DC Meets Washington Free Summer Educuation Program

DC Meets Washington is a FREE summer opportunity for rising 6th, 7th, and 8th graders which will take place at Browne Education Campus. Bardo Beer Made Time Out's List of 22 Best Beer Gardens in America

Time Out tapped Trinidad's own Bardo Brew Pub (1200 Bladensburg Road) for their list of the 22 Best Beer Gardens in America. Bardo opens at 6pm on weekdays and at 1pm on weekends. They have 100 seats indoors, and 500 seats outdoors. There is plenty of cornhole and picnic tables for all. They are also dog friendly 100% of the time.

Join the Anacostia Watershed Society for Watershed Wednesday at Bardo (1200 Bladensburg Road) from 6-8pm tomorrow. The topic is birding, and they have two featured speakers:

Dan Rauch, a Wildlife Biologist for the District Department of the Environment, is the region's go-to professional on the newly nesting Bald Eagles in the National Arboretum. Dan has the inside scoop on the eagles, eaglets, and deep knowledge of how birds are closely tied into a healthy Anacostia ecosytem.

The next PSA 507 meeting is tomorrow (6/16) at the Rosedale Rec (500 19th St) from 7-8pm. PSA 507 covers the Carver-Langston, Rosedale, and Kingman Park neighborhoods.

Little Miss Whiskey's Hosts a Krampus in July Tiki Party

I never really contemplated the possibility of such an event, but it's happening. There's a Krampus tiki party, and it will be held at Little Miss Whiskey's Golden Dollar (1104 H Street) July 16th. Krampus is no stranger to H Street. Each December you can see him roaming the corridor, but I believe this his first summer appearance. I guess we now know what he does in the off season.

The Pursuit Celebrates One Year on H Street NE

The Pursuit Wine Bar (1421 H Street) is turning one and they have a whole week of celebration planned. If you haven't stopped by recently, this is a great week to do it. Full press release follows.

A reader wrote in with news that the new Thai restaurant is open and serving food. According to local blog District Cuisine the restaurant will serve a limited menu for the next several weeks before holding their grand opening. Please note that they do not currently have a liquor license, but according to District Cuisine they plan to apply for one soon. They are currently serving dinner only, but look for lunch service in the future.

800 Block of 5th Street Hosts a Multi-Family Yard Sale

Free Children's Vacation Bible School at Calvary Episcopal Church

Calvary Episcopal Church (820 6th Street) sends word that they are offering a free one week children's Vacation Bible School that starts July 6th. Details below:

Calvary Episcopal Church is excited to offer Vacation Bible School this Summer for one week beginning Monday, July 6th, 6:00 to 8:00 with dinner served at 6:00 and instruction beginning at 6:30. Companion classes will be offered for parents and grandparents at the same time. The school is open to rising 1st graders through rising 7th graders. Our theme is "Teach Me How to Pray." ANC 5D Meeting 6/9

The announcement went out just before midnight last night for the next ANC5D meeting. As usual, there is no agenda. There is a promise to update the agenda and send out a copy prior to the meeting. It's my understanding that neither the general public, nor the other Commissioners have necessarily always been granted access to see an agenda prior to arrival at these meetings. Vigil Tomorrow for Slain Reporter Charnice Milton

There's a vigil tomorrow night for the Capital Community News reporter Charnice Milton who was fatally shot on the way home from covering an assignment in Ward 6 last Wednesday. MPD said she was not in the intended target. The 27 year old journalist was a regular contributor to both the Hill Rag and East of the River.

As part of SAVOR week (an American craft beer and food experience) Dr. Granville Moore's (1238 H Street) is teaming up with Flying Dog for a little something they're calling Eat All the Mussels! $36.30 gets you all you can eat mussels, and bread to soak up their juices. Tip and beverages are not included, but that price does cover tax on the food. They'll be pouring several Flying Dog beers that night, including two new releases, for $5-7 a glass. H Street CVS Pharmacy Robbed

The new CVS at 645 Street was robbed yesterday. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

From a local MPD listserv:

On today's date at around 2:26PM, (2) subjects entered the CVS store located at 645 H Street, Northeast, proceeded to the pharmacy counter where they jumped the counter, held down an employee, and stole medication from the shelf.  Both subjects then exited the store, and fled southbound in the 700 block of 7th Street, Northeast.

There were no injuries associated with this offense.

This case is currently being investigated by the First District Investigative Unit.

Lost Bird: Ailah

Just received the following email about a lost bird.  Please be on the look out!

"Our pet bird, Ailah, flew away this morning. Would you be able to post her photo in case any neighbors have seen her? She will fly to a shoulder and will sit on your finger,  she loves orange juice,  sunflower seeds,  spinach, and yogurt. (Any food,  actually.) She doesn't speak but will respond to kissy noises. She will most likely fly to a window or porch rail when she gets hungry and tired.

Her main coloring is a vivid green, with a dark red tail and grey neck.  She also has a band on one ankle.

Burglar Caught on Tape, Comes Back for Seconds

A local couple caught a burglar on tape as he entered their house and looked for items to steal. The door had inadvertently been left unlocked by houseguests. It happened May 15th, at about 2:30pm on a Friday afternoon. What appears to be the same man returns ten days later knocks on the door and behaves suspiciously (takes a few steps, but keeps looking back at the door) after hearing a dog barking.

Joe Englert to Open Beer Garden/Coffee Roastery w/ Bouldering on Mt. Olivet

The Washington Business Journal reports details on Joe Englert's latest venture that combines beer, coffee, and bouldering...and is next to Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The property is at 1240 Mt. Olivet Road and is the former home of Strauss Photo Technical Service. This is on the Ivy City side of Mt. Olivet Road (pretty much across the street from Kovak's). A beer garden at this location is sure to draw the attention of ANC 5D Commissioners, but please note that it is actually located in ANC 5C04 (Jackie Manning's SMD). Proximity alone will almost certainly mean we'll soon see Joe Englert (or someone else from the venture) presenting in front of ANC 5D.

It's Ginkgo Spraying Time

DDOT started in yesterday on this year's spraying o' the female ginkgo trees. The spraying, which prevents the formation of the ginkgo's stinky fruit, should wrap up on the 10th. DDOT uses the same spray it has used for 20 years, Shield-3EC 24(C).

W.S. Jenks & Son Adds Sunday & Evening Hours

Local hardware store W.S. Jenks & Son (910 Bladensburg Road) has all sorts of things you might need for the house and garden, but up until now it's been a tad tricky to get over there during open hours. To better accommodate customers Jenks is adding some much requested Sunday hours and staying open a little later on weeknights.

Someone Threw a Brick Through an X2 Bus Window [UPDATED]

Twitter user @JadeMStone sends word that someone threw a brick and shattered a window on an X2 while the westbound bus was stopped at 19th and Benning. She reports that there were few on the bus at the time (only maybe seven). No one was injured, but the passengers (who then boarded the bus she was riding) told her there was glass everywhere. The X2 is among the busiest bus routes in the District.
