar on H Street, we actually have two in the works.  Sin Bin (a nickname for the penalty box in hockey) is coming to 1336 H Street. Sin Bin, with its total occupancy load of 400, is much larger than Halftime, but I bet we can accommodate two sports bars as long as they offer different experiences. Did you know we were originally slated to have a sports bar called the Olympic as one of the original Joe Englert associated bars?

+++++++++++++
UPDATE
+++++++++++++

According to an email sent out on the listserv overnight, there are actually three new sports bars headed to the 1300 & 1400 blocks. The third, which doesn't yet have a name, is supposed to go into the long vacant Micky's space at 1362 H Street. Three sports bars within a block of each other does seem like a lot. Thoughts?

PoPville: Mike's Thrift Store to Close When Building Leases

CAM00705

PoPville reports that the building housing Mike's Thrift Store (1425 H Street) is for lease, and the shop will close when the building is leased. For those who have never shopped there, Mike's offers a variety of clothing & goods. At one point they sold nearly ever item for a dollar (buy a pair of shoes for $2). I've actually made some cool finds at Mike's. I am not entirely sure if they are still there (I haven't visited in a while), but there were actually multiple other small shops upstairs.

Did You Lose Your Keys Near 6th & L?

A reader writes in looking for the owner of a lost set of keys (inlcuding a key to a Honda).
[S]omeone hung a set of keys on my gate today. I'm sure the owner is frantic to find them because the key ring has car, house and some other keys attached.
