Giving Thanks For the Festival

A similar thank you also appears my monthly H Street Life column in the Hillrag, but I wanted to post one here as well. Lot's of people worked very hard on the Festival, and here are a few of their names:
Margaret Holwill (she was my main contact for info),
Steve Hessler and Dolly Vehlow (they own a soon to open art gallery in the 1300 block of H Street, and were instrumental in securing the art cars, the speed chess, and artists who exhibited work along the Corridor).
Anwar Saleem (of H Street Main Street)
Joe Englert (of local bar fame)
Leonard Howell (a local resident who works in commercial real estate).
And countless others who volunteered long hours to make this year's Festival the best yet.

And here is a special thank you note from Joe Englert:
Sure, the restaurants and bars on H are key.  But the thing that really made the H Street Festival great this year, was the art and fun events.

The art cars were spectacular. This was due to Steve Hessler and Dolly Vehlow (owners of Gallery O) making the connection and following through with the Art Car folks. They also coordinated processions with the cars throughout town, creating a lot of buzz and excitement. Last but not least, they treated the Art Car owners like royalty, throwing a party and catering for the crew the entire weekend.

Steve and Dolly were also key in recruiting Margaret Holwill to coordinate the festival. Margaret delivered with creative events like the hair show, tattoo contest and also brought on higher quality food stands.

Without things like the Art Cars and double dutch events, the H Street Festival Could become stale and predicatable. I think Steve and Dolly will keep
that from happening and in that I am secure.

   Vive la difference!

Considering Rosedale?

The Rosedale Citizen's Alliance fields questions from a potential neighbor about life in the neighborhood.

Skeeball @the Country Club

I received the following note from H Street Country Club. Skeeball fans rejoice!

We'll be starting a skeeball league. The DC Amateur Skeeball League will host games at H Street Country Club starting this Sunday at 6pm. We'll have 1-on-1 tournaments every Sunday. Players who sign up will compete for prices and get discounts on drinks. Should be lots of fun and a great opportunity for neighbors to meet.

Also, we will sponsor a full skeeball season this winter. We are now signing up teams of 5 to compete during a 6-week season. The season will culminate with a one-day playoff and championship tournament. If anyone is interested in playing during the season (or just Sundays), they can contact me at
caddy@thehstreetcountryclub.com to sign up.

Fundraising for Wheatley's After Care Program

It's time again for the annual Wheatley Aftercare Program fundraiser. This is a really great opportunity to meet neighbors while donating money that will go directly to the program with absolutely no wasted overhead in the process. Here's more info:

Wheatley Education Campus in the Trinidad neighborhood of NE Washington, DC receives $1000 a year from the district to fund their After Care Program, directed by Catrice Simpson. This program provides more than 200 area children positive and productive activities after classes. In 2007, Jimmy Valentine's Lonely Hearts Club gave $500 to this program, and in 2008 they led a fundraiser that raised over $3000. This year we invite you to help increase the contribution. Your donation will directly support keeping our local kids off the streets and focused on a brighter future.

Please join us on Thursday, October 8th, from 6 PM to 9PM for a Webb Elementary After School Program fundraiser at Jimmy Valentine's Lonely Hearts Club, located at 1103 Bladensburg Rd NE. We are proud to have Ward 5 Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr. join us at the event. Along with free food, Jimmy Valentine's will provide free drink (limit 3 alcoholic drinks per person), and James Pittman from Councilmember Thomas’ office will DJ the event. 100% of your $20 donation will provide items such as art supplies and athletic gear so the children participating in the After School Program have access to the teaching and learning tools needed to better their lives. Last year Catrice was able to purchase an adaptation of The Wizard of OZ into a children’s play, which the children performed last winter. This year she is purchasing all the necessary supplies for the kids to make their own yearbook.

Many people talk about improving our community and many more talk about what should be done. Here is a simple and straightforward opportunity to make direct impact. A mere 50 persons can match the yearly budget, and 100 can double it. The list of people below have already committed their time and efforts to this fundraiser and would be thrilled to have you join them for this special event. All you have to do is stop by and enjoy some time, food, and music with your neighbors. If you would like to make a contribution but are unable to attend, simply click the link immediately below and send a donation via Paypal to non-profit corporation Trinidad Association (FEIN #80-0299958). Together we will succeed in making our community a better place.

Day of the Dead on H Street

Halloween is my all time favorite holiday, and I've often said we need to celebrate it on H Street. My upcoming column in the Hillrag mentions a few events, but I have also since received the following email from one of the organizers of the H Street Festival:

Lots of rock musicians died before their time so we'll honor them. Michael Jackson of course. Is Elvis dead or not?
Traditionally, people paid tribute to the departed with great food and drink, and that's something that we do well on H. The restaurants will offer special menus, many of them Mexican or New Orleans, a city that celebrates the Day of All Saints each year.
As always, the food will range from bar snacks to elegant repasts from H Street's good cooks! Autumn's new beers are in, ready to be enjoyed.

