Kids Day at the Farmers Market Tomorrow

There's lots of fun for kids who make it out to the farmers market at 13th and H Street tomorrow.
They've got build-a-bug wherein children create bugs from market produce. Kazoo the balloon twister will be onsite twisting away for the last time before he moves away from DC, they will have free apple cider; and possibly some fun funky tattoos.

What Happened in the 1100 Blk of Trinidad Ave?

IMG_5386
The market on the corner on of Trinidad and Florida. I haven't checked recently to see if they are still selling pocket sized digital scales.

That was the question I received on Twitter yesterday from Capitol Romance. Apparently there was a mass of MPD officers and cars in the the 1100 block of Trinidad Avenue. Although I hadn't seen any previous reports, my initial guess was that MPD had conducted some sort of drug bust. This thought resulted primarily from the recent online discussions of blatant outdoor drug dealing (often handing drugs through car windows) at this location.

From the flyer:

On Friday June 29th 2012, King Tut, a 6-month old brindle and white puppy, had a large block of cement dropped on his head while he was sleeping. NBC 4: Alleged Anti-Gay Bias Attack Saturday

View more videos at: http://nbcwashington.com.

NBC 4 interviews a man who says he was attacked after attending the H Street Festival with friends. The man was walking down H Street with a friend when a group of men followed them, and one punched him in the face. The group then laughed, and used anti-gay slurs. The victim did not file a police report Saturday, and says he now regrets not doing so. Officers from MPD did respond to the scene.

+++++++++++
UPDATE
+++++++++++

I received a phone call from a credible source who says he saw what happened. My source claims that the alleged victim was not attacked, but rather tripped and fell. My source says the guy appeared intoxicated. According to my source, after the man fell, someone offered him a towel to clean up, and he stumbled off into an alley. An MPD officer followed the man into the alley.

Did you witness this event? It occurred at 10th and H Street. If you saw something, please email me directly at elise.bernard[at]gmail.com.

It looks like my source witnessed a separate incident in which a man fell. The attack mentioned above allegedly occurred at 6th and H. I apologize the confusion.

Addressing Issues at Joe Cole Park

DSC_0027
Joe Cole Park opened about a year. It's a nice green space, with a terrific spray park. Unfortunately some people have been abusing the park recently, and it's interfering with other's enjoyment of the area. What follows is a letter that went out on multiple local lists, and was forwarded to me by the author. It raises
several concerns, and requests prompt action from MPD, and assistance from Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie. Just remember to call the police if you see any of the behaviors mentioned below (ok, not minor littering). If you are hesitant to call (e.g. you don't want to leave the park, and don't want rowdy teens to hear you call) you can always text MPD anonymously at 50411.

Dear Chief Groomes, et. al

I am writing to request police  action to curb the chronic problems that are creating a negative environment for the many children, families, and other neighbors who use the playgrounds, recreation, and school grounds at Wheatley Elementary and Joe Cole Recreation Center at the 1200 block of Neal and Morse streets.

Grace Park of Park's Hardware Hospitalized

IMG_3364
A reader writes in with the following note:

I spoke with someone who works at Park Hardware and apparently Mrs. Park was hit by a car recently and is in the hospital. The details were kind of hazy but from what I could gather, she walks every morning near Maryland Ave and was hit by a car turning off of Maryland Ave. She's is supposedly going to be in the hospital for a month. I don't believe they are looking for anything but I'm sure they could use the uptick in business.

Anyone who has shopped at Park's Hardware (920 H Street) knows Grace Park, who is almost always at the store. You might want to stop by Park's if you need some hardware or cleaning item in the near future. They also make keys, and have some garden stuff in the back room.

Jair Lynch Purchases 501 H Street

The plot thickens as Jair Lynch, who already owns the south side of the 600 block of H Street, has now acquired 501 H Street. As noted in the tweet below, 501 H Street is the headquarters of the H Street Community Development Corporation ("H Street CDC").

Back in March Housing Complex discussed possible plans by the H Street CDC to expand its squat one story headquarters to a much grander five story 29,440 sqft structure with affordable housing (rendering accompanies the article).

WP: DC Orders Dirty Asian Punch Off Pug Menu

Mike DeBonis has the scoop behind the forced removal of Marion Barry's Dirty Asian Summer Punch from the menu at the Pug (1234 H Street). Owner Tony Tomelden, whose father was half Filipino, added the punch to the menu after Marion Barry made some pretty offensive comments (video here) this past Spring about Asian business owners and their "dirty shops," Shortly after that Barry complained there were too many Filipino nurses in DC. Though some Pug customers were offended by the punch, the point of the of the drink was pretty clearly to skewer Marion Barry's racist statements, rather than to propagate racial stereotypes.

The DC government, however, was not amused and informed Tomelden that he was violating DC's Human Rights Act. That could have subjected him to a fine of up to $10,000. So while the punch is gone, the Pug remains.

Fresh Farm Market Moves During Festival

Due to H Street Festival the market is moving next weekend to the grassy parking lot behind the R.L. Christian Library. I polled all the farmers last week and we looked at the space together and they want to hold the market there (rather than canceling it for the day).

The hours will be the same, 9am to noon and every single farmer will be in attendance. Can you please help me spread the word far and wide, so that the market is well attended?

Thanks so much for your help! Write with any questions, suggestions, etc.

Photos of Union Market & The Florida Market

I took a few photos of this weekend opening of Union Market this weekend, and I've now added those shots to my large wholesale food district Flickr set that I've been building for the last several years. It's 683 photos (I'm sure some of those are black and white conversions). It's really interesting to look at the photos of the Union Market building today, versus what it looked like about five years ago when it was the DC Farmers Market building. Take a look at the differences below.

Crafty Bastards Heads to Union Market

DSC_0156
This just in, the Washington City Paper has announced that it is moving its Crafty Bastards craft fair to the soon to open Union Market this fall. The event has previously been held in Adams Morgan, but organizers recently made it clear that they needed a new space (preferably an indoor one).

The downside, is that the event will now require a $10 ticket. The upside is that nobody has to worry about getting rained on. That, and they will also offer $25 VIP tickets for those who want to scope out the vendors' wares ahead of everyone else. The event will feature 100 vendors, and will take place Saturday November 10th, from 10am-7pm.

Union Market Opening & DC Scoop

DSC_0053
Guests previewing the Union Market space during June's Sunday Supper

Union Market (Eden's new development inside the former DC Farmers Market at 1309 5th Street) opens Saturday. It's a vast departure from the old Farmers Market, which skewed down market. The new development is much more upscale (more similar to Eastern Market), and features artisanal cheeses, a bakery, an oyster bar, a coffee shop, and much more. It's going to be interesting to see what sort of impact this has on the remainder of the Florida Market.

To celebrate the opening, Eden's is holding the second annual DC Scoop. DC Scoop is a competition during which you can walk around and try all sorts of frozen treats.

Read the press release below for full details.
