Found Dog

photo
A reader writes in with news of a dog he found. Can you help the dog get back to his home? If so, email me at elise.bernard[at]gmail.com and I will put you in touch with the guy who has him.

A group effort tracked him down on Capitol Hill as he was crossing streets. He's a cute little male dog, not neutered, and has a chain collar with no tags. photo-1

H Street Playhouse Has a New Home

P1010015_3
H Street Playhouse has finally released the info on its new home. An early artistic component on H Street, and an all around neighborhood staple, the H Street Playhouse's lease expires early next year (rent is too high to renew), and their has been much speculation over their search for a future home. They are moving across the river. I haven't heard an exact location. Remember that you can still catch shows there for the next several months.

Wondering what will become of 1365 H Street after the Playhouse relocates? Here's how it's being advertised: "Great space for night club or restaurant with entertainment! Building features high ceilings with no columns and a roof top available on H Street's best block."

Alan Page: What H Street Means to Me

P1010054_7
A sign on Wylie Street warns off those seeking to buy drugs in the Spring of 2005

I have lived just off the H Street corridor since the beginning of 2003. I was the first gentrifier on the block, so to speak. A black lawyer, with a pregnant fiancee, I often found I was the lone fellow on the block heading off to work in a dress shirt and khakis in the morning (as vivid a sign of the unemployment problem facing the neighborhood as any).

When my fiancee told me she was pregnant, we were living in an efficiency in NW. For us, raising a family in an efficiency was out (kudos to whoever pulls it off), so we started looking for a new place. Rents in NW were already high enough for me to decide to pursue purchasing a house, especially looking at the reasonably low interest rates of that time. A lot of other people must have had the same idea, because we got outbidded on every house we tried to buy in NW.

So, we expanded our search to other areas of the city. We chose Wylie Street because it was affordable.  So, we got the joyous experience of moving into a very community oriented, friendly neighborhood, although admittedly there was enough drug traffic to justify the sign at the 13th Street entrance to the one way block warning "automobiles that come onto this block to purchase drugs may be seized" (this sign was subsequently removed when the block improved; the old school hand-to-hand drug sales prevalent on the block nine years ago are now completely gone).

Atlantic Cities: Stop Talking About Bus Stigma

IMG_0953
Here's a response to the Atlantic Cities bus stigma article that I posted here last week.

Men's Fashion Warehouse to Close 10/31

Fate of a Salesman: TRAILER from Eidolon Films on Vimeo.

Prince of Petworth reports that Men's Fashion Warehouse will permanently close its doors on Halloween. Earlier this year some readers attended a documentary about the store, its owner, and its employees. The documentary is still a work in progress, but the reviews I read were positive. Hopefully we'll be able to see the full version on H Street sometime soon. Here's a description of the film from Eidolon Films' website:

Fate of a Salesman is an intimate portrait of a way of life on the verge of disappearing. In its 60th year of business, Men’s Fashion Center in Washington, DC has come to represent identity, legacy and redemption for salesmen Willie and Steve and owner Jerry. But business has crawled to a halt in the face of a tough economy and changing neighborhood, pushing the store to the brink of closure. Set amidst racks of pin-striped suits and feathered hats-- the clothing of a bygone era-- the men struggle to redefine themselves as the place with which they have long identified begins to vanish.

The Atlantic Cities: The Stigma of Riding the Bus

IMG_3357 I found this article, the full title of which is "Race, Class, and the Stigma of Riding the Bus in America," pretty interesting. In part, it discusses the impact of demographic shifts, and economic changes, on who is riding the bus, and how people view the bus.

Kidical Mass coming to Joe Cole Spray Park

Joe Cole Splash Park. Photo by Robert Mann-Thompson.

Our friends at Kidical Mass DC host an nearly monthly family-fun bike ride. This month, they're headed to Joe Cole Recreation Center's splash park, and we couldn't be more excited!

We'd also love your help getting the park tidy before they arrive. Please join us at the park at 9:00 am for a quick clean-up. That will give folks time to join the ride at Turkey Thicket (or at another stop as the ride moves east), and a chance to tidy up before it gets too hot out.

From Kidical Mass DC:

Next ride: Saturday, July 21 SPLASHDOWN!