We're starting early in the week so that people will have an opportunity to leave mementos at the shrines to the famous departed that inspire H Street's food, music and commerce. They'll dot nooks and crannies along the street as temporary altars.

Dia de los Muertos and the Feast of All Saints, or some variation of festivals honoring ancestors, are celebrated across the world and in virtually every culture. Come enjoy the excitement and fun of H Street while taking your hum-drum Halloween to a new level of enjoyment. Make sure to wear a costume so you'll blend in with the other revelers.
We're waiting for you - and so are the ghosts of the past.

Sounds pretty cool to me.

Human Hand on Bladensburg Road?

An odd message greeted me when I finally checked my email again. I have no other information, but here's the email:

Date: Wed, Sep 23, 2009 at 3:23 PM
Subject: Human remains found at 1058-1062 Bladensburg Rd NE?
To: mpd-5d
Cc: "Groomes, Diane (MPD)"

CO Greene,

I just received a call from my partner at the diner, who was talking with a representative for the Hyacinth Place project at 1058-1062 Bladensburg Road NE. The project's representative, in casual conversation, mentioned that they discovered what appeared to be remains from a human hand while digging footers for their foundation recently.

According to this representative, they stopped construction and called Metropolitan Police upon finding the bones and a handgun with them. He alleged that responding MPD officers did not thoroughly investigate the finding, writing the remains off as animal bones even though the
"hand" was found buried with a partially-deteriorated handgun. According to him, no excavation occurred to attempt to locate other parts of the remains even though the "hand" was near the edge of the excavated hole. This account is consistent with street rumors that have been circulating recently, but this is the only first-hand information I've heard of.

Can you provide additional information and/or clarification on MPD's response to this? What steps were taken to determine if the remains were human or not? Was the handgun (with a partially-deteriorated wooden handle) recovered by MPD? Was a report taken?

While I don't have further information or a specific date for this find, it was likely within the past couple months, as I recall that being the time they excavated initially for footer construction.

Thanks,

Matt

**************************
UPDATE
**************************
I don't have a copy, but MPD reportedly sent an off list email saying the bones were confirmed as animal bones. It isn't uncommon at all for animal bones to be mistaken for human bones. This was the outcome I expected in this instance. It was just that I couldn't resist posting the email. Also, at least we get to kill that urban legend early on.

Bones from a bear's paws, for instance, are commonly mistaken for the bones of a human hand.  I'm glad MPD is checking this stuff. If we start confusing chicken bones for human bones we'll have a lot of talk of serial killers out there.

NYP: 10 Reasons to Hit DC

Sidamo Cafe...er, Coffee

The New York Post thinks H Street is one of ten great reasons for New Yorkers to visit DC this fall. Two small typos that jumped out at me:
1. Sidamo Coffee, not cafe (people do this all the time)
2. Palace of Wonders is located at 1210 H Street. I think 210 would put you somewhere in the middle of the Hopscotch Bridge.

And a reporter from NBC4 makes fun of the above mentioned piece, but then repeats the Sidamo Cafe mistake (see, ALL THE TIME!).

Partial Liquor License Ban on Bladensburg

And former ANC Kathy Henderson's proposed ban on liquor licenses for non-chain restaurants gets coverage from We Love DC. I'll see about getting more info on her reported opposition to a diner opening on the same street.

Festival Color & 2 Notes

IMG_5899
You can find my other 122 Festival photos in my Flickr stream.

Please bear with me if you have sent me an email re: a posting. I've got a backlog right now (very busy weekend) and I'm starting a multi-week temp thing tomorrow that will have me doing actual "work" work 12 hours per day. That will likely mean night postings, and that if you want something posted you will need to give me plenty of notice.

It sounds like everyone enjoyed the Festival. That's terrific. A huge amount of work went into pulling this off. I also need to mention, and I hope to elaborate later (but I have some time constraints), that the entire festival almost didn't happen due to one local resident. His name is Bobby Pittman. It's pretty rare that I call someone out by name on Frozen Tropics, but I feel that this is a special case (and Bobby has made himself into a bit of a public figure, at least hyper-locally). I'll also state that I would never ever post something like this if I didn't have personal knowledge of the stuff Bobby regularly pulls (plus, I know him).

Here's what I know right now:
The day prior to the Festival Bobby calls up the Mayor's office and says he wants to review the signatures submitted to get the permit because he doesn't think they had enough. For a few hours there it actually looked like Bobby Pittman (a well known local gadfly) might be able to stop the Festival through last minute bureaucratic tie ups (NB, noting is wrong with checking signatures, but this was a dirty Bobby move at the last minute). In the end Bobby did not get his way, and the Mayor's office allowed the Festival to proceed. But I'd like to send out a personal Evil Eye to Bobby on this one.  If you really hate seeing all this great stuff on H Street, maybe you should just move dude. Bobby, you have gone on some Don Quixotesque crusade of harassing local businesses (including, but not even close to limited to: Rock and Roll Hotel, the Pug, and the Atlas Performing Arts Center [!]). Aside from the one time I saw you planting flowers on H Street, acting as the PSA 102 Coordinator, and a few other very isolated incidents, I've yet to see you do anything to positively contribute to life on the H Street Corridor, or on Linden. It's one thing to want the laws enforced, and to want good neighbors (both admirable qualities and pursuits). But what you are doing is unacceptable in my opinion, and I hope that others who agree will tell you so to your face. I certainly intend to do so the next time I see you. Until then, Evil Eye to you Pittman.

