I haven't heard any official estimate of the people for yesterday's festival. I know that we had about 15,000 people turn out for the 2009 festival. So what are your guesses for this year's turnout?
A look at what's going on in Trinidad, on H Street, and in the larger area north of Capitol Hill.

The Scene at Argo Tonight
I love walking into a bar/restaurant and immediately randomly seeing 10+ people I know from the neighborhood. The Argo will have a stand selling giant fish tacos at the Festival tomorrow, but they will also be open at 1433 H Street with Fat Face Bar-B-Q serving up some tasty fare. So, on the eve of the H Street Festival, here's to the Argonaut, a true neighborhood tavern that not even a fire could keep down.
A Viable Streetcar Alternative?

Weekend Arts Round-Up
The following is a slightly edited cross post from East City Art. It was written by Phil Hutinet.
Saturday September 18
Gallery OonH starts off the day during the H Street Festival with “Art Cars” and “The Way We Move”. For a complete schedule of Gallery OonH’s events, click here.
During the festival, CITY Gallery will be open from 12pm to 6pm where "Night Goat and Other Flights of Fancy" will be on display. Artist Ellen Cornett will be in attendance.
When the Festival winds down, say you were among the first to see Camille Schefter’s work as she opens “Insoluble” at Studio H from 6pm to 9pm.

A Useful New H Street Site
It's called H Street Guide, and it's a super useful site that allows H Street businesses to put their nightly events up on one place. Looking to go out next Tuesday?

Wow, lots of fun stuff happening. Click on an individual event for details (on the site, not here). Honestly, seeing it all in one place is kind of cool. Some places have yet to get with the program on this one, but I expect a large buy-in for the site. It's pretty simple on the reader side, and I suspect the same is true for listing businesses. We'll see. I, for one, will keep reading.

Celebrate Oktoberfest on H Street
Q: What's special about this Saturday?
A: The H Street Festival.
Q: And?
A: Umm. Oh, it's also the first day of Oktoberfest!

Biergarten Haus, for all your Bavarian needs
Yes, so a visit to the Biergarten Haus is surely in the cards for many. But if the World Cup lines were any indication, the place might be packed. Luckily we have plenty of bars on H Street where you can celebrate the occasion. And I'm pretty sure sure this the perfect excuse to extend the party even after the Festival wraps up.

Arboretum Place is Now The Flats at Atlas District
Earlier today I linked to a DCmud post on Arboretum Place. The post was based upon a press release that I apparently I got, but never read because I missed it. So here's the post I should have written two weeks ago:

As I mentioned recently, Clark Construction has broken ground on its new project The Flats at Atlas District. The project was previously called Arboretum place. It's going in at the old Sears site (behind Hechinger Mall). The site is bounded by Maryland Avenue, Neal Street, Bladensburg Road, K Street and 17th Street.

This is phase one of a larger project on the site. Phase one includes the following:
-257 luxury apartment units of various sizes;
-5,000 square feet of first floor retail space;
-a 250 space parking garage.
Future residents can look forward to amenities like a fitness center, a pool, a great room with kitchen, an indoor half-basketball court, a meditation courtyard, and a year round outdoor lounge with a fireplace. The view's not bad either. If you stand on that hill you can actually see the Capitol.
That 5,000 sq ft of retail could go to one tenant, or multiple smaller ones. Apparently, someone (possibly with the initials K.H.) asked for a grocery store in the space. That's not happening, but residents can still shop at either of the two grocery stores located directly across the street.
The units themselves will vary in size and pricing. Some will be more luxurious than other, with Clark planning to finish the highest end ones with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances. Lower priced units might sport laminate countertops and black appliances.
The first residents should move in sometime in 2012, which is allegedly about the time the streetcars will be up and running. This is a big project, and the first of this scale to come to the east end of the Corridor.

East City Art: Totem Pole Raising
East City Art has more info on the Totem Poles coming to the 300 block of H Street. The totem poles, created by artist Wilfredo Valladares, reflect elements of live in the District. Only four of the poles will actually be raised at the ceremony, the rest coming later. A shaman will be present to bless the totem poles. So take a break from the festival and walk the few block. Maybe stop by Toyland for a drink, and then head over 408a H Street for the opening of Camille Schefter's "Insoluable" at Studio H. The opening runs from 6-9pm.
DCmud: Arboretum Place Gets Under Way
DCmud reports more details about Arboretum place, the new mixed use apartment building going in on the vacant lot behind Hechinger Mall. The essential details:
"the $36 million development will deliver 257 apartments, a 250 space parking garage, and 5,000 s.f. ground-floor retail."
If 257 seems like a smaller number that you remember that's because this is phase one of the project. The first residential units should come online in 2012.

Festival 2010: Toki Underground Offerings
Reason number 5, 326 to attend Saturday's H Street Festival: sample food from the not yet opened Toki Underground. Toki Underground is set to open up above the Pug sometime in October. But you don't have to wait until to check out some of the offerings. Here's what they'll have for the Festival:
Toki Underground Beef Dumpling
Toki Underground Veggie Dumpling
Pho Dog
Tofu Pho Dog
Two Whole Pigs served with our house made Kimchi.
Flying Dog Draft Beers
Taiwanese Shaved Ice specials too.
Uh, what's a pho dog? Why not let the City Paper help you out?
Jesse Ventura Dines at Capital City Diner
Jesse "The Body" Ventura, former Governor of Minnesota and former pro-wrestler, stopped by the Capital City Diner last night for a bite. No word on what he ordered. I'm told he also walked around a bit and talked to neighbors.

Cooking the Florida Market: Rice Noodle Rolls Edition
Yesterday I recreated a truly great version of some shrimp rice noodle rolls that I had at dim sum seven years. While that in itself was exciting enough for me, the cool thing is that I did it entirely with ingredients that you can buy at the Florida Market. Actually, I was inspired jointly by a recent dim sum craving, and a trip to the Market that unexpectedly included a stop by the storefront (by which I mean that there literally is no store, just a front) where they make and sell fresh rice noodles by the sheet. 70 cents a sheet, which weighs slightly under a pound. I went with a friend and we each bought two sheets. Steam them, fry them, cut them up into any shape you like. You get the picture. And seriously...70 cents. Other stuff I put in my shrimp rice roll:
1. shrimp;
2. scallions;
3. ginger;
4. flat leaf parsley;
5. soy sauce;
6. oyster sauce;
7. sweet chili sauce (I was hungry, and thus too lazy to make sweet soy sauce).
Not the most authentic version, but tasty none the less. I also noticed that MS3000 (which is owned by the same parent company as H Mart) sells packs of spring roll/egg roll wraps (300 block of Morse). I'm thinking you could also use them for wontons, or perhaps even some lovely kim chee dumplings. Hmm...
I'm Telling You, The Internet LOVES H Street
Frozen Tropics Flickr pool user Madam Meow documents the Blogger Breakfast at Biergarten Haus
1. The self described "foodie ninja" over at Strawberry Basil checks out Sticky Rice.
2. TBD looks at ANC 6A's challenge to the local 7-11, as does Housing Complex, and blogger Matthew Yglesias.
3. Biergarten Haus wins a fan in the Cat in the Cap.
4. Every Bar in DC hits up the H Street Country Club.
5. TBD and others are eager to check out the consolidated Red Palace.
6. We also have a read worthy (I'm part way through its 48 pages now) dissertation thingy from a guy named Peter Dunn who wrote it for his Masters program at the London School of Economics. It's called: Situating a New Main Street: The Space and Scope of H Street's Commercial Development.
7. And pretty much everyone is talking about the H Street Festival on Saturday. You're going, right? 12-6pm.