Cool off with us in the splash park at the newly-renovated Joe Cole Recreation Center. Once again, we'll start out at Turkey Thicket Recreation Center in Brookland and coast downhill along the Met Branch Trail. After a quick swing through Near Northeast, we'll bike up to the Rec Center for some noisy, wet fun in their new splash park. Afterward, anyone who's hungry can join us for lunch at The Argonaut, one of H Street's most kid-friendly dining establishments. We'll have three meetups plus one optional meetup (depending on local interest): one at Turkey Thicket in Brookland, one at Met Branch Trail and R Street NE, and one at the southern terminus of the Met Branch Trail. If anyone from Capitol Hill or Near Northeast would like an additional meetup in their neighborhood, we can also make a slight detour to pick up more friends at the front of J.O. Wilson Elementary School at 6th Street NE and K Street NE. Be sure to bring swim diapers, sunblock, and anything else your family will need for extended outdoor splashtime.

Date: Saturday, July 21, 2012

Destination: Joe Cole Recreation Center and Splash Park, plus optional lunch at The Argonaut

Meetup Times:
  • Turkey Thicket (east side parking lot, near the basketball courts): 10:30am
  • Met Branch Trail @ R Street NE: 11:00am
  • Met Branch Trail @ M Street NE: 11:15am
  • [optional] J.O. Wilson, 6th & K NE: 11:25am
Distance: 3.8 miles (plus an optional half-mile extension to the Argonaut for lunch)

Difficulty: Easy-Intermediate. Mainly downhill and on a bike trail. A few short stretches on medium-busy roads.

Route: click here for map

On Vacation

Tropico
As I leave for vacation you may have already noticed the first posts from my friends who offered to fill in while I'm away. The volunteers are Jaime, Jen, and Thom. I will leave it up to them whether they wish to introduce themselves further. At any rate, be nice to them. They are preventing Frozen Tropics from stagnating for a whole week. I'm going to (through the magic of pre-programming) throw up a photo each weekday, which might be a good place to share suggested links.

H STREET MAIN STREET RELEASES RETAIL SURVEY; CALLS FOR RESIDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN RETAIL FOCUS GROUPS

H Street Main Street (HSMS) recently released a survey aimed at gathering information on area residents' and patrons' spending habits. This information will be used to help attract retail development to the corridor by providing meaningful data showing what consumers desire and what they will support, in addition to highlighting any areas of spending leakage. You can find the survey here.

"We are thrilled to launch this survey, which is the first initiative in a broad array of programs we're producing aimed at targeting and recruiting retail to H Street, NE," says Anwar Saleem, HSMS Executive Director. "This comunity-based approach to economic development can serve as a model for how the District and how it approaches neighborhood redevelopment and retail recruitment and retention."

More on Last Night's Fire at Webb Elementary

Fire 1
Reader Diane J. writes in with these photos and a report (echoing reports from other residents) of a neighbor seeing someone inside the building shortly before the fire. Some neighbors have suggested that squatters may have been living in the vacant school (it was being used as storage space). Here's a link to my earlier post on the topic, and here are two (non-satirical) posts from Titan of Trinidad.

The school has sat empty (other than the office furniture stored there) for the past few years. It was supposed to be surplused, and offered to private developers, but then the city decided to maybe keep it for an unspecified future government use. Then they didn't identify any such use, and it was to go back on the surplus property list. You can read more about the problematic history of that mess on the Trinidad Neighborhood Association's blog.

McDuffie Asks Mayor to Move the Car Barn

Ward 5 Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie has written a letter asking the Mayor to consider relocating the proposed trolley car barn that is to be constructed adjacent to Spingarn HS. McDuffie's letter is a response to the concern of some Ward 5 residents that the location is inappropriate, and potentially unsafe. There were also issues raised regarding DDOT's failure to engage the community before selecting the site. You can read the complete text after the jump.

Inside That New Game Bar

DSC_0012
I thought people would enjoy this sneak peak at the as yet unnamed bar replacing Fruit Bat at 1236 H Street. This new spot looks completely different than Fruit Bat. First, there's more space, as they they removed the kitchen. They have several stand up arcade games (the one I played was 50 cents a game), a crane game, fooseball, darts, and a pool table is on the way. They also have a couple of screens set up at the bar so you can play old Nintendo, Atari, or Sega, games.

They have two beers on tap, and several others in cans and bottles (complete list below). Beer prices range from $3.50-$7, with most costing $6. Food offerings are limited to Pop Tarts, and "assorted cereals." They may slightly expand the food offerings in the future (grilled cheese?), but it's always going to be limited as they have no kitchen.