I have multiple people willing to go on record about Bobby's actions regarding the Festival. Some had previously approached me about his past acts, but I was reluctant to publicly indict him. I don't feel that way now.  People deserve to know the truth about Bobby Pittman, and why he should NEVERr be appointed, or elected to any position in our neighborhood as long as he continues on this path. I'm sorry to sound unusually harsh, but I want everyone (both new and old) to know what this guy has been doing behind the scenes. For the record, Bobby has never wronged, opposed, or spoken out against me personally. I'm just tired of constantly hearing about the junk he pulls on the businesses and people who make up our community. His shit (or at least him not getting publicly called out on it) ends NOW.

HSCC Adds Noted Mixologist to Team

IMG_5646
Cool news (press release):

H Street Country Club MIXES IT UP WITH GINA CHERSEVANI

Updated Beverage Program Launched by Nationally Recognized Mixologist

Washington, DC - After an extraordinary reception by Washingtonians this summer, The H Street Country Club will be shaking things up this fall with the support of Master Mixologist, Gina Chersevani. The bar will feature an updated beverage program that includes inventive creations by Chersevani, whose artistic cocktails have been highlighted in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The Washington Post.

Chersevani has become a nationally recognized talent with strong roots in the Washington, DC area. Her career includes leading roles at Rasika and Smith's PS7's Restaurant where inspired drinks landed her on the cover of The Beverage Journal's "10 Mixologists to Watch" for 2008 and catapulted her to the top of her profession. Chersevani's consulting engagement with H Street Country Club displays her gift of blending ingenious beverages that masterfully complement the uniqueness of the space and the food.

"We wanted to work with Gina since the conception of H Street Country Club, but timing didn't work out until now. We are excited about her creations and can't wait to share her remarkable cocktails with everyone", said owner Blair Zervos.

One of the most innovative concepts in Washington, H Street Country Club lays claim to the only miniature golf course in the city serving food created by celebrated, James Beard-Award winner Chef Ann Cashion and offers an already extensive and renowned cocktail menu. With the addition of Chersevani's creative force behind the beverage program, H Street Country Club looks to establish itself as one of DC's best options for food, drink and fun.

The H Street Country Club is open daily from 5:00 p.m. - 2:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 5:00 p.m. - 3:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. The restaurant is located at 1335 H Street NE, Washington D.C. Walk-ins are welcome. To contact the restaurant, please call 202-399-HSCC (4722). Girls Stab Subway Employee @8th & H

Apparently they got upset when the employee told them they couldn't eat McDonald's food at Subway. No word on the employee's status. He was stabbed in the abdomen. The girls tossed the knife as they left the scene so I'd assume we might be able to get a print match when and if they are caught. Super classy.

H Street Festival in the Media

Daily Candy recommends the Festival on Saturday, and NBC joins the party saying "What Recession? H Street [is] Ready to Party." 12pm-6pm THIS Saturday. DON'T MISS IT.

Brought to You By the Letter "H"

I lack a photos, but DC Greenworks has installed some pretty cool looking planters along the strip that are brightly colored and shaped like the letter H. The downside, some of the plants apparently aren't faring too well. Let's hope H Street businesses clue in and give them a watering.

MPD in the Area

I'm getting reports of police activity last night. One email about helicopters circling H Street, and a series of, as yet, unexplained text messages about cops swarming Kent Place (it sounds like they may have apprehended an armed suspect, but that's based on cryptic text messages, i.e. take it with a grain of salt). Hopefully an update will follow. Kent is a single block street between 9th and 10th one block south of Florida.

The Permanent Coupon

I was chatting with Paul Roe of British Ink (2nd floor 508 H Street) today and he happened to mention that the soon to open H Street location of Dangerously Delicious Pies (1339 H Street) is planning to offer a permanent discount to anyone who has the Dangerously Delicious logo tattooed on his/her body. It might sound a little odd, but it reminded me that I had recently noticed the Sticky Rice logo (no words, just the logo) tattooed on a woman's arm. Because I didn't recognize her as having an official connection with Sticky Rice (1224 H Street) DC I asked her about the tattoo, and she told me that because of the tattoo the restaurant gives her a discount every time she visits. For those to lazy to click through to the Dangerously Delicious site I'll just tell you it's a pie with cross bones. Not a bad looking tattoo.
