WP: Country Club in Spring?

The Post contains a short update on what's new and suggests that the H Street Country Club, which will open in the vacant space previously occupied by Phish Tea, will be open this spring. The Country Club is a tongue in cheek venture from Joe Englert and co. that will serve burgers and other American fare amidst a nineteen hole DC themed mini-golf course. Sorry about the barely literate version of this that was up earlier today, I got distracted miscomposition & didn't post the corrected version.

WP: What's Brewing on H?

The Post lavishes more attention on Dr. Granville's(1338 H Street), and also pays a visit to the Pug(1334 H Street). It sounds like the Pug is now serving up hot dogs though plans to serve paninis are still in the works.

Naby's Island to Open September 15th

This Thursday, August 30th, the charity organization "Bartending for Change," (aka Salim Bhabhrawala and Marty Claessens) will host FOOD FOR ALL as its honored Non-Profit Charity of the month. The Happy Hour will intoxicate from 6:30 to 10 pm at one of the new and exciting H St, NE bars, The Argonaut. There is a mere $3 optional cover charge at the door, which will be donated directly to FOOD FOR ALL. Inside and upstairs there'll be great drink specials and all tips earned will go to FOOD FOR ALL as well! Please come support us and spend an "entertaining" evening with good friends. FOOD FOR ALL is a non-profit organization that strives to provide food for those in DC who are in temporary situations of need. Their clients are generally elderly citizens, handicapped or single mothers with young children. Naby's Island Restaurant

A Caribbean restaurant is taking over the space formerly occupied by the Rib Tip (12th & H). A sign above the door says they are aiming for a September opening. Other Caribbean food on H Street: Taste of Jamaica (operated exclusively as a carryout at first, but now has tables at 6th & H), Tropicana (a carryout coming soon to the 1000 block of H), Caribbean Best (a carryout in the 1300 block of H with the same owners as Rose's Dream).

A Message From Sticky Rice

This Saturday night August 18th from 9pm - 11pm we will be having a FREE Sticky Rice tasting at the Rock and Roll Hotel (1353 H Street), upstairs in the Presidential Suite. Two sushi rollers will be on premises churning out signature Stick Rice rolls. We will also have tater tots (with tot sauce), Sticky Balls and garden balls as well.

Ice Cream Update

During a stroll down H Street the other evening we noticed a contractor working on 1360 H Street. He had already painted (giving us a good idea of the intended look), installed water hook-ups, and was finishing up with the electrical outlets. As previously reported, the space will be an ice cream parlor and sweet shop.

CP: Eat at Joe's

The City Paper blog City Desk has a piece on Joe Englert and his food oriented plans for H street. Not only does Sticky Rice get a mention, along with upcoming grub from the Rock & Roll Hotel (middle eastern inspired fare with an emphasis on the vegan and vegetarian), the H Street Country Club (burgers, or course), Dr. Granville Moore's (unpretentious Belgian food), but the piece also mentions a spot (location not yet disclosed) that Englert hopes might house an Ethiopian restaurant.

Rib Tip Update

I received the following email this afternoon (slightly edited):

[W]e had breakfast at Rib Tip this morning. The owner told us the following:

• Starting Monday he's going to be charging DC taxes on top of his prices. Up til now he's been paying them out of the revenue he gets in order to bring customers in and let them find out how good his food is at a good price. If you ask me the prices are *still* a bargain for the delicious home-cooked food even with taxes added in.
• The added revenue should allow him to hire extra help to improve service
• All his equipment is now in and he has a training class for the equipment scheduled for tomorrow, allowing:
• Starting Monday (barring bad weather that cancels the training class tomorrow) they'll be open from 5:30 am to 8pm and serving a full menu, including racks of ribs, rotisserie chicken, etc.
• Oh, and I had the home fries w/ breakfast this morning...no, not preformed shredded potato patties...real potatoes w/ seasoning and onions...off the charts good. At least to me :-)

I don't have the menu in front of me, but I believe the new hours keep them open (closed Sundays) until 3pm during the week, and 4pm on Saturdays. The lunch menu has ribs (I believe it said "Chicago style") and rib sandwiches. Anyone tried the lunch yet? The Rib Tip is located on the corner of 12th & H Street.

Rock and Roll Hotel: Focus on live music (like a smaller 9:30 Club). The first floor is a straight-up performance space where you can get right up against the band (the stage is truly thisclose to the audience). The upstairs is more loungy and attention was obviously given to decorating the space. There are lots of little rooms where you can sit and drink with friends, or the rooms can be rented out for private parties. Now serving food. The menu offers an assortment of light fare. Plenty of vegan options here. Thursday is Drunken Jenga night, and you can stack -em up and knock 'em down from 8pm-2am. They also host a drunken spelling bee.

The Star and Shamrock: a Jewish deli inside an Irish pub. Live Irish music Thursdays and Saturdays.

H Street Country Club: 9 putt-putt holes with a Washington/historical/political theme. A pool hall serving serving Tex-Mex with a kick downstairs and Mexican food upstairs. Chef Teddy Folkman from Granville's created the menu [with consultation by Ann Cashion].

Dangerously Delicious Pies:

Originally hailing from Baltimore, this pie shop serves up a variety of sweet and savory offerings, including quiche. They are working on a liquor license.