Name That Bar, a Contest

IMG_4978
As we learned Monday, a new 80's arcade themed beer bar will replace Fruit Bat. The original plan was to call it Barcade. It turns out that there is a string of bars in and around New York that operate under that name. And, as a representative of the soon to open H Street bar told me "[t]here are at least a handful of other similar names that include bar and arcade and...of course [we] can't [use] any of those either." The owner and his team noticed that readers here were throwing out names on the Frozen Tropics, decided to offer people in the neighborhood the opportunity to name the new bar. The winning name will be chosen from the comment section of this post Monday before the bar opens to the public (for this reason, you should leave some form of contact info in your comment). Here's how it works:

The rules are simple:
The name should have feel that is 80's, beer, and arcade.
By submitting a name, each participant is agreeing to sell it to us for $150 in quarters if it is selected. There can be no other bar by this name anywhere in the United States. We will verify this.

You will, of course, also get bragging rights. Game on.

They've picked a winner:

Dear Frozen Tropics Readers, Friends, Neighbors, and Drinkers,

We cannot express our thanks enough for all of your enthusiasm in our new venture and all of the awesome comments and bar names you’ve given us. This has been so much fun! We have chosen the name Atlas Arcade, for its timelessness and its sense of place. So the winner is Don S, who unfortunately didn’t leave any contact info. There were so many great names and we were so entertained that we also chose some honorable mentions who will each get two free drinks on their first visit to Atlas Arcade:

Raygun Era (by Inked)
Drunky Kong (by Farcus)
Princess Barstool (by J.G.)
Atlas Chugged (by Negroni)

Additionally, Erik would like to buy a beer for the anonymous reader who took a creative cheap shot and posted “For Lease”. Among the team we also liked “Do Your Homework, Erik” so obviously a great deal of humor has been employed in this endeavor.

Again, thank you so much all for submitting your names and really having fun with it! As a token of our thanks, we would like to invite all those who posted with their contact info to a private neighborhood appreciation power hour this Sunday afternoon, July 15 from 12-4. Free Pop Tarts for all! (and maybe some other fun stuff)

We open to the public Tuesday, July 10, at 6 PM. We hope to see you all soon!

Game On.

Sincerely,
The Atlas Arcade Team

Missing Kittens Firefox & Chrome

2012-06-18 15.18.53
From a reader:

My 2 "porch" kittens are missing today. I am worried they wandered off, got lost or stuck somewhere, or worse. I haven't seen them since the night before last night. They are like alley cats, but live under my porch at 1225 Morse St NE. They are skittish around people, but probably hungry and may approach you. Kittens are 4 months old, one solid grey (Chrome), the other dark orange tabby (Firefox). They are also both ear-tipped, with the top of their left ear trimmed off (universal mark of a neutered alley cat). If you have seen them since Wednesday morning or know where they are, please let me know. Email (istandakimbo[at]gmail.com), call or text, 202 706 3412.

H Street, The Sitcom

Remember a while back when we discussed a casting call for a sitcom about H Street? Well, they've wrapped up shooting and submitted the finished product to some festivals. Hopefully we'll be able to see the full thing soon, but here's a short trailer for now. One note, it's apparently a sitcom within a sitcom, but I get the feeling that idea probably is more clear in the full length version. Read more about it here.

Tell Your Story: What Living/Working Here Means To Me

Tropico

Hey guys, I have to be offline for nearly a week later this month (family thing), and I don't want to leave Frozen Tropics dormant that long. I thought this might be a cool opportunity to give you readers a chance to talk back in a way you don't normally do in the comments.

Here's the deal: email me (elise.bernard[at]gmail.com) something telling me about your experiences living in the neighborhood (or working here). Tell me why the area is special to you. No profanity, keep it friendly, no specific length limits. It would be great to have a photo (or more than one), but the photo does not need to be of you. I will choose several submissions and set them up to autopost while I am away. I will not post your name unless you say it is ok, but please give me your full name in the email. I'm played with the idea of doing something like this before, and if it goes well it could become a regular feature on Frozen Tropics. Here are some things that might be good to include in your potential post:
1. How long you have lived/worked around here;
2. What brought you to the neighborhood;
3. What you like/dislike about the area.

It could also be simply a story about an experience living/working here. Each of us has our own unique experience here, and I'm sure you have some interesting views/stories to share.

I should mention that someone will be checking in on the comments while I am away (so no funny stuff).
